Devotions are fun to play around with. You should be fine if you stick with the specialisations that your build's focused in. My level 40 Witch Hunter has Blizzard and Tsunami. I'll have to up OA for Blizzard to be more effective, but that's what I like about the system. Still, the Witch Hunter is pretty much facerolling everything on Normal Veteran. Survivability may be a problem on Elite and Ultimate tho

If I didn't like PoE but I think Grim Dawn looked cool, do I even bother to try ?

The only downside is that the screen seems to be clustered and all the enemies blend in with the environment, like D3 (which I didn't played, but it looked like that).

In general you want 1 good offensive devotion that's appropriate for your build, and the rest focus on building up health, OA, and defenses.
Some highlights for that purpose are (in no particular order): Empty Throne, Viper, Sailor's Guide, Chariot of the Dead, Behemoth, Scales of Ulcama, Targo the Builder.

I'd also add Tortoise, Assassin's Blade and Hawk to the list. Manticore is the best multi purpose attack proc as it reduces all resistances (including physical, I think) and armor. It is, in my opinion, the best attack proc devotion even if you don't need the Acid and Poison damage it gives. The debuff it does is that good.

Tortoise yeah, assassin's blade definitely for a physical attacker. I'm not quite as high on Manticore after the -resists got debuffed a bit with B31, and you can now get almost the same effect by putting a Mark of Dreeg on your weapon. Guess it depends on whether you want the 6 devotion points or the component slot.

I started this one today (level 17 ATM) and so far I think PoE is better at everything, even graphics and atmosphere. Grim Dawn feels OK, but it's just too conservative

So far, lvl 30 and it's gud. Good ol' tank never gets boring. But I'm not quite sure whether it trumps PoE. I like the dungeons and art design in PoE more, I also seem to remember to fiddle around with the skill system more in PoE. It's not as elegant as in GD, but deeper. Itemisation is a draw.

Both are gud in their own way.

Yeah you're right, I had misread the Manticore skill thinking it was the flat -resist like Mark of Dreeg. In that case yeah it is still pretty excellent, though not as brokenly powerful as it once was.

One aspect where I think GD trumps POE is level design. There are secret passages, hidden treasures, optional paths that you can unlock. It encourages and rewards exploration whereas in POE there is very little to explore, you just comb down levels for mobs and loot. Remains to be seem how this hold sup into endgame.

There's some devotions that give -20% reflect damage. One of those plus good resistances means you'll take basically no reflect damage.

This, make sure your are at max resistance to your own damage output and there should be no problems.

So far my Vitality caster meets no resistance on Veteran difficulty. This is probably the easiest playthrough I had. Vs anyone so far at lvl 33 (I cleared all hidden areas and bosses with almost being 10 levels below) I just put down my two Totems, cast Devouring Swarm and afk until enemy is dead. No need for potions or anything. I got that Turtle devotion but I have not seen it activate so far. I am almost done with leveling all Shaman skills I need and I am slowly switching to leveling Occultist now.
The next big tests are going to be SoT and that portal into Chaos realm in Act 3.

The turtle shield looks like a yellow bubble around you so you'll know it when you see it, at least. I'm pretty much done with my Warder now. Got all my gear via intense harrassment of people on my steam friend list for trading, got all 50 devotions, I feel like I'm done with him now. Dunno what else there is left for me to try.

Agreed. I was just discussing with a friend that PoE is excellent if you're into theorycrafting, and of all the H&S aRPGs, it has the flashiest presentation for demonstrating skill synergies. I don't have a problem with the "feel" of the game; attacks feel meaty enough. However, in terms of level design, it can't match up to Grim Dawn's - firstly because GD's maps are beautifully handcrafted, and secondly because the layouts are diverse, so you don't have that same "boxed in" feel from PoE. This, among other things like the insane number of item mods, makes GD my favourite H&S aRPG atm.

There are things about PoE that I really enjoy, like being able to customise your skills down to a tee (<3 my Blood Rage + Flicker Strike Shadow with pumped up crits and Firestorm + Lightning Witch), but given how versatile and diverse GD's character builds can be too, I'm fine with this trade-off.
