Australian website Gameplayer has kicked off their "week of Fallout" with a nine page preview of Fallout 3 (it's okay, that pages are really tiny). It starts off with the expected "the fans are wrong" (which seems to be run of the mill in Fallout 3 articles these days) and moves on to how awesome Bethesda are by page 3:

This, of course, presents the challenge of containing its own ambition, something that Howard admitted Bethesda is always struggling to do: “We always go too far. Always. So it’s like a blessing and a curse. I think people look for us to do that, but at times we certainly bite off more then we can chew, so we worry about being able to create a game that competes with the smaller, more focused titles out there, in terms of polish.”

...

Most importantly, it felt like the right fit for the game, a happy medium between turn-based and real-time combat: “I think the VATS combat works really well,” he insists. “It feels like a throwback to the way many games were played, but visually it’s insane.” VATS essentially pauses the game and allows you to zoom into your target to get detailed information on damage taken and areas you can hit. Through the use of your action points, you can queue multiple attacks in a row, press go and be treated to a dramatic cinematic of your attacks taking effect.

...

The Pip-Boy can be used as a torch of sorts in dark areas, be personalised to output its images in different colours (although, as the team points out, why would you really want to when green was the original colour?) and check your internal radiation levels at a glance.

Add the geiger counter to the list of items not in the game. Though it is nice to know Bethesda are spending time on the things that made Fallout, "Fallout". I hope I get to make my PipBoy bright fluorescent pink.

I'm not usually one for the F3 bashing but :

with lead designer Emil Pagliarulo having dealt with the Dark Brotherhood faction in Oblivion, its ability to deal with Fallout 3’s plot in a more contained way should not be questioned.

DO NOT QUESTION US!!!!

In the end, Bethesda has embraced this franchise as only it knows how, with flair, creativity, respect and ingenuity.

Whether they have or haven't done that doesn't matter to me but DAMN is that sycophantic.

gosh fallout fans are so rabid and mean. They hate everything like bad games. Oblivion was the best game ever made etc.

what was so good about that dark brotherhood storyline anyway? it sucked beyond belief.

yes, but it was also the only half way interesting progression in Oblivion.

it would be nice if bethseda hired some actual animators for fallout 3 - people need to stop calling oblivion and f3 as good looking when the animations are so sketchy (havent seen a F3 video yet, but judging just from oblivion, morrowind, etc).

With statements like the above, and the fact that those who have worked with him openly refer to him as a genius (in a house of geniuses, by our estimation), Todd Howard was the obvious choice.
There it is again!

There is a dude on ag.ru(user named Svafard) , working in Buka, who visited presentation of F3 and he confirms that animation is crap. There were a total of 4 people(Buka employes) on this presentation and they all left with the impression that game looks like shit.
According to him combat was very unimpressive and VATS bored him even during the presentation.
He also says that they were shown lockpicking minigame(similiar to one in Oblivion)

Having seen the game, I also agree, basically. I wasn't impressed by combat. I wouldn't call the animations "crap", but I wouldn't call 'em good either.

If it's NOT good it's shit - unless you can proof otherwise.

You don't know Russian?
Ask your parents to translate it - I'm pretty sure they were taught the language of "brotherly allies" in school.

It's been known for a long time now that Fallout 3 isn't actually Fallout but post-apocalyptics FPS. Now the only thing left to hope for is that they might at least make it an enjoyable game.

Also, I'm getting a bit nostalgic:

You people are bitching about something as trivial as animations. It's good that Bethesda didn't concentrate on the graphics and instead chose to using the existing OB engine. Guess there isn't pleasing the Codice.

(although, as the team points out, why would you really want to when green was the original colour?)

Then why add the option? The dominance of green in the computer displays was an aesthetic choice faithful to the 50's atmosphere. Why not focus on tweaking other things, like, say, THE FUCKING STORY.

When are we going to get any real news about this game?

AAHAJAHAHAAH!

(seriously, expect an announcement of the mod kit pretty soon, and a gameplay video around E3. The rest will just be more of this nonsense)

It could be mediocre?
