Final fantasy XIV any good?

Thoughts on the 6.4 MSQ as I played through it:

I would like to see the game stand by the ideology it touts. Have one of the main characters refuse to do something wrong and die for it.

*sigh* we are relying on Sharlayan scholars to magick up the solution. Again! We could have tried finding a clan of Garlean reapers, who would've known how to open portals to the Void so Voidsent could come through to be bound. But no, that's too cool for FFXIV.

Wait, the Tower of Babil - aka the Imperial Palace, aka the tower cobbled together out of the broken civilization of Garlemald - hasn't been dismantled and buried? Talk about using the seat of power and the graveyard of a civilization to suit our own ends.

Why not just say "Zenos' and Fandaniel's spies"? The Telephoroi turned out not to be an organization as implied in 5.4, but just two dudes.

They're trying to downplay it but Garlemald is effectively being occupied by the Eorzean Alliance. That is interesting. Why don't they show us this occupation?

If Hydaelyn could power a starship, then why did she run out of strength after shielding the WoL from the Ultima Weapon in ARR 2.0? Why was she so weak that she had to had to bodyjack Minfillia just to talk, rather than projecting her spirit like she did at Mor Dhona in 5.5 or on the boat to Sharlayan in 6.0?

You're not my dear friend at all.

That's what happens when the writers closed up every trouble in the setting over the past two years. Different pirate factions and some of them are hostile? Gone, they all obey Merlwyb now. Beast tribes that kidnap and sacrifice people? They are ALL best buddies with the city states now. Garlemald? All of their legions are wiped out or surrender offscreen. Only thing left is to pull new hostile forces from out of thin air and have them invade.

You'd think that the visit of the sovereign of one of the wealthiest countries in the world to Sharlayan would attract attention. You know, maybe guards escorting Vytra, or politicians coming out to greet him, or people curious to get a glimpse at him.

The Isle of Haam intro cutscene is dizzying.

I'm playing on max settings, and wow look at that pop in!

My samurai's Tenka Goken AOE is now too big. I'm almost at max zoom and my AOE effects are covering most of the ground onscreen.

Too bad the actual game world isn't as picturesque as the dungeons.

Again, the Eorzea depicted in the corridor dungeons is much cooler than almost all of the zones you get to actually run around in.

When I saw the arced platform and the tentacles pop up out of the water, I got excited for a few seconds thinking that maybe it would be a multi-target encounter where you would have to split the party up to cut down multiple different tentacles, like Megaera from Throne of Thunder. Then it turned out that no, it's just a straight forward tank and spank on a single target. Missed potential.

Knock it off with the navel gazing.

... What neutrality? You fought for the Eorzean Alliance against Garlemald.

Why would the remnant of Garlemald heed the request of their great enemy, the Warrior of Light who slaughtered thousands of their people and had a hand in destroying their civilization? The hero of their occupiers? Just because I saved them from zombies isn't going to make them forget that.

Didn't Lucia and Maxima just tell us that the Garleans had proper housing now? Why are they still sleaping on the seats of passenger trains and burning fires inside containers?

I'm surprised Jullus has not been shanked yet for being a collaborator.

It's been how long, and the Garleans still haven't scrubbed the brains of their beloved general off of the wall?

Sorry. That tower is the only method of easy transportation to the moon. Your country will be a vassal province of the Eorzean Alliance forever. You will never be allowed to decide what to do with the tower.

See, I find it incredulous to believe that all of the Legions surrendered or were destroyed. Surely there must be an underground or gueriella movement that has been accumulating Garlemald's powerful weapons or research to use one day to drive out the occupiers, such as those Weapon Project mechas. Would also help if there were Garleans who were burning the documents so the Alliance doesn't know how many assets there are that could be used against them or how many more soldiers and loyalist organizations there are than those that have officially surrendered.

The Alliance controls the narrative in Eorzea, and in much of Othard. They will just take your words out of context, reframe the situation, or outright lie to make themselves look like just and reasonable guardians to their peoples.

Again, for an empire this huge, there should be several Garlean organizations helping you, just as a Jewish or Muslim disapora is tight knit and resourceful.

... They can't. They're being occupied. The Alliance wants to use the tower, which means occupying the surrounding area in which a local populace dwells. Said populace must be prevented from seizing the tower or interfering with people travelling to and fro the tower. Which means that the populace must either be controlled or eliminated.

