Wouldn't both cases boil down to a "Fuck you, I'm doing what I think is right" attitude?

Oh, yes of course. But one “fuck you” have all rights, the other one is just... ordinary “fuck you”.

Not only words matter, who is speaking matters too.

I think the last time I played a Spidweb game was either 'Castle of the Winds' or 'Exile 3' back in the 386/486 days and really liking it. I know I've never bought one but after reading all of this I finally downloaded and installed the Avernum 6 demo.

I haven't played it yet, but it's there, I even modified the party. Who knows? I might get into this as I'm very jaded like many people here and could have a good time with it. I think it could be a very subtle but effective marketing scheme. Okay, I doubt it, but it worked for me.

The point is, after slogging through all these pages and Mr. Vogels as well, (I do it it all the time) my very, *very* favourite quote is:

Oh, and there are some people who will respond to things about your work by posting an angry smily or some other image meme. Ignore these people. If they had anything valuable to say, they would use words, like people, instead of jpgs.

I love that, sums it it quite well.

Anyways, good job, the icon is on my desktop, I have a customized party and I'm ready to roll.

Well, Avernum 6 seems to be a lot better than Avadon, that's for sure ;) I only played the demo since I want to play all the series from the 1st game to the 6th one and I'm currently in the 4th one. I just wanted to try the demo of the 6th part and it grabbed me right from the start.

I stopped playing Avernum 6 when I have realised that there are less combat options than in Exile. For example I constantly missed a "defend" option.

What about parry or riposte?

There are skills which you can train into when your stats are high enough. In Avernum 4 Parry required Dex 6 and Defense 6, I think.

In Exile you simply press the defend button to make the character defend instead of doing anything during the turn.

Parry&riposte in Avernum 6 are passive skills, right? That's not comparable at all with an active ability.

When I tried Avernum 6 demo, it just didn't grab me, I found myself using very similar tactics in every battle, it just felt mechanical and boring. Though there was those new battle disclipine thingys, it seemed pretty obvious what to do with them most of the time, so it often just amounted to extra clicking to have them.
And for a game where you can move so freely I felt the power level scaled too quickly - you had to hit different battles at a quite specific level or it was just a walkthrough.

I liked Geneforge 5 though, when I could create a slightly different party constantly by varying creations it kept it more fresh I felt, player skill mattered more in how I approach a specific encounter and not just how I build my party. Or maybe the setting and C&C made the battles feel more relevant too.

Both played on torment ofc.

Which would be a better purchase in terms of gameplay mechanics: the Exiles or the Avernums?

Exile by far.

More party members, more spells, more enemies.
