Self-Ejected
Fucking droppedI think they said no spears or similar weapons will be in the game.

Wtf. There's a lot of soldiers with polearms on display on the trailer videos I've seen. Those guys are just for decoration?I think they said no spears or similar weapons will be in the game.

To be honest, I approve every decision the team has taken regarding the scope; because I can see how this game could end up being too ambitious. As long as basic elements like the character development system aren't implemented in a retarded way I'll be fine with the abscense of minor things like spears.

This. "Engine limitations" prolly doesn't mean it can't be done, just that it can't be done easily or cheaply.
Warhorse is not an indie studio but it's no giant corp either. And they're making a game, not a full-blown simulation of history. For the budget they have the game looks unbelievable. Skyrim cost 80 mega dorra. This game is what, 10 million at most?
Plus, of course, show me an action RPG with a full-blown spear mechanic. I for one can't think of one from the top of my head. Not to mention spears are definitely not suited for 1v1 or 1vSmallGroup fights - which is what you typically do in aRPGs - dumb kung-fu flicks notwithstanding. In short, implementing pole weapons would be expensive, labour intensive and would make no sense.
Originally they said the 500,000 USD on kickstarter would be 10% of the total budget, so about 5 million.
But I have no doubt the total projected budget has increased since then. It is still a pittance compared to western AAA popamoles though.
Time and effort management, as well as opposition to specialist roles in development teams are things Vávra has been writing about for years. I'm sure he's trying to NOT do things as they've done them on Mafia II. A friend of mine was a level designer on MII and from what I've heard, there was a lot of micromanagement, specialists spending weeks on simple assets and not doing anything when there wasn't need for assets (wate of man hours), even scrapping of entirely finished content and starting over. (or cutting it off for DLCs)
I wonder how big Warhorse is at this point, iirc Vávra used to advocate smaller teams.
It is not that much cheaper. It used to. On the other hand, there is zero governmental support, while in places like Montreal you get generous government support.Poland and the Czech Republic are for games what China is for tech gadgets. They also seem to have superior management skills, because big publishers also have studios in Eastern Europe, but can'T achieve the same quality and output with them.
Have you never read any of HHR's screeds against the evils of Montreal's gaming industry? What kind of support is there in the Union of Canadian Socialist Republics?
Also I've read Witcher 3 received some grants from the Union of European Socialist Republics.

Looks pretty awesome.
There are plenty of Dark Souls fans that will enjoy the new challenge.I have the alpha access but I still haven't tried the sword combat. Anyone tried it yet?
All I've seen are some YT videos. Looks very cool but also awfully complicated tbh. I reckon it's gonna put off a lot of people. My suspicion is although prestigious gamers call for complex and difficult combat mechanics a lot of them actually prefer simple combat disguised as complex.
Looks pretty awesome.
