Due to the *enormous, unprecedented success* of the first volume, I'll keep going with the second episode -- list of games worth playing from the 1986-1988 period. Go and read the intro of the first thread if you want to understand my motivation for compiling this list, and the "rules". Links to the other episodes:

Games worth playing, Vol. I -- 1977-1985
Games worth playing, Vol. III -- 1989-1990
Games worth playing, Vol. IV -- 1991-1992
Games worth playing, Vol. V -- 1993-1994
Games worth playing, Vol. VI -- 1995-1997

The more perceptive among you might notice the debut of the "Simulation" category. That's because I've started developing an obsession with campaign/story-based simulators.

As always, suggestions for the best ports, patches/bugfixes, or classics that I somehow managed to miss are welcome. We're still a few years behind the time when PC/DOS asserted its absolute hegemony with the widespread adoption of VGA/SoundBlaster/MT-32, therefore the number of DOS entries is still in the single-digit range.

One of the more interesting highlights of this collection is the relative large number of C64 cartridge conversions (meaning zero load times!), especially the super-prestigious cartridge versions of Neuromancer, Wasteland and Ultima V!

RPG
1986
  • Bard's Tale II: The Destiny Knight, The (Interplay) [Apple IIgs]
    All other ports are buggy

  • Might and Magic: Book I: Secret of the Inner Sanctum (New World) [DOS]
Must use DOS version because MM2 expects a leveled-up party from MM1

  • Phantasie II (SSI) [Atari ST]
Only 8-bit originals are bug-free (combat is easier on the 16-bit ports)
Amiga only has P1 and P3, hence the Atari ST version is recommended so we can import the winning party

  • Rings of Zilfin (SSI) [Atari ST]
If it's a good port, otherwise the C64 version

  • Shard of Spring (SSI) [C64]
  • Starflight (Binary) [Amiga]
  • Wizard's Crown (SSI) [C64]
  • Wrath of Denethenor (Sierra) [C64]
1987
  • 2400 A.D. (Origin) [DOS]
  • Alternate Reality: The Dungeon (Datasoft) [Atari 8-bit]
Must use original Atari VAPI disk images, or 100% cracked version, which is hard to find

    Or 100% C64 crack: https://csdb.dk/release/?id=200257

  • Deathlord (Independent) [C64]
Consider playing Apple II version with Rikkles' Deathlord Companion app

  • Dungeon Master (FTL) [Amiga]
    Use v3.6
Original Atari ST version does not have directional stereo sound like the Amiga port

  • Eternal Dagger, The (SSI) [C64]
    Sequel to Wizard's Crown

  • Faery Tale Adventure: Book I, The (MicroIllusions) [Amiga]
  • Legacy of the Ancients (Quest) [C64]
Use cartridge version for fast load times
    https://csdb.dk/release/?id=128480

  • NetHack (NetHack DevTeam) [Windows]
    https://www.nethack.org/

  • Phantasie III: Wrath of Nikademus (Westwood) [Atari ST]
Only 8-bit originals are bug-free (combat is easier on the 16-bit ports)

  • Ranarama (Graftgold) [ZX Spectrum]
  • Tower of Myraglen, The (Unknown) [Apple IIgs]
  • Wizardry: The Return of Werdna - The Fourth Scenario (Sir-Tech) [SNES]
    English translated SNES version
    http://www.romhacking.net/translations/2061/
1988
  • Bard's Tale III: Thief of Fate, The (Interplay) [DOS]
16-bit ports are very buggy, must apply drifting's patch to the DOS version
    https://github.com/ChrisAubuchon/BT3-DOS-patch/releases

  • BattleTech: The Crescent Hawk's Inception (Westwood) [Amiga]
    Has official HD installer

  • Demon's Winter (SSI) [Amiga]
    Has official HD installer

  • Legend of Blacksilver, The (Quest) [C64]
Use cartridge version for fast load times
    https://csdb.dk/release/?id=128480

  • Might and Magic: Book Two - Gates to Another World (New World) [DOS]
Must use DOS version because MM2 expects a leveled-up party from MM1
    Amiga port looks better otherwise

  • Mines of Titan (Westwood) [DOS]
Extended remake of "Mars Saga" from the C64

  • Omega (Independent) [DOS]
  • Pool of Radiance (SSI) [Amiga]
    Has official HD installer

  • Questron II (Westwood) [Amiga]
  • Sentinel Worlds I: Future Magic (Spaceport Malibu) [DOS]
  • Star Command (SSI) [Amiga]
    Has official HD installer

  • Times of Lore (Origin) [C64]
C64 original is the best, every other version is a bad port

  • Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny (Origin) [C64]
    C64 cartridge version
    https://csdb.dk/release/?id=187483

    Or upgraded DOS version
    https://exodus.voyd.net/projects/ultima5/

    2021 IDE64 release

For the Bard's Tale games and Dungeon Master, modern remasters/remakes may be the best alternatives. I haven't played them personally, though, but the remastered Bard's Tale games are probably next on my "retro replay list" (I think I'm suffering from the Seven Year Itch of gaming. The last year I've been re-replaying some old classics I last played about seven years ago, like Dungeon Master, Might&Magic 1+2, and Phantasie 1-3.).

