I would say that it is not "piracy", as "piracy" it is illegal trade. The correct term would be "fair use" or "abandonware". In fact, I was already kicked off the GOG forums once when I posted a link to download fully functional GTA 1, which was freeware a few years ago.

Users in general were completely hostile towards the publication of the link, which could be called false moralism. Anyway, it's good to see that users here react in a friendly way to these things. :)

And this game disappeared and I really have no idea what it was about.
The first Soul Reaver was delisted because Squeenix wanted a quick and easy solution to making it work on modern systems, so they just incorporated a fan patch into the official release. Hilariously, that fan patch used an unlicensed video format and had plenty of other issues, so they had to delist the thing and create a proper solution. After Crystal Dynamics was sold to Embracer, everything went quiet and the original game remains delisted to this day.

In any case, the best way of playing Soul Reaver today is with the HD mod for the Dreamcast version.

The dudes on Gog are a bunch of pansy asses.
Why did they get so hostile because you posted a fucking freeware version of GTA 1?
It's certainly nothing felonious.

Thoughts on this remaster for December on Soul Reaver 1&2. I don't recall GOG having the first reaver but only the second. Nvm, all 5 games are in my games. Currently, I guess the original Soulreaver was delisted.

And this game disappeared and I really have no idea what it was about.

That was a multiplayer game that was killed without mercy after a troubled lifespan, even when it was gaining traction. I remember that a humble bundle included it but it was like a month or so before the game shut down.

There's also a cancelled reboot that was being developed for the seventh generation of consoles:

Given the shitty dialogue and the rough gameplay, though, we're probably better off without it.

On the internet, writing shit posts.
DarkUnderlord we need a "PIRACY IS WONDERFULL FOR GAMES PRESERVATION" button
I'm just saying, if no one sells Spec Ops, the Suffering or Universe at War, then they only way to preserve and distribute them is through the seven seas.
I know they pulled The Suffering, but did they also pull Spec Ops?
Yeah, it got pulled everywhere. I don't know why, maybe the Yanks didn't like there being a popular anti-war game showing the horrors of PTSD and American war crimes before starting their foreign intervention shit again.
Officially it's because some licenses expired, but the timing seems awfully convenient.

No, they do not. At least moderation does not. Just the other day they deleted my post about a fitgirl repack.

Abandonware is not a real legal term but an excuse for people to pirate stuff without guilt. On the other hand free use is a legal term, but it has to be established beforehand. Companies don't know how to handle copyright though. This happens because everything's owned by a third party made up of moneybags kinda people. Your publishers.

Find free downloads is one thing; getting duped on ebay for 2x-1,000x+ the price is fucking horrible. Original company makes nothing. Meh! Fucking legalize. It make you wonder if you own anything.

NINTENDITIS! That inflaming rash can't be scratched except with a cutlass in hand, a parrot on thine shoulder and a steady ship to pilot through the Dark Waters of the High INTERSEAS! Yarrr harr harrr.

If they didn't want us to "pirate" it, then they shouldn't have pulled it off shelves. They aren't making money either way, so why should they care other than having an ego trip?
I do wonder just what is the rationale behind such a decision.
It's clearly not helping them make any money.

Companies do know how to handle copyright.

ESA members recently denied researchers and historians exemption to DMCA - which is a fair use by definition. Rare forced World of Spectrum to remove early 80's titles. Rockstar / Take 2 sued a guy hosting open-source reimplementation of GTA engines and the case went to court. Nintendo uses dirty legal tactics of bankrupting emulator companies by filling lawsuits in states without SLAPP legislation.

It does not mean that some evil 'corporations' are to blame. People actually voted for a guy that wanted to extend copyright to last forever. Sadly he passed away, and his good-for-nothing colleagues reduced it to 100+ years, ignoring the will of the people.

The only way emulation can be legal in the strictest sense, is if a full reform of the copyright system is esablished. A bill was proposed last year, to reduce copyright terms back to 28 years in the U.S. With a 28 year extension applicable with a fee. When patents on technology and medications expire after 20 years, there is no reason why the copyright on Mickey fucking Mouse had to last nearly a full century.
