Regarding the were-beast -- no reason to pull the lever, werebeast's rampages are swift, they turn back quite quickly (couple of ingame days). Several dwarves that are outside will occupy the werebeast long enough for it to transform and flee. Do not forget to quarantine the attack survivors though. Also the newly acquired paranoid trap specialist should create an early stage defense system to protect the Kastle form future werelizards ambushes.
Regarding elves -- one partially robbed caravan is rarely enough to start a war.

Option 1: Pulling the lever and sealing everyone inside so people start going crazy and paranoid, the natural social order devolving into complete chaos seems exactly what my character would enjoy so that takes my vote. Besides even if the prolebashers were mobilised we would still be far too late to help anyone, so all we can do now is ensure the safety of our glorious leader.
Btw Grimwulf can we at least have some wounded before closing the door? When i became medic i've thought my job will be more... exciting...
I'm not complaining - at least i'm not miner, but Azira will grow rusty at this rate.

I'm not complaining - at least i'm not miner, but Azira will grow rusty at this rate.
Considering that I am apparently a great nurse, which translates to being able to knit dirty socks from cobwebs, I think your job is now up for grabs. Did I hear you volunteering as a miner?
I for one am looking forward to working under with the world famous Azira.
Sigh, at least that would be the case if the KKKommisar was pulling all strings by himself. In this clown-run circus you will probably stay where you are, while I get assigned to be an assistant mudcrab wrangler. Sad.
But I pray to the Spirit of KKKommunism to slap some sense into people.
Huh. Probably the first time I've seen Grim express any kind of sympathy.
Gods help them distract the beast for long enough.
I take it back.
Meanwhile on the Surface.
*walks towards the weregecko*
SIS, THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?! RUN, you fool!
Leave me. Tell the others to hurry up and seal the fortress. And tell my wife I love her.
Yes, DF has lesbians too
Hissssss
You won't hold a damn second against this thing!
*nods* I know... But someone has to try.
Damn... Damn it all.
*sprints towards Unib and Baud*
What's your name, sis?
Unib. Unib Shovestaves.
Follow my lead, Unib. I'm Baud, by the way.
Are you ready to die?
No. I am about to piss myself, truth be told.
Me too.
*the weregecko is dangerously close now*
*raising their trembling fists*
In the combat log below, Baud is referred to as "militia captain" and Unib as "recruit"
Let's go kill that bastard.
*rolls towards Baud and plunges its teeth in his leg*
AW, FUCK!! *tries to hit the beast to no avail*
*stands aside, hesitating to engage*
GET OFF ME!
Hssssrrrr
UNI-I-I-IB! WHERE ARE YOU-U-U?!
*paralyzed with fear*
*manages to land a solid punch*
*the monster is now ENRAGED*
*SCREAMS in pain*
BAUD! *finally jumps into the fray*
*lets go of Baud and turns his gaze to Unib*
Hisss
*catches breath and tries to overcome the pain*
Argh! *struggles to stand up*
*assaults the weregecko again*
*stands up from the ground*
HISSS
*falls on the ground, teeth flying all over the place*
*towering over Baud*
You fffffFFFFFFUCK!
HISSSS
*stands up and attacks the beast in berserk rage*
*counter-attacks with lightning speed*
*screams in agony*
*rushes into the battle again*
*doesn't let go of Baud*
*hisses at Unib violently*
*steps away, unable to control fear*
*turns back to Baud*
Baud... I'm sorry.
*everything becomes fog: distant, unreal*
Ghhhnhh
*completely gripped by terror*
*loses himself in unbearable pain*
LET! HIM! GOOO! *charges*
Hisssss
B-Baud..?
*coughing blood, unable to stand*
*crawls away from the beast*
*walks towards Unib*
Meanwhile in the Outpost
Who should pull the lever?
PULL THE LEVER!
Yes, but who should do it?
I can do it.
Wh-- OUR BROTHER IS OUT THERE FIGHTING!
*shrugs* I'll survive. I always survive. That's all that matters.
PULL THE FUCKING LEVER!!
Do you want me to pull it?
PULL THE LEVER ALREADY!!!
Every dwarf is fucked up in the head. We were born like that. Even if you assign a top priority task, sometimes dwarves will simply stand in front of the lever and scratch ass, contemplating the purpose of life.
