Unironically Jack "Kill Chaos" Garland was better, honestly he was one of the most entertaining protags in FF.
Jack Garland is awesome him and Clive are definitely the better new FF protagonists in years especially after the bitch that wad Noctis

I can't do it anymore. This game has broken me.

I played FF16 for 35-40 hours, roughly about the halfway point. Then FF7 Rebirth came out and I played that like an addict, multiple hours a day, enjoyed the fuck out of it (though it's definitely not perfect), and finished it with 95 hours on the clock. Still thinking about how much fun I had with its combat and party system, still fresh on my mind.

So then I decide to go back to FF16 and resume my playthrough... and it's just so fucking boring. The story is so boring and predictable, the characters put me to sleep, but the worst (and most important) part is that the combat is so unbelievably repetitive, so unbelievably monotone. It's so, so boring.

My thumb literally gets tired from mashing the attack button so much, and I don't know if I can mentally take performing the same combos for 30 more hours (I got the DLC too...). I just don't think I have it in me. It's broken me. It's too repetitive.

It's actually a fascinating case study, I think. It's a well-made game but at the same time a complete snoozefest. It's not even about it being "too easy", it's just that every single gameplay system in the game seems to have been expertly designed to make you NOT THINK and to put you to sleep.

While it's true that gameplay in FF16 is absolutely fucking garbage (who paid for this..), narratively this is the best Final Fantasy since X. It's not like the bar is high, sure, but the fact is that decently written, mature stories are VERY rare in JRPGs. I'm never going back to this game but I appreciate it for what it is, cool story with epic moments. That's more than I could say about every mainline FF since XII.

I think the attitude of Clive really carries 16, the moment when he’s hunting Kuptka. There is never a moment that makes me roll my eyes or a moment of “You are a monster Clive killing me makes you just as bad” nah broski Clive is chopping your hands off and making fun of your little blonde bitch.

Then the actual titan lost fight when you see Ifrit an already big eikon get utterly dwarfed by titan. He looks at titan in awe, slams the ground and says “ITS DO OR DIE!” and starts to run just to finish Kuptka himself.

Alright, finally done with this thing.

I'm done making excuses for this game. Final Fantasy 16 is the worst Final Fantasy game in the series, worse than 13.

What a waste of time.

Remember when they said 15th century Bohemia should have blacks because some Africans would have come through at some point and raped everyone?
This comment didn't age well....

I've picked this up since Denuvo was removed last week. Heads up to anyone else doing the same, I was getting constant repeatable crashes trying to fast travel after the first visit to the hideaway (couldn't progress). Completely resolved it by rolling back to the 561.09 nvidia driver.

Enjoying the game, I have been playing a ton of difficult and narrative light souls games, souls-likes and metroidvanias in the past few years, so probably ready for an easier more narrative/cutscene heavy game to mix things up. Really like that the main character and the story in general seem very sincere so far, a hard thing to do in a historically zany franchise with chocobos and the like. Probably a good case study for the Sincerity in RPGs thread.

I have installed a handful of mods to improve the vanilla experience, mods I'd recommend are:

FFXVI Fix https://www.nexusmods.com/finalfantasy16/mods/6 60 FPS cutscenes and other tweaks. I only use the camera setting section of the .ini to centre the camera

Clean HUD: https://www.nexusmods.com/finalfantasy16/mods/135 Removes damage numbers and most of the clutter from the HUD in combat and exploration. Removes the quest marker constantly on screen during exploration. Probably wouldn't play without this.

Basic Difficulty: https://www.nexusmods.com/finalfantasy16/mods/13 Increases the damage dealt to the MC and allows multiple enemies to attack at once. Didn't use the extra enemy HP option, no interest in fighting HP sponges. Interestingly there is a modifier on the FFXVI Fix mod that allows you to up the damage dealt to Clive, will probably test that to see if they work in tandem, might be a way to make the game properly challenging (if I feel the need).

I think FFXVI is a good game, correct in all fronts. The problem it has is it doesn´t excel at anything. If you want DMC combat you have better options, and the same with RPG mechanics, exploration, etc. But it´s not bad at anything, the story and characters are not offensive, it´s beautiful and the presentation is great.

I think is a comfy game to to relax. Probably too long.

There is no universe where FFXVI combat wouldn't be considered awful. Perhaps it can be improved by mods but the base experience is horrible.

Nah
Played the game's demo back in April and was shocked with how fun the combat was - played through the Eikonic Challenge 2 times back-to-back

Now I'm just waiting for the Complete Edition price to drop to 30€
But this might be the first Final Fantasy game I'll play to completion since high school...

If all you want from combat is hitting the enemy with a bunch of flashy moves with a single button press until it dies, I recommend playing DMC5 instead.
