After a few hours of HOMM3 at work I start to get fatigued by the hero ferrying troops and weekly tax collector clicking.
I wish they fix these and retain the 2D graphics, but HOMM4 just looks and plays too darn goofy compared to HOMM3.

Play Age of Wonders instead.

You don't NEED to ferry troops to your main hero every week.
At some point you don't have to bother with visiting resource generating locations any more either. Or you can find/make and play maps that don't have them at all.

Who's your favorite hero in every faction and why?

Castle: Easily Edrik. Griffons are Castle's most dangerous unit and giving them armor makes them even better
Rampart: Mephala, duh
Tower: Probably Astral? You need double wisdom anyway and a better Hypnotize is more significant than a better Chain Lightnng
Inferno: Zydar. Sorcery expertise has great potential
Necropolis: Vokial. Enough vampires can take down anything
Dungeon: Dace - minotaurs are dungeon's workhorse and tactics is great for a warlord
Stronghold: Tyraxor - Wolf Raiders can use both an offensive and defensive boost
Fortress: Easily Tazar but Drakon is very good too

I always take a random hero, unless the map starts with a specific one.
It's boring to always play the same hero and same faction, and you don't learn much from it.

But once the game has started I like secondary characters with specialized skills and abilities like Navigation, Scouting and generating extra income. And Logistics heroes for well, logistics.

Some skills are just too important to miss out.
Really hurts when I miss Tactics and Logistics on the main hero.
Offense is also a big deal when the majority of the units are melee hitters.

Maybe they should up the skill option pick on level-up to 3 instead of 2.

Fucking retarded Russians with shit taste causing mod drama and ruining a good idea. http://forum.df2.ru/index.php?showtopic=37647&st=20
Ruins was pretty much finished lineup wise and then the author went on hiatus for months and now he says he's redoing it and is replacing the perfectly good original lineup:

with this prosperized generic shit:

FUCKING BEAR.

Please send help. The HeroesCommunity thread has people who are actually sane and realized the original concept of Ruins was great. This is how Russia starts another cold war.

Dessa is best hero (my avatar): Logistics and Air Magic. King of fast travel.

By the way, do you have any idea how the Chinese play this game? It's insane. They go with impossible odds all the time. Like a dozen units against thousands of behemoths. And they steamroll the battles with 0 or 1 casualties. Clever use of spells all the time. Like constant Wall of Force or Quick Sand, and many many others.

Galthran for me, but that's because I play almost exclusively Necropolis. You got me interested in how the Chinese play the game. Got any good video showcasing it?

That's where I learned about that almost 10 years ago: https://www.celestialheavens.com/forum/7/11267
Oh fuck, the pictures are missing. :(
This thread is ok: https://www.celestialheavens.com/forum/7/11546 but he doesn't explain everything in details, that was in the first thread.

Ok, it seems that these guys have picked up on this:

I like water too though. Clones and Teleports are fun.

Bless and Prayer are not shabby either.

And Air Magic: Expert Haste is always nice, especially coupled with Expert Ballistics and Tactics to seriously storm a castle with infantry. And Expert View Air for keeping track of enemy heroes.

And Fire Magic for the most fun spell: Expert Berserk.

But yeah, Earth Magic is OP.