Meanwhile on the Surface
HISSS
*spits blood and teeth*
Please? Pretty please?
I said NO, Tobul! We will stay right here in Goldsect!
Come on! The Queen's messengers said Redlabored is a very promising fortress! Don't you want to become a part of dwarven history?
I want to live. I want both of us to live.
I'm tired of local dwarves looking at us as if we were sick or something. All I need a fresh start. Together with you.
No. It's dangerous out there, and you know it.
But you will protect me, right?
We will be FINE, Unib! My father Eryfkrad will come along!
No offense, but your father is just an old alcoholic. I can't babysit the old geezer AND his little girl.
He-he. Take my hand.
*sigh*
We will be happy there. You and me.
...
Is it a "yes"?
What can I say? Dwarves in love make stupid decisions.
YAY! I will pack our stuff right away!
I'm gonna regret this...
FACE ME, CREATURE!
*turns around in surprise*
Not... done... yet...
Hisss
AAAA-- AGH?!
*bites Baud's face, tearing his cheek and teeth*
RRRRRRRAAA *goes FULL BERSERK*
*coughs blood*
Hisss
Let... GO!
GH- GOOOODS!!
*passes out*
Meanwhile in the Outpost
The sounds coming from above are terrifying...
*sobs*
*drinks and mumbles* Pull the lever... It's time to live in isolation... It's time...
I'm sorry - Kalin, was it?
Watcharront?
Have you seen my wife? Dark hair, broad nose, beautiful aquamarine eyes?
Fark off, cunt. *pours himself a drink*
*whispers to herself* Unib, where are you?
Why the silence, friends? No reason to be sad. I'm sure there is a glorious battle raging up above! One that will be remembered through centuries!
PUSSIES, all of you! Baud is the only dwarf with balls around here! Baud and Brother Frank!
I'm sure he is pulling one HELL of a fight!
Hours later
Kommissar?
Hrm?
It's morning outside.
Hrmpf.
We should open the gates for a short while. To honor our dead with a proper burial.
The beast is still lurking outside.
It's been quiet for hours. Besides, werebeasts turn into original form when the sun rises.
... Open the gates. Tell the others I give you ONE WEEK to haul the bodies, charcoal, and whatever furniture we left outside. Then we seal ourselves underground FOR GOOD.
24th Felsite, 126, Late Spring
The Surface
Unib..?
She's dead, kid. And so is Baud. Poor bastard. *looks at Baud's mutilated corpse*
*sigh*
*crying over Unib's body*
Baud. Rest in stone, you glorious bastard.
Help me with the bodies, Spigot.
hhh
HO-LY SHIT
No. Way.
HOW ARE YOU STILL ALIVE?
hhh
CARRY HIM TO THE HOSPITAL! NOOOW!
25th Felsite, 126, Late Spring
The Outpost, Hospital
Baud was struck so hard, his teeth penetrated the fucking ground, landing inside the Outpost
*examines Baud's wounds*
*unconscious*
*mumbles to himself* Pull it together, Azira. Symptoms! Remember what the goblin gypsies told you! Paleness indicates severe blood loss... Legs are no good, so the ability to stand lost...
Wounds... Where do I even start?
Write it all down, Azira. *scribbles a medical card, sweating profusely*
*enters the Hospital* Doctor?
NOT NOW!
When I became medic I've thought my job will be more... exciting... Can I have some practice?
Practicing on your nearly dead brother? Way to go, Reinhardt! Bring me GALLONS of water, ALL SOCKS and ALL THREAD we have!
But the water is outs--
*infuriated* KEEP THE GATES OPEN UNTIL THE KOMMANDING PHYSICIAN TELLS YOU OTHERWISE!
25th Felsite, 126, Late Spring
The Outpost, Hospital
*enters the Hospital*
I'm... busy. *yawns* Go away.
You need to sleep, doctor. Pity.
And let him die? Even though I didn't like him in the first place... The dwarf suffered to save us all.
How is he doing?
Dwarven coma. *mumbles* I think...
Sad.
Can't let Reinhardt touch him. Might as well slit his throat. Less pain, same result.
I can help. Enthusiasm!
I don't trust you. Nothing personal.
Sad. Have to resort to the old method.
What..?
Go to sleep, doctor.
Look--
Go to sleep, doctor.
