In case anyone was wondering about the lack of updates, I've been giving feedback and testing v44 of the translation patch (covering Ch13). The public release should be out soon, pending corrections.

Update 111: Chapter 7-1 - The Visitor (part 4)

Elbert and Arthur mop up the remaining prisoner escort:

part1gpjgb.jpg

I send Larentia to attack this overwatching archer; no dice.

part2hmkgg.jpg

However, he's used up his action for this turn now, so Sherpa can take care of him.

part3zokxz.jpg

Sherlock, Ruby and Enid follow up by taking out the prisoner escort:

part419kf1.jpg

We've freed another POW.

part5y1jyp.jpg

Sherpa successfully counterattacks the second spearman.

part60ujc8.jpg

On turn 9, the fourth and final prisoner is moved from the north of the camp.

part7xtkxz.jpg

Larentia makes a hit-and-run attack, while Fyodor escapes:

part89fjul.jpg

Aegina hangs back to use a vulnerary.

part92ukeh.jpg

Elbert provokes the archer on overwatch, leaving the way open for Christine to attack an escorting spearman.

part109gjmm.jpg

Izerna heals Sherpa, since he's taken another hit. He wipes out another bowman:

part11sljv9.jpg

Which is good, because we need to catch up to General Abus.

part12dvk8y.jpg

Next turn, Arthur deals with another escort.

part13c5krt.jpg

That's the third POW liberated.

part14r0kul.jpg

One more use of physic allows Izerna to level up. Only luck this time though.

part15uwjk1.jpg

Larentia takes point, landing a spear hit courtesy of adept.

part16xtj46.jpg

A few more inconsequential skirmishes break out, but Sherpa's group continues to advance. A pilum takes care of the guard next to Abus:

part173wj7i.jpg

part181ljmj.jpg

Looks like there are multiple sentries posted on the southern path. Sherlock is struck by arrow fire, along with his horse, which is killed.

part19dyjlf.jpg

In the north, Elbert's group have wounded a spearman, allowing Aegina to capture him.

part20icj6x.jpg

Only skill on this level.

part21p0kz3.jpg

Arthur strikes down another soldier.

part22c0jtv.jpg

Czene comes under attack while regrouping in the south, but evades and crits her assailant:

part235ije5.jpg

Sherlock trades for a vulnerary so he can get back to full hp.

part24rhkmt.jpg

As the fighting continues, Czene's knife claims another victim.

Update 112: Chapter 7-1 - The Visitor (part 5)

Sherpa clears another bowman:

part14ujei.jpg

A nice level too.

part2tljuh.jpg

Elbert's group moves to attack the northern outpost, while Sherpa draws the attention of an armour knight.

part36pkk4.jpg

As team B fights patrols to help Abus escape, Aegina gets the lethal hit on the remaining guards in the north on successive turns.

part4uhjal.jpg

part5t9jx9.jpg

The second POW makes it to safety. This prompts more Imperial soldiers to arrive:

part6f5k8l.jpg

Another sentry is down.

part7zdjzh.jpg

Sherpa gets hit again, but his counterattack dispatches his assailant.

part8ytkxe.jpg

Izerna uses physic to heal him from a safe distance. The nearby Imperial archer proves slippery, so I'll have to get him next turn.

Enid crits him with the lady sword:

part9k3k4d.jpg

POW #3 escapes, leading to more patrols arriving.

part108zk9z.jpg

Bowman #2: Look, I don't give the orders. Just do your job, soldier, unless you want to get court-martialed!

Pallas Riana claims another victim.

part11g2kcq.jpg

Nice, speed and magic.

part12irk8p.jpg

Elbert's team meets up with Izerna:

part13g8kcx.jpg

Larentia is struck by a raijin arrow, although blocking with her shield reduces some of the damage.

part14kaj4x.jpg

As her comrades move forward to engage, the overseer of the central outpost falls.

part156pkpj.jpg

Larentia falls back on the next turn to use a vulnerary, while Sherlock and company finish clearing the southern path.

part16eyjqx.jpg

Elbert and Christine begin fighting the Imperial reinforcements:

part17i7k89.jpg

Arthur guts one of them.

part18qrk2p.jpg

Which puts him at level 10, so he'll be promoted after this mission.

part19qik9k.jpg

General Abus is escorted away.

part20vtk2o.jpg

Naturally, Commander Dallas is most displeased.

part21egk3w.jpg

Dallas: ...Get moving... I SAID, GET MOVING!!! FIND THOSE SNEAKING RATS WHO DARED TO RUN FROM ME! IF YOU DON'T COME BACK WITH THEIR HEADS, I'LL HAVE YOURS PUT ON A PIKE!

Guard: Y-Yes, sir!

The battle in the nearby forest continues.

part22kekzb.jpg

Elbert gets slightly more buff.

part230wkki.jpg

Scouring the area for the remaining Imperial soldiers soon yields fruit. Sherpa and Larentia take point.

part24spkte.jpg

Enid takes advantage of the situation to pick up another kill.

part25b6kh5.jpg

Excellent, that's the second point of magic she needed.

