I must admit I never saw what's the fuss about the original Thiefs either. Some entries of Hitman and Splinter Cell felt much better in all respects to me. Damn, even this Metal Gear mini-mission (Ground Zeroes?) is better than Thiefs for me.
It's the setting and the ~immersive sim~ design principles.

I am confused by his new "village idiot" flair. Does that mean the Codex is some kind of village? Wouldn't it rather be "Hivemind retarded part"? We are not a village.

When you have already been tagged it, it destroys that. I shouldn't have to explain this to you.

That depends on how you approach it. Complaining about getting one and talking about how shitty it is will only encourage people to push. Ignoring it, taking it on, underplaying and being self-deprecating and not letting it get to you will prevent people from getting more material to make fun of you with.

Don't you remember what school was like? This place is totally like it.

Yeah, yeah 'nother Peterson vid, skipped it to the apt part:

A while ago I started playing Thief Gold, last time I played I was at The Guild, but honestly the best mission so far is the one that is not a standard stealth mission... Bonehoard.

Also MGS Ground Zeroes is gold.

Gotta admit that I've never played Thief, only played the demo of Thief 2, played a pirated copy of Thief 3 and haven't bothered with Thief 4 because from all accounts it's a horrible representation of a Thief game. I will probably pick up the first three via GoG at some point though.

But what I have played is the many, many fan missions in The Dark Mod - I fucking love that game, and that's made by Thief fans without any concern for marketability in this modern gaming industry of ours, so it can be as niche as it wants to be. The missions are widely varied in quality, but if you don't think you can get into classic Thief games, just download TDM (which despite the mod title is now completely standalone).

The main issue I have with the original thief games (1,2) is the whole guards whacking thing. I understand, what thief wouldn't have a blackjack? But the idea of banging all the guards on the head in a level is just ridiculous!
"Why don't you just not bang them then?" You say...
Well, I tried doing that, but I couldn't really do that in the 1st mission of thief 2 wherein you have to escort some lady.

So I was wondering, how viable is the series if you don't whack any guards? Can you even complete them? Is it just that one escort mission?

Also, are there any suggestions to stealth games that don't have you whacking guards?
My playstyle is just the opposite. I want to bang every guard.....I mean I want to whack every guard on the level on the head, and then I can freely explore the map. It is a shitty way of playing, but I enjoy the game this way the most.

Dishonored 2 clockwork mansion or that time-travelling one, Chaos Theory Panama Bank, Hitman 2 Russian party or that Blood Money one you can go in as a clown, a pizza deliverer or a technician. All these missions have superb design and enough openess to allow you replay them a dozen times and still be fun.

I'm sure Thiefs have missions as good as those, but saying it surpasses those feels like nostalgia to me.

Thief 'shines' if you're in the right mood to get stressed as entertainment and are gud enough to ghost. That's the most 'intense' thief can get...

provided you aren't a ADHD kid that can't actually into waiting or planning. It's almost diametrically opposed to a speedrun / fps mindset. The blackjack is for casuals because it 'simplifies' the game over time so you can run around bunny jumping.

Also immersion (i hate this word) helps a lot in making that 'tense situation'. It's likely true that you can decimate almost any enemy in thief or just run away into shadow, but you should forget that when playing.

Also i agree that thief level design has been surpassed by games with other mechanics that thief never had. But since those are 'other' mechanics, it's pretty much irrelevant. For getting lost on a large map with secret passages or unexpected rooftop routes, Thief is still very respectable... mostly because recent games are kind of crap about this, even (or especially) open world ones.

To say nothing of the highest tier of fan missions that took all of that and turbocharged it.

Yes it surpasses those missions. Have you even played Thief? CT Panama Bank is okay but nowhere near even the weakest mission from Thief.

Yes I've played Thief and stopped after a mission that was boring and full of zombies moaning "WROOOAAGHH". Couldn't take the game seriously after that.

Are you saying this is better than CT Panama Bank, D2 Clockwork Mansion or Hitman Russian Party?

The Sword, Life of the Party, and Return to the Cathedral (despite muh zombies), just to name a few, are all superior to those missions (which I agree are very good).

The other problem is you're cherry picking. D2 Clockwork Mansion is great, but it's also the best level in that game. Thief has several levels of that quality or better. There's no comparison.

Chaos Theory panama bank is probably the best that game has to offer, yet, it feels like a thief level. The same with clockwork mansion, which is a great and innovative mission in Dishonored 2. The same with the time travel one. But they feel like thief levels. Hitman games I do not compare at all, since gameplay is different, and to be honest, it's kind of buggy in both blood money and silent assassin.

Those dishonored levels are great because they follow the principles laid out by thief games. The clockwork machines in D2 is a homage to the children of karras in a way. And the other levels are just ok. Not bad, but nothing that incredible. The end solution of the first dishonored 2nd DLC, brigmore witches, is a copy of a thief's end.

Ct is the 3rd splinter cell game, and the only one that is really great, and most of the other missions in CT are very similar to those of the previous games.

Thief is here since a long time. One may say it's good because of nostalgia, but there are still FM missions being produced, that offer innovations and creativity in an old engine that surpass those of the games mentioned.

I prefer Thief to Dishonored because of the simulationfag in me. That being said, I also had a lot of fun with Dishonored 1 and 2.

Dishonored 2 clockwork mansion or that time-travelling one[snip]

In the case of Dishonored the reason at least some levels can be compared to the level design in Thief makes sense, since at least three big names in the Thief Fan Mission community went on to work at Arkane Studios. It's very likely that Dishonored got made because of their influence, and it's even money that Stephen Russell was hired for voice-acting in the sequel for that same reason.

Can't speak for the other titles you mentioned, except to say that it's good to see Thief's influence and high standards spread to other stealth titles and resulted in at least ONE good level from each title. But considering even Thiaf managed to pull off one level with good level design... well...