Sleep. *walks outside*
*starts tending to Baud's wounds*
Yes, I made a call to replace Reinhardt with Bliblablubb temporarily. Baud is balancing on the death's door, we have no time to fuck around.
Azira can't pull this on his own. No doctor can, no matter how skilled he is.
Baud is beyond fucked up.
28th Felsite, 126, Late Spring
The Outpost, Hospital
Azira.
Kommissar.
Let's talk about Baud. How soon can he get back to work?
Not in the foreseen future.
"Greatest dwarven surgeon," my ass.
How am I supposed to suture his wounds? How many times I told you that a HOSPITAL needs SUPPLIES in order to function! We have no thread.
We only have ONE bucket here in Redlabored, and NOBODY can ever find it!
And we have NO cloth for wound dressing! Not even dirty socks!
But hey! At least we have BINS, right?
How th--
Don't even start, Grim! I did a damn fine job with what I had at my disposal.
Now it's up to him.
Hrmpf.
And Grim... We need to wall him up inside the hospital.
Baud was bitten, wasn't he?
It's not about whether or not Baud was bitten, but the sheer number of bites he suffered. I lost count at twenty.
God fucking dammit, do you EVER have good news?
Next full moon will rise on 19th Hematite. Almost three weeks from now. Plenty of time to seal Baud inside the Hospital.
How very humane of you, Azira. Let the dwarf who saved your worthless life FUCKING DIE of thirst and starvation, alone and confused, sealed inside the hospital.
As if you care about Baud!
I DON'T! You miss the fucking POINT! You are all EQUALLY INCOMPETENT, but it wasn't BAUD who should have died out there! It should have been KALIN and his butt-fucked band of loiterers! Baud took one for the team, although NOBODY FUCKING ASKED HIM, and now you - the FUCKING KOMMANDING PHYSICIAN - sentence Baud to even more suffering instead of DOING YOUR GODDAMN JOB and getting him back on his feet!
This debate is pointless. If you have any other ideas - I'm all ears.
I want you. To do WHATEVER it takes. To make Baud come back to his senses. And DECIDE FOR HIMSELF!
Decide? What is there to decide? In three weeks he'll turn into a beast and will most likely kill every single dwarf in Redlabored! If he even survives that long.
If he wishes to leave the fortress instead of being walled up, I will fulfill this request. The bastard deserved that much.
You're growing soft, Grim.
I granted females the right to vote. OF COURSE I'm fucking SOFT, you duckbutt! Awright, go gather my administrators in the dining room. Summer is here. Time to make decisions.
Yeah, sure. Are you coming?
Aye. In a moment.
*goes away*
*turns to Baud*
What a waste. All those socks and other shit we spent. You should be ashamed, Baud.
BETTER YET, you should survive and make yourself useful. Somehow.
If you die on me now, I'll make Catacombs engrave a massive dick on your sarcophagus. Because dying now would be a dick move, Baud.
Ungrateful bastard. *leaves the Hospital*
MAKE YOUR KEY CHOICE
Summer is upon us, NO THANKS TO YOU!
Life in Redlabored will go as per usual, except THE GATES ARE CLOSED until further notice! No more sneaky attacks on my fortress until the GODDAMN KOMMANDER finally makes something resembling a military force!
I want to make it clear: each and every one of you FAILED! The cost of your failure is one dead dwarf, and another one suffering fate worse than death. TWO POTENTIALLY COMPETENT LABORERS GONE! Because of YOU!
The least you can do now is to FIX THE GODDAMN SITUATION at least to SOME extent!
But before we proceed with politics, gotta address the mutilated elephant in the room
Current agenda: Baud's fate
In case he doesn't wake up in two weeks and therefore won't be able to decide for himself, we must do what is necessary. But what exactly?
Option 1: wall him inside the hospital.
No way in and no way out. He will turn into a werebeast on the 19th of Hematite. Werebeasts do not require food and water booze, they are basically immortal, although they die of old age. Werebeasts can also regenerate any wounds upon transformation. If Baud survives until the next full moon, he will live. Or rather exist.
There is a downside, though. In case he is not infected, which is still possible, we condemn him to die of thirst and starvation, even if he pulls through the injuries.
Option 2: fight for his life till the bitter end.
