Well, I updated my pledge to $30 so that I can get MY FUCKING PORTRAITS. But I'm definitely irked that I was forced to compromise my principles in this way. I wouldn't have done so for a lesser game.

Portraits in computer roleplaying games are kind of a big deal, since the available portraits limit the kind of characters you can create. There usually aren't enough good portraits to create the ideal party. Most classic CRPGs with portraits would have been a lot less playable if 5-10 of the best portraits were removed, because there simply wouldn't have been enough good portraits left to make a party.

Imagine a world in which you were forced to use this anime elf bitch portrait in your party for all infinity engine games, as all the better portraits had been cut out to be re-sold as DLC.

I can't imagine a worse hell.

P.S. In Icewind Dale 2, the good portraits were actually better than the game itself. It's been close for a few other games.

I think the BG1 portraits were paintovers of the Bioware devs' friends/family, hence why they were so weird looking.

Someone posted some of the stock photos they came from in the LOL Bioware thread a while back.

My favorite one, the blonde in blue dress, someone found the stock art it came from.

Well, I'm open to being proved wrong, but I really doubt it's all of the IWD/IWD2 portraits.

I could see some of the IWD1 portraits being a bit dodgy, although I don't know how you'd find a stock photos for these guys:

With IWD2's better portraits, I'd be really surprised (and saddened) if many of them were stock photos, since they really, really look like paintings.

Take the IWD2 portraits by Justin Sweet for example; I've browsed his entire 300+ image online gallery ( http://www.justinsweet.com/GALLERY/ ) and he maintains a very consistent style; his portraits for IWD2 look incredibly similar to his other paintings, with the exception that the IWD2 portraits just show one person posing for the camera instead of an action scene.

Seems implausible.

If you can find the post I'd be very interested to see it though, it would help make me more cynical about gaming if it were true and I need to become more cynical.

One of the boys, I believe is Brian's son. I think one is his daughter too. Could be totally off here though.
