I'm sure you could hardly contain yourself in anticipation of the next installment of this glorious series, so here we go. Links to the other episodes:

Games worth playing, Vol. I -- 1977-1985
Games worth playing, Vol. II -- 1986-1988
Games worth playing, Vol. III -- 1989-1990
Games worth playing, Vol. V -- 1993-1994
Games worth playing, Vol. VI -- 1995-1997

We're getting heavily into Golden Age of DOS gaming territory in this part. Amiga is still holding up admirably, but it doesn't exactly take a genius to see the writing on the wall (28 Amiga vs 80 DOS titles in total). 8-bit platforms have become almost completely irrelevant at this point; only a lone C64 game made it to the list (The Last Ninja 3).

Also, let me recommend this awesome thread; it contains over 100 quite entertaining and informative mini reviews from a single guy. Quite a few of the more obscure titles have been included based on his writings.

Extra notes for fellow Amiga fanatics:

For the Amiga versions, I've started noting whether a game has an official hard drive installer. Quite often, it's preferable to emulate an Amiga 500 with a hard drive, and install the game using the uncracked original floppies from the SPS archive due to various glitches, quirks or even outright crashes WHDLoad and the cracks may introduce. Remember, WHDLoad was mainly invented to be able to play incompatible old games on newer hardware (e.g. A1200, A4000); with emulation, we actually do have better options. I am going to update my earlier threads with this info as well.

Most notably, all Gold Box games are way better on an Amiga 500 as you don't have to wait for *minutes* when saving your game into a new slot for the first time. Another example, the WHDLoad version of Ishar 3 introduces substantial wait times when opening and closing the automap, making me want not to use the damn thing at all—this problem is not present in the HD-installed game on an Amiga 500.

Of course, this means the copy-protection is not bypassed and we need the original manuals, but scans of those are easy to come by these days. In a way, playing with the copy-protection intact is the more authentic experience :obviously:

You included Flashback as a 1992 adventure game entry but not Another World for 1991:

Pity Lemmings probably wouldn't fit into any of your categories. :M

Fair point, it's now included. I loved Another World as a kid, I replayed the 20th Anniversary Edition about 5 years ago and it hasn't lost any of its charm.

I included Flashback because I never finished it, then kinda forgot about Another World. But yeah, if one is included, the other should be as well.

Lemmings doesn't quite fit into the "Tactics" category, and I just have to draw the line somewhere. I have excluded some of the few action oriented games that I like such as Nebulus, Paradroid, Speedball 2 and Rick Dangerous 1-2 for that reasons.

Why the Amiga version of Lure of the Temptress? I thought the DOS version offered the best music and sound, when using with Roland MT-32

Indeed, fixing. Catching errors like this is one of the reasons why I decided to share this list, so keep them coming!

Well Wolfenstein 3D and Prince of Persia (1989) all fit that criteria and you didn't include them... :M

Plus if you're going to make a series of threads called "Games worth playing", but don't want to see people posting classic games because they are console titles, then maybe you should change the thread tile to "Western PC Games Worth Playing"

Are We There Yet? from 1991 is a pretty good The Fool's Errand-style puzzle game with an overarching plot. The final puzzle is much easier and instead the theme is Americana.
I assume you're going to count Ween: The Prophecy under '93?

Further still, western PC games from these five genres only.

But I say who cares, let the guy have his thread. The title should be more specific but whatever. Plus it's an interesting rare insight into a piece of vidja game history long forgotten, e.g vol I 1977-1985 . Guy is surely an oldfag walking fossil.

Well, I'm gonna turn 43 but sometimes I already feel like you described ;) I didn't want to put a whole dissertation into the thread title, and these are the genres that I'm interested in. Just image it's called "Comprehensive list of all Western RPGs, adventures (including action-adventures and text adventures), plus a select few strategy/tactics games, and some simulation games, originally released on personal computers". Quite a mouthful, and I'm sure some people would be unhappy about that title too. In any case, my criteria is described in detail in the first post of the first thread.