Yes I'm aware of those remakes, but I think the originals of these particular games have aged extremely well. Also, I'm in the "crisp pixels or go home" camp, I just love to see those pixels, so I honestly prefer the graphics of the original Bard's Tale games to the manually upscaled and smoothed new versions. Another selling point of the remakes is the automap, but I have zero care for that either, so...

Yeah, the remade graphics looked disappointing, especially when the real pixelation of the Amiga versions look so much better than the fake pixelation of modern retro games.
As for the auto-map, I understand there's a legacy mode.
Anyway, I've played BT1-2 three times, I think, and BT3 once (it was unplayabele without the UOP), so I'll give the remaster a try. I'm curious if it still retains some of the very crude mechanics of the originals.

Another couple of BBC Micro games to add to the list. Both adventure games......

Imogen (an absolutely wonderful game, with some great puzzles which often contain cool humour, like the bit at 2:45 in the vid).......

And Spellbinder, with that fucking excellent music.....

Hey man, these two are very cool! Adding to the list. I really like the tune of Spellbinder. Imogen is not even on Mobygames... but then found them both here.

Nice link! Just playing Imogen now. Just love the design of some of the puzzles. Still a fantastic, simple, relaxing game.

The Amiga version of DM is probably the best bet. I played through a modern port, Chaos Strikes Back, and it lacked the directional sound. You also couldn't drink directly from a fountain.

Probably not of interest to you, but the first FPS in the style that the genre would be known for came out in this period. Midi Maze, in 1987. Its incredibly simplistic and I don't think you can properly play the MP for it anymore, but its an interesting thing to play.

Legend of the Sword (Silicon Software) [Amiga]

I'm glad to see this on your list.
It's one of the few Adventure games I remember fondly, and was a minor hit back in the day, but seems totally forgotten today.
Well, almost. There's a whopping 13 view on this:

Return to Chaos, you mean?
If so, the lack of directional sound is disappointing.

The Amiga version of CSB is also the only one with the in-game map and related spells, I think.

The mini map (only 3x3 squares IIRC) makes it slightly easier to map.

Your Simulation category could include Arcticfox (1986) by Dynamix, a 3D tank simulator (albeit a fictional tank in a futuristic setting) that was among the first few notable games developed for the Commodore Amiga

Nice, very interesting looking game! Adding to the list.

I see Star Raiders II listed and I'm guessing that's the official "Last Starfighter" version? Aric Wilmunder shocked a bunch of people a few years ago when he released a proper sequel with stuff like planetside combat that he'd been working on but got shelved.

Hmm, that's interesting, I will definitely add a note about that. This is what I originally had for "Star Raiders II":

Yeah, that's the officially released version. It was supposed to be a tie-in with the Last Starfighter movie, but when the movie bombed they retitled it as Star Raiders II. It's a good game. It just doesn't feel entirely like a true Star Raiders sequel (because it wasn't meant to be). Wilmunder had been working on his version and was nearly done - only had some minor tweaking left - but Atari's decision to rebrand the Last Starfighter rendered it useless. He moved over to Lucasfilm and used some of his Star Raiders II work to help them with the fractal graphics they put into the Eidolon/Koronis Rift/Rescue on Fractalus trio. He ended up releasing his version of Star Raiders II online in 2015. Makes you wonder what else some of the old programmers might have lying around in their closets and garages...

I stumbled upon those, and while technically interesting, the gameplay seemed nothing to write home about, so I did not include them. Do you think they're good games?

Not really. Ballblazer (another LucasArts game) is though, but I think it came out before 1986.

Fun fact: The Star League logo in The Last Starfighter is a variation on the Atari logo with a sword replacing the middle line.

Another major update: added about 20 classic Macintosh text adventures. Most of them are in this list. I've developed a fascination towards illustrated text adventures with monochrome 1-bit graphics lately; they have a very different feel to colour graphics, they remind me of ink illustrations and copper-plate engravings which I love.
