Didn't Kraftwerk also compose their songs with an Atari ST?But they were so expensive - the virtue of the Atari ST had been its cheapness, which had allowed relatively poor musicians to make top quality music at the time (in combo with the sampler) and prep it for the studio.
The midi port was quite a unique feature indeed for this computer. Some people also used it for building LANs - at at time where Ethernet was not really available yet for the general public.
There was even a game called Midi-Maze which used the midi port to support several players on different computers playing together:
