I create the closest thing to myself in the char creator, increase the muscle mass a bit, and make him a fighter or barb. Typically a chaotic neutral mercenary type. That's my character in nearly every game.

If it is a game with a setting I know well and genuinely care about, for instance Daggerfall or Morrowind, I will try to make a character based on the naming conventions and social customs specific to each race. But in a general sense, for most games I make characters that rely on melee abilities and tend to name them after Germanic kings and queens, or ancient Catholic theologians, martyrs and saints. If it is a game like Fallout, I try to make and name characters based on whatever reading materials I'd imagine a vault might have access to for so many decades, and how those born after the bombs fell might interpret such things out of context.

It depends a lot on the game.

I used to always make archers and mages in games, not because they were overpowered but because I could be as far away as possible from the enemy. The last couple of years though I have moved to melee classes, especially bards or some type of melee fighter. I even rolled a warrior in WoW and moved away from being an eternal healing machine. Gameplay changes a lot (better or worse, depends on who you ask) when you can't safely strike the enemy at the distance and I do find melee characters enjoyable even though most of the time they kind of suck in low levels.

I tend to stick to dwarfs or humans, with the occasional tiefling here and there (before, I was a tree hugging eco friendly elf 24/7) and whenever possible play a persuasive character so I can talk my way out of situations. I find that barbarians can be fun but dumb barbarians not really.

Lastly, I am in the habit of playing with good characters or a good aligned party. The only time I went full evil was in KoTOR 2 and just because sith powers were cooler.

How big is this library of names?
Actually not as big as it might seem, considering how often royal names recur and medieval naming conventions were typically culturally isolated. But there is sufficient material to draw from and the more history I read the larger it becomes. I usually name characters after whichever figure I've recently read about and admired, or take from whichever ethnic group and period I'm studying, while a few are long time favorites. Some examples taken from specific figures I admire that I've used often are Augustine, Ambrose, Origen, Basilides, Clotilde, Maria, Clovis, Gregory, Chlothar, Louis, Æthelthryth, Maelgwn, Owain, &c. If a game has you create an entire party I will usually just use some of my favorites.

If God is for us, who can be against us?
Kill them. The Lord knows those that are his own.

It was refreshing when Kreia deconstructed my Lawful Stupid Jedi’s principles.

My name is Erik, so my chars are usually named Erik. If I'm feeling adventurous I'll name them Erikk, Eirik, Eirikk, Erich, etc.

Depends on the game but my go to is usually stealth/rogue type. High crit chance, stealthy, avoids fights where possible.

Goody two-shoes who specializes in melee combat for the first playthrough, then evil maniac compulsive liar for the second. It's fun to see both extremes.

Make the Codex Great Again! RPG Wokedex Strap Yourselves In Codex Year of the Donut Codex+ Now Streaming! Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is. Serpent in the Staglands Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 BattleTech Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
Depends on the game, but I have a few basic templates I like going back to:
* A normal person who is not a roided out killing machine, and thinks it's insane to willingly enter lethal combat over and over again. Will try anything to avoid being in violent situations, but will still try to complete the objectives of the game in other ways. Usually this character ends up with thief skills.
* A snooty intellectual, usually ends up as a mage but might be a noble duelist or marksman kind of guy. Hates to get his hands dirty and his mission is to get through the whole game without sweating.
* Roided out killing machine. Refuses quests, doesn't read lore, doesn't really look for treasure, and just walks around fighting stuff. Of course if the main quest is about killing things, sign me up. Even if ranged combat is the focus of the game, I will try to make a melee build work.

Basically I like going against the grain, building a character starting with the weaknesses.