Fetch him food and water. Tend to his wounds. Hope for the best. If he turns, Kalin and the Prolebashers will put him out of his misery. It is better this way.
Option 3: execution.
Kill Baud for no real reason. Because we are that fucking special down here.
Everyone has a vote. If Baud wakes up, the result of this poll is void - he will instead decide his own fate.
1. Pick up to 9 dwarves (10 including yourself) to serve in the Prolebashers. DAS RITE, full squad!
Remember, you can replace any recruits at will. Here is the current roster (doesn't include children):
Administrators cannot be conscripted.
If you decide to play it SMURT all of a sudden, feel free to request additional information on any specific dwarf. Most of the unassigned ones weren't introduced, but maybe there is a decent fighter among them.
If you conscript unassigned dwarves (dwarves without a nickname), you must also pick their weapon of choice.
2. You can set a new training schedule. Otherwise I will leave it at "5/10 dwarves must train in the barracks at any given time; they can only sleep in barracks; they may sleep whenever they want."
Btw, your squad is still incompetent, but everyone is feeling fine except Merc. According to Azira's health reports, Merc is constantly tired. Which means that most of your recruits barely break a sweat during training.
Your management is like a goblin's arse. Short, stinking, and the only outcome is shit. My Quarters are still under constructions. The Food District - most demanded industry - is not even half-done. Kommunalka? Not even started.
But you've dug out Wood District, THE ONLY ONE WE DON'T NEED! Because there is no wood in Redlabored, no more surface-dwelling!
Do you know what your problem is? Trying to do everything at once, but lacking the dwarfpower to do it. What Redlabored REALLY needs is grunts. Dwarves with no specialization. Ones who will haul shit and construct shit. THAT's what we need!
This time we'll try a different approach. I will list activities, and you will choose the ones we should work on. The fewer activities you choose - the more grunts you'll get, increasing the progress of Redlabored in selected activities.
1. Masonry. Stone blocks and stone furniture - quite essential. Requires 4 dwarves.
2. Food and Booze. We still have a whole lot of brewable/cookable shit lying around. Requires 2 dwarves.
3. Carpentry and woodcrafts. Again, there is plenty of wood stocked inside Redlabored. Enough to keep woodworkers busy throughout the Summer. Requires 2 dwarves.
4. Farming. Yes, we still have unplanted seeds. Requires 2 dwarves (planting needs to be done fast, before the Seasonal window runs out).
Now, since you decided to DIG OUT WOOD DISTRICT for some reason, we might as well use it to set up temporary workshops. If we need to, that is.
5. Metalworks. Tools, weapons, armor. Requires 2 dwarves (one to smelt ore into metal bars, one to strike the forge).
6. Textiles. We have plenty of pig tails and some hairs, so we can make thread and cloth. Requires 2 dwarves.
7. Clothing. No use without textiles. New clothing out of thread, cloth, leather. Requires 2 dwarves.
8. Bowery. Glorious wooden crossbows. Requires 1 dwarf.
9. Gems. Unlike metal ores, we mined quite a number of uncut gems. Requires 2 dwarves.
That's it for activities. You may also choose our mining direction:
1. Dig out Redlabored, because you've done a SHITTY job making chosen facilities.
2. Fuck Redlabored and fuck the Kommissar - we must dig deeper, to the mines. Because Andnjord.
Option 1 is safer. The dwarves are slowly going mental due to stress. We need beds, private rooms, dining hall and recreation, functional industries.
Option 2 is more aggressive. The sooner we obtain decent equipment - the sooner we may open the gates, relying on the Prolebashers. However, digging too deep might lead to very tragic consequences.
You are free to change your assistant. Again, Kommanding Physician can't do a lot without a proper hospital.
Keep in mind that you have total control over your personal assistant. Your orders overrule Helly's. So MAYBE instead of constant ranting on lack of medical supplies, you should make your assistant craft them?
Except you were elected as the broker until the end of this year. OH, WELL.
WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THE TAMARIN?! Let him out of the cage? Wait until you get a private room and put the cage there? Something else?
Sqeecoo is now playing Dominions. She doesn't need no KEY CHOICES, she is the one creating them. That said, feel free to post whatever crazy ideas are bouncing in your Machiavellian mind. Maybe we lack FLOODGATES this time?
That's it for Spring, at long last. I'll give it a couple days for the administrators to cast votes.