How is it ridiculous? It's the pragmatic move. Garlemald was the most powerful state in the world, and now that it is gone, other countries will begin viewing each other as competitors. Which means they must become more powerful to dominate each other or thwart being dominated. Meanwhile, there are plenty of remnants lying around of a vast industrial empire that was on the cutting edge of research. It doesn't matter if you don't intend to be a looter. Someone else is going to loot them and reverse engineer them and begin producing their own magitek weapons, or airship fleets to move armies over mountains, or dark magics to summon powerful demons, and use them to dominate your neighbors, so everyone else has to loot them too. It's a big fish eats small fish world. The very existance of Garlemald - of a people being repeatedly driven out of prosperous lands and into infertile ones until they drew upon dark magic and created magitek weapons to push back - is a testament to that fact. How do you not know your own history? The Emperor established Prussian-style schools to educate every citizen. "Jullus" is not talking like a Garlean inhabiting the setting. He is talking like an author's mouthpiece.

Vytra buying magitek from Garlemald does not seem like a strategically sound plan. The source of Thavnair's magitek will be from a foreign country that is extremely vulnerable. Garlemald can be ravaged by other countries and the supply line to Thavnair broken. Also, Garlemald is in ruins. The factories have to be rebuilt. Seems like the better idea would be for Vytra to try to lure away Garlean engineers and scientists by offering them a nice house and a big fat paycheck in Thavnair. Get them to migrate to Thavnair and bring their technical knowledge and expertise with them. Build magitek mecha and airship factories in Thavnair. For some reason Fourchenault passed up that opportunity when he visited Garlemald, and thus only brought home a handful of takers.

Inb4 the Lord Mettius goes missing and we are sent to find him and we save him at the last second from a mech and then he changes his mind and then agrees to the deal.

(it happens) *sigh*

More speechyifying *snooze*

Goodness gracious, why is an elderly statesman asking a teenage boy with blue hair if there is any hope?

It illbecomes the people who wrote this crap.

Nobody is allowed to dislike the WoL for longer than 5 minutes. Everyone must bow to the WoL! And we will have speeches about TRUST! *spits*

Goodness gracious, if I have to hear the word "trust" spoken one more time...

And stop pulling your hat down. You've done this 30 times.

... Why is it when Zero talks about "a friend you can trust", the WoL thought back to a mass murderer who tried to kill him?

STOP PULLING YOUR HAT DOWN!

I am 3 hours into this patch storyline and it's been pretty much all standing around and talking. Only actual gameplay thus far was in the 15 minute long corridor dungeon, and two shotting a mob. I was hoping that the story would have opened up with a massive demon invasion of Thavnair or the planet and you would have ran around getting to fight a lot.

Finally, after 4 hours we are now embarking on a high fantasy adventure.

Why isn't this a zone?

Oh look, it's another "win the boss fight, lose in the cutscene" moment.

Oh look, it's a Protoss! Or a Xel'Naga.

Add Voidcaller to the list.

Like today's GW2 patch, I am playing what is supposed to be a high fantasy game, but there is very little adventuring to be had. It's mostly people standing around talking and empty platitudes. What little actual adventuring there is, it's just not enough. Need more combat. Need new zones to visit. Also, tension. Story is predictable. Look at the state of the AAA high fantasy RPG genre and weep.

I guess there is the raid story, but I have a migraine so I'll do that tomorrow.
Part two of the explanations:

"*sigh* we are relying on Sharlayan scholars to magick up the solution. Again! We could have tried finding a clan of Garlean reapers, who would've known how to open portals to the Void so Voidsent could come through to be bound. But no, that's too cool for FFXIV."

Sharlayans are the only ones at the moment that can pull actually a solution and unlike the Garleans their Technology is not based on a liquid surrogate of aether the Ceruleum but on Aether itself. Aether is the key to activating the void portal as is needed a huge quantity of it and there is nobody that is more expert than them. (They are the one that actually discovered the Lifestream itself effectively succeeding in contacting Haydalin).

"Why not just say "Zenos' and Fandaniel's spies"? The Telephoroi turned out not to be an organization as implied in 5.4, but just two dudes.
They're trying to downplay it but Garlemald is effectively being occupied by the Eorzean Alliance. That is interesting. Why don't they show us this occupation?"

