This actually isn't true and is a common misunderstanding.
The ages that races become adolescents/adults/etc., is for cultural reasons, not physical. All(? most?) playable races physically mature the same rate as humans but age slower(or faster) from there on. As Gorion's ward you were raised as a human and were treated like an adult even if you weren't human.

Aerie is a special case because she was kidnapped, we don't know how old she was but she was old enough to fly and attempt to save another from being kidnapped. She likely was seen as a child to her people, though.