Like I said, it started as a personal list, then I thought why not make it public. I've learned about a few interesting games from the comments already, so for me personally it was worth sharing it. All such lists are kinda personal and subjective, otherwise you can just go to Mobygames and browse everything, unfiltered... but how useful is that? I'm always looking for "opinionated" lists/recommendations myself.
But I guess I could just say "computer games" in the title, that would sort the console problem for once and all :M

How about Shadowlands?

or Siege to tactics section.

This game happens in same setting as Magic Candle-series.

CRPGAddict did cover Shadowlands but shat all over it and many of his commenters agreed. On the other hand, some folks on LemonAmiga loved the game. I take anything the Addict says with a large pinch (or sometimes, a bucketful) of salt, as he was unimpressed with games that I'm quite fond of on a number of occasions, plus sometimes his justifications are really lame (complaining about the lack of economy and "linearity" in EotB, for instance). He gave 0 points for gameplay for this one... eh, come on... Now I really want to play it, it cannot be that bad! I find the concept and mechanics intriguing, plus I like puzzles.

Siege looks very interesting too and I'm looking forward to playing the Magic Candle series, so adding that one too. :salute:

The title music of the DOS port of Shadowlands is catchy as hell. They could've gone a bit easier on the "orch hit" samples, but I still like it a lot.

My two most vivid memories of playing Another World (which was rented from a local Blockbuster Video store for 3 days for my Super Nintendo console) were: 1. that it was the very first time I noticed slow down in a game due to hardware limitations. 2: my step-father had a heart-attack while I was playing it upstairs in my room and had to be rushed to the hospital via ambulance (he was released later in the day though). But it still conjures up negative personal associations because of that.

I also have vivid memories of the game, the ending scene with the surprise twist made a big emotional impact on me. And of course experiencing such a great cinematic story (in the best sense of the word) on the A500 was unbelievable around 1990 when half of my friends still had some shitty IBM compatible with Hercules/CGA/EGA graphics (VGA was still expensive as hell for a few more years, especially in Eastern Europe).

I had an Amiga 500 for a few months but after the joy of my C64 it was a disappointment so I sold it to a guy who used it for a video toaster for his public access cable channel, I think. It wasn't until years later while reading the EAF that I discovered that even die-hards of the Amiga computers on that forum admitted that many of its games, especially earlier ones, were inferior ports of C64 titles. It still had some great games though but I didn't come in at an optimum time to experience that.

I had an Amiga 500 for a few months but after the joy of my C64 it was a disappointment so I sold it to a guy who used it for a video toaster for his public access cable channel, I think. It wasn't until years later while reading the EAF that I discovered that even die-hards of the Amiga computers on that forum admitted that many of its games, especially earlier ones, were inferior ports of C64 ones. It still had some great games though but I didn't come in at an optimum time to experience that.

That's true, coming from the C64 I also noticed that many of the ports of games that existed for the C64 as well were quite lazily done. But there are many glorious Amiga originals and superior pre-VGA/Soundblaster PC ports. I got my A500 in 1991 I think, at that time there was a very large catalogue of excellent Amiga games already (I think I started with Populous, Midwinter and Monkey Island).

The A500 was definitely ahead of the pack when it came to cutting edge graphics and sound in games for the home market but once I got my first IBM VGA box - a Tandy 286 - (which was the next computer I got after the Amiga), it became a game changer for me, especially when I played Wolf3d that first time, but I still can't say I never looked back. My C64 was my favorite computer of all time.

Necro ahoy!!!
Might wanna add Pax Imperia to the tactics category.
It is mac exclusive 4x with interesting ideas. I have no idea if it is good enough, but everybody list the negatives as too complex which is not a negative.
The windows sequel is much more popular though.

Looks interesting, but Win95 only, therefore excluded (the list is for DOS and Win 3.x only).