Meanwhile, I'll do another aftermath-style update. No RP, just hard numbers, maps, layouts, random comments and notes that didn't make it in the updates. And also more stuff regarding the weregecko battle and Baud-Unib's sacrifice.
We were unbelievably lucky. If it wasn't for Baud, this would have been the last update.
Hell of an update bröther. Had the music playing throughout and it was a blast reading it. God bless DF combat engine for creating that stuff.
And my vote goes to Option 1. Seal him up until the 19th and see if he's infected or not. If he turns into a weregecko then we can say we have a pet monster for our future zoo, if he doesn't we can always open the wall back up to finish treating him. In any case the dorf deserves a statue in the future grand hall.
And Helly , if you get us started on the metalworking I'd be able to forge us picks for the miners and other moderately useful things like weapons for the prolebashas. They'd be made of copper sure, but it beats having a wooden axe or no picks at all. Also we could get grates and chains (water cistern) weapons for Suckavati's traps, coins for Kalin's bonaz... Just sayin'.
PS: Grimwulf , would it be too much to ask for a table of content at the start of the thread?
Option 4: Exile him as soon as we're able, but treat him well until then (Option 2 if we can't exile him). If he survives, he should be given a chance, if only because he saved our fortress. But we can't take this chance ourselves. This is the more humane solution.
Activities
Let's make it simple: How is our stockpile of food doing? If it's adequate for the year, then we'll focus on Masonry and Carpentry for now.
1. Masonry. Stone blocks and stone furniture - quite essential. Requires 4 dwarves.
3. Carpentry and woodcrafts. Again, there is plenty of wood stocked inside Redlabored. Enough to keep woodworkers busy throughout the Summer. Requires 2 dwarves.
8. Bowery. Glorious wooden crossbows. Requires 1 dwarf.
9. Gems. Unlike metal ores, we mined quite a number of uncut gems. Requires 2 dwarves. (We'll use them to trade for clothes and stuff)
If not, then we'll focus on farming and masonry. Food making will wait until we need it, but we can develop our textile industry to go with the farming then.
4. Farming. Yes, we still have unplanted seeds. Requires 2 dwarves (planting needs to be done fast, before the Seasonal window runs out).
1. Masonry. Stone blocks and stone furniture - quite essential. Requires 4 dwarves.
6. Textiles. We have plenty of pig tails and some hairs, so we can make thread and cloth. Requires 2 dwarves.
7. Clothing. No use without textiles. New clothing out of thread, cloth, leather. Requires 2 dwarves.
Metalworks will wait until we actually have any kind of metal. About that... - Wait, do we enough metal to do anything actually?
Mining direction
Redlabored is the main priority. For now.
Is it however possible to go for some exploratory excavation 2, 3 levels below? Just to check whether we can quickly find a cave or metal? And if we find anything, we'll report to the commissar and ask for a risk assessment.
Yes, I thought of that the other day. This thread is hard to navigate even for me when I need to remember some stuff from previous updates. Didn't expect so many comments.
Table of contents coming up tomorrow, along with a mini-update and Grimwulf's drunk rant.
Option 4: Exile him as soon as we're able. If he survives, he should be given a chance, if only because he saved our fortress. But we can't take this chance ourselves. This is the more humane solution.
At least it's not our decision to make. Baud is in coma - we can't EXILE an UNCONCIOUS dwarf. If he comes back to his senses, it will be his call. We will grant him that much.
Edit: hurr durr, I'll post sober replies to your other questions tomorrow. Grimwulf is a doge atm
Fellow dorfs! I am astounded by the great deed of Baud and Unib! They risked their lives to save all of us.
But tell me fellow comrades, how come our hero Baud cannot even get deserved treatment? Why does he have to stay in the dirty hospital, without any bandages and fine treatment?
The corruption! The corruption has taken over some of us. And it should be swiftly dealt with unless we want to perish soon. And let me tell you – who is to blame?
Spigot! He is the one corrupted. It is his fault we have to stay sealed. It is his fault the fortress is not supplied!
I seem to remember we had some tetrahedryte (or however you spell that), copper+silver ore lying around, but will need confirmation from the Wolf of the Grim.
A Dorf Fortress isn't dorfen until its hallways are filled by the smoke and ashes of its metalworking industry.