No there were loyalists that chose to follow Zenos. Is also the whole reason why Garlemald totally fell. An internal civil war between two Garlean factions. Between the Zenos loyalists and those that believe Zenos to be a murderer. Was initially a ploy of the alliance to make this information be spread to sparkle instability in Garlemald. A ploy that ultimately succeeded unfortunately with unexpected results. The Zenos loyalist won also because Zenos resorted in tempering giving him a huge advantage. Then they started to demolish the city in order to build the tower that was a tool to sap aether and send the energy to the moon to break Zordiak's shackles. When the alliance arrived in Garlemald there was nothing to occupy just what once was a metropolis now in ruins and former citizens attempting to survive a harsh ice hell. Ultimately they decided instead to help the refugees. Garleans were no more a threat at that point. There is nothing to occupy is a wasteland.
Final-Fantasy-XIV-Endwalker-Screenshot-068.jpg

"That's what happens when the writers closed up every trouble in the setting over the past two years. Different pirate factions and some of them are hostile? Gone, they all obey Merlwyb now. No there are still things around like you describe the Borkja storyline is still ongoing and where you fight the legion that is still loyal to the Garlemald that won't surrender on top of that the reclaiming of Doma and the reconquering of ala Mhigo was not done of screen what happened on screen was the civil war between the two Garlean factions and as result of the smart plotting of the alliance. They are actually still occupying Dalmasca. ANd that storyline is still on going. The hostile forces were hinted at since Heavensawrd. The Void Ark was an example. Vytra is a dragon. And uses actually a puppet. You had politicians there. An officer from Ishgard of all places. Remember the nation that was at war with the dragon and managed to achieve peace with them? Overthrowing a corrupt clergy and sharing the truth? The pact Vytra did was ultimately an advantage for both the nation. As Thavnair is the capital of alchemy. Of course, Garlean machinery is not magic. But is a very precise and advanced technology. A thing that for a nation like Thavnir that has as primary resource alchemy and commerce is very well needed and at the same time Vytra would conquer trust by the Garleans that would allow him to use the tower.

"Too bad the actual game world isn't as picturesque as the dungeons."
7.0 is inbound. A total restyle of the game not only when it comes to textures but also in models and detail added to the base game maps and the open world maps. They are working on it from years.

"Again, for an empire this huge, there should be several Garlean organizations helping you, just as a Jewish or Muslim disapora is tight knit and resourceful."
Yes, it was huge. And is also why the best tribes ultimately allies with the others also why it took the alliance between Ishgard, Black Shround, Thalatan, Doma,La noscea, The beast tribes and Dalmasca to bring down the empire. And yes Garlamald is gone but there is a whole legion out there that has the tools to be a menace and is also well organized that at the moment occupy Dalmasca. Borkja storyline is not over the questline ends before traveling to Dalmasca and move the the fight there.

Problem is that the patches have less shit in them, and they keep delaying bits of it:

In ARR and HW, we would get 3 dungeons and a trial in a patch, plus ancillary content.

In this patch we got one dungeon and a trial, the raid tier, and a side story. There's a Variant Dungeon, but that's delayed to 6.41, along with Blue Mage update and more Hildibrand.

Wouldn't be so bad if they hadnt delayed half the patch.

This patch added a chain of Pandemonium trials, Golbez trial, New Dungeon, Whole lot of island sanctuary content lot of Qol things, Changes on Pvp with a map redesigned,New Gear to get, Different side quests.
It added plenty of content then Variant Dungeon, Hildebrand, Savage versions of the trials will be added in the next week. Also keep in mind they are producing a new expansion along. And they are also still working with the major graphic overhaul that will come with the 7.0 version of the game. Is a work that was done across years so the game will have a nice lift.

Probably a mixture of covid "debt" and that Yoshida and the team are simultaneously working on Final Fantasy XVI, which releases in under a month.

People do seem pretty bothered that there's no equivalent to Eureka/Bozja in Endwalker's patches. Kinda crazy they have such strong player retention despite the lack of a grindy addition like that, and mostly avoiding the negative design patterns many MMOs use to artificially maintain subscription numbers.

You don't need to defend everything ^^ it's less than many previous major patches is all that he's saying.

Still very far off. FFXVI is the real reason their output is down and slower to release.

Bancho has stated that the statistics are misleading because of how it tracks players. At most it tells you the maximum number of characters during a period. He pointed to the steam figures as a better live proxy... which are down a lot. The stats show that FFXIV is suffering from attrition.

The takeaway is that EW's growth was explosive compared to other expansions, but it is stabilizing at the same level as those other expansions, which implies poor retention of new users. The game relies on a constant churn of new players as opposed to retention of players who have beaten the story and have nothing to do.

