what about gold box games? Pool of radiance. I think they're quite accessible, and combat is fun.

Wow, Skyway is that young?

I mean, I'm 23, but my first RPG was Fallout.

You damn kids, get the fuck off my lawn! I was 23 when Fallout 2 came out. I think you little shits should start addressing me as Sir from now on.

Pfft... I was 38 when Fallout 2 came out, you can call me Master (or Pops whatever takes your fancy). And don't scare the kiddies away, they're the reson I hang around here, sweet young things that they are

OT: I vote for Gothic 1 next, like Fallout 1 it's shorter and not quite as hard as NoTR.... he'll probably like it so much he'll want to play NoTR right after anyway....

Torment. Holy trinity first. Except perhaps BG2 substituted for Arcanum, I can imagine the combat being off putting.

PST will bore him to tears. Seriously, even some people here didn't have the patience to finish it.[...]I just couldn't get into it.
That's not "some people", that's just you :smug:

We, of the Codex, are bored (almost no decent RPGs being produced and nothing that would actually try to qualitatively improve the genre from it roots as simplistic dungeon crawls and PnP emulators without GM), jaded (crap being pushed as RPGs, players - mostly consoletards, actual ones - gobbling it up) and irritated.
Awesome description of the Codex and the state of the industry. Very true too, sadly :(

Yes he rated BG2 higher (99%, deserved, more like 90% but still deserved), but that wasn't the point. NWN 95% was his first RPG and introduced him to the genre.
Ah, for some reason I took "first" to mean "best" or "top of the list" or "#1", not just simply first chronologically. My apologies.

Pool of Radiance was it for me. 99% !!!111!
You mean PoR:RoMD? :smug:

How many of you guys were even around before the Atari 2600 hit in 1977, let alone were old enough to play RPGs on your PC and turn your nose up at the "console generation"?
Sorry, but 1977 for me is associated with Beneath Apple Manor on the Apple II. None of that Atari consoletardation :smug:
(OK so I only played BAM a few years later and I did have an Atari 2600 when it was out)

It's been suggested that I be shot, kidnapped, and even threatened with cock. Good stuff, but unnecessary.
The kidnapping idea was mine, and had you tried to play the game I mentioned on your own free will you would've understood why I thought kidnapping was a necessity :smug:

Of course now it's too late because you know what game I had in mind and can simply make sure you read a walkthrough beforehand :x

On a more serious note, enjoy FO2.

For something different, hit him with Wizardry 8 or Wizards & Warriors. Couldn't be any more different within the same genre and age.

Anyone considered that this may be an elaborate troll?

The thought occurred to me, but I didn't consider it important enough to consider it.

Another thing about Night of the Raven: melee damage, with some insignificant exceptions, is determined by the weapon damage, plus your character's strength and whether he manages to hit or not. In practice, no hit means a hit that is a scratch with 1/10 of the normal damage. You can tell whether you hit by the amount of damage you caused (the monster's health bar). The chance to hit is a skill (or several skills, one per weapon class) that can be increased through training if you have learning points (there are trainers in the game). Similarly, strength can be trained, as well as increased in other ways.

Fallout 1 would've been a better choice in my opinion. Better written, greater atmosphere, shorter game, higher quality throughout.

Give 'im Gothic I. I think Gothic II loses a bit if you haven't played Gothic I, and again, Gothic I is a shorter, more focused game.

Also, I never understood the 'whaaaaa Gothic is an adventure game' lamentations.

If he doesn't mind reading, PST is always a good choice. Some of the best writing I've come across in an interactive medium.

Or Pathologic if you want him to hate life. Let's see him persevere through that one, bwahaha.

I can see how some may not like PST. As far as RPGs go, it isn't that great, more of an adventure game, albeit TEH BAST 1 EVAR. I've played through it hundreds of times and yet the writing is such that it never quite gets old.

One of the testaments to it's greatness (and I've mentioned this before) is the fact that I actually care so much for the companions that I can never abuse them in any way, like I can never drive Annah to attack me or piss off Dakkon. I haven't played too many games that have done that.

Still, some people play RPGs for character development or TB combat and don't give a fuck if the story amounts to "stop ancient evil" and that's cool. Me, I like a little of everything but have yet to find a game that offers such