Another issue with Lucky Bancho numbers is that they don't track if people are actually playing the game, or if they are just logging in for 5 minutes every few weeks. FFXIV has FOMO in the terms of seasonal event items such as Noctis' car, and you lose your house if you don't walk into it at least once every 45 days. Once you lose your house, it will take you a long time to get another due to the high competition of housing plots and bids only happen once a week and you can only have one bid placed at a time, so you have a 1 in 12 chance of winning a plot once per week. LB numbers have become even more unreliable during Endwalker due to the frequent number of free login campaigns.

From what I gathered there was a pretty big influx of WoW refugees, a not insignificant number of which paid to skip the story / level classes before complaining that story doesn't make any sense, that there's nothing to do (because Blizzard played into the notion that endgame raiding is the only worthwhile thing to do, leaving many with a notion that that focus is what makes an MMO), before promptly unsubscribing after wasting a bunch of money -- thankfully not everyone could be described thus).

Regardless a lot of people inevitably will show up for patches or even just expansions before going back to pretending it doesn't exist, because this game doesn't go out of its way to create a constant sense of FoMO to nearly the same degree as most other gacha and MMO-esque / 'live service' games. I'm infinitely grateful there's an interesting MMO out there whose lead developer actively encourages you to go and play other games rather than warping development around insatiable MMO gremlins for whom no amount of content will ever be enough. Not to mention that attempting to placate said group seems to have left a great absence of variety in the content of MMOs that have tried to appease said group. I say this loving such high end challenges.

What I'm not saying is that you can't be disappointed by the post-EW additions -- not at all -- but this situation is preferable to extremely contrived "encouragements" and psychologically manipulative marketing.

I really just wish this wasn't a themepark MMO.
The story is interesting enough, but it takes a long time to get going and with all the sidequests it can take ages to get to the interesting part of the story if you don't want to skip all of the side content.
And I hate hotbar combat. The programmer in me just itches to automate it all ala FFXII. Fuck WoW for popularizing it and fuck every MMO for using it trying to ape WoW's popularity.

Every time I listen to this game's fantastic soundtrack I get the urge to return, but the thought of paying a subscription and re-learning rotations and grinding usually dissuades me.

you mean the random stuff npcs give out? do them in an alt job instead. thats what they were for more or less
I've got three separate classes that I'm leveling simultaneously - all of them still over-leveled for the area that I'm in in the story.
I just can't focus on the main quest and ignore all of those side-quests for later - my autism can't stand all of those exclamation points on the map.
It took all of my willpower to skip Eureka and just move on to Shadowbringers.

those areas will still exist once you're 'past' them. i don't mean literally. just stop seeing this as a level by level struggle and treat side quests as paralogues. one day the warrior of light was picking some wild garlic and helped locals with their dinossaur problem. presto.

Almost all of the sidequests in this game are bad (talking about regular sidequests, not sidequestlines like the Post Moogles or the Ishgard Church stuff), not even on the same level of interest as your average WoW sidequest. If you want a story worth your time, don't do them. If you're going through the game for the first time, doing a few questing hubs along the way through the MSQ might help build atmosphere, but if you've already passed thus hubs then don't bother going back. They are as follows:
  • Whitebrim Front in Central Coerthas Highlands.
  • The Convictory in the Western Coerthas Highlands.
  • Some of the Confederacy Quests in the Ruby Sea.
  • Some quests in Garlemald were good but they are mixed among a lot of filler.
  • Almost all of the sidequests in Elpis were somewhat interesting.
As for levelling alt classes, sidequests are among the least efficient ways to level. Just spam dungeon finder, or if you are levelling a Blue Mage, do FATEs.

Please stop shilling world of wokecraft in this thread thanks. There are a lot of sidequests. Some are interesting some are not. But the sheer number of them is kinda overwhelming. Most sidequest are for world building and are what they are. Problems of commoners. Alexander,Eden,Borkja and Eureka are also considered side content.

There are some other subtle questlines (subtle as in not obviously questlines) that are pretty good. Usually they start as an aether current unlock and build into something more significant, before an eventual capstone that ties up the story with another such questline.

If you were only going to do a handful beyond the aforementioned moogle postal and scholasticate quests (and Hildebrand! of course), I'd recommend those. But as a general rule the quality of sidequests increases exponentially as you get further through the expansions: ShB's are a far cry from the borefest of 2.0's sidequests.

It seems that none of the feedback on the official English forums is reaching the devs. The fans have been begging for Highlander eyebrows for many, many years, and then in a livestream Yoshi-P was caught offguard by a question about Highlander eyebrows, as if he didn't know how about how much it was demanded.