Update 113: Chapter 7-1 - The Visitor (part 6)

The remaining Imperial soldiers are soon hunted down:

part19ikpc.jpg

Elbert's shield is broken in the process.

part2d4k1f.jpg

There goes the last one.

part3ixkuz.jpg

Ruby is still behind on equipment skills for promotion.

part4ajkq0.jpg

Dallas is defiant as we confront him:

part5doj1s.jpg

It matters little, as he is overwhelmed and cut down.

part6iqjal.jpg

With their mission successful, the Sinon Knights regroup and return to Navaron. General Abus meets Reese in his office:

part7mjkcy.jpg

Abus: Bah, don't fret over me. I'm not worth the trouble. It's my fault that I got myself and my men captured in the first place... I'm a worthless failure...

Reese: You must not abandon hope, General. You're still alive. The other prisoners said that if you hadn't been there, they might have lost their own hope a long time ago.

Abus: Thank you, Lord Reese... I owe you a life-debt.

Reese: For now, you can repay me by concentrating on getting better. Your body needs to heal.

Abus: ...If I wasn't in this shape, I'd have tried to kill those dirty fiends myself a long time ago! So many of my men died in that camp for nothing...

Reese: My condolences, General... Regardless, I am sure your lieutenant will be happy to see you safe.

part8hpkwg.jpg

Abus: Who are you talking about?

Reese: Dame Ellis, naturally. She helped us to plan this entire rescue operation.

Abus: I haven't the faintest clue what you're talking about, Lord Reese. You must be mistaken.

Reese: But... your lieutenant, she...

Abus: Fyodor is my lieutenant. Has been for the past decade.

Reese: What?! Then... who is she...?

Abus: I have no idea. I can't remember the last time I had a woman serving in my corps.

Reese: What's going on here...?

Ward arrives at the door.

Ward: Excuse me, Lord Reese.

part9iejrz.jpg

Ward: ...Indeed, there's no mistaking it. That letter bears the seal of the Duchy of Bornia.

part10e1jvi.jpg

part11i8ki0.jpg

Ward: What could this mean...?

Reese continues to read the letter:

part12z0j41.jpg

Abus: A knight of Bornia... a knight who bows to the Empire...helped save my life?

part13drjxt.jpg

part14jej21.jpg

Ward: To think that an enemy knight could sneak into Navaron unaided...

Abus glances at him silently.

Reese: ...General Abus, I don't believe this woman is our enemy.

Abus: I'm not sure what to think. Until now, my dreams of vengeance have helped me go on living... I believed that the Empire was just like Dallas, with all of his cruelty... and yet, it was an enemy, a knight who served the Empire... who risked her life to save mine...

Reese: When I met her, she seemed like a very compassionate person. At least, that was what I felt. Maybe to her, the fact that you marched under different flags wasn't what was important...

Ward: I suppose Lord Vester is living proof that not all the people of Bornia feel the same about the war... Much like ourselves. There must be a great many people simply trying to do the right thing.

We'll be learning more about this subplot later on, so for now I'll return this Imperial prisoner we took during the mission:

part150ljv2.jpg

...and collect the bounty on Hazrij.

part16e9kdv.jpg

Last but not least, Arthur's promotion.

part17mwk94.jpg

part1849kb4.jpg

part196ok7c.jpg

part20pqjpj.jpg

part21wnjoq.jpg

part22aojdi.jpg

part237ujdk.jpg

part24gyj8l.jpg

part25y1kr9.jpg

That's +2 hp, +3 strength, +2 defense, +1 speed, and access to spears. The spear skill is based on his level at promotion, multiplied by 0.58 and then rounded down to the nearest whole number.

Update 114: Chapter 7-2 - Ancient Treasure (part 1)

part1d1kge.jpg

part2gcjnk.jpg

Reese: Of course, if it's within my power.

Lebough: The truth is... one of my closest confidants, High Priest Nagra, has gone missing.

Reese: Gone missing?

Lebough: Yes. I last had contact with him about a month ago. On my request, he was headed to the Liga Desert to investigate the ancient ruins there. However, he ought to have returned by now. I fear he may have lost track of where he was going... His task was a very important one, and I grow ever more anxious about his well-being...

part3ifjkl.jpg

A short while later...

part42sjgu.jpg

Reese: That may be so, but combat isn't the primary focus of this mission. We're just looking for the priest.

Rosalie: Lord Reese, I think you should be a bit more careful... The locals here say the Liga Desert is full of thieves and wyverns...

Ward: Wyverns?!

Rosalie: Yes, it seems there's a small population native to there...

part54pjs7.jpg

part5_2jpkzi.jpg

This is why I trained Aegina and Percy. Given the desert conditions, I'll be taking mostly light infantry. Dean (800), Sylvis (1100) and Thaddy (400) join the party. Percy gets a lightning orb, and 6 vulneraries are distributed just in case.

part6vuk3r.jpg

Although his mobility will be hampered by the desert, I'm taking Elbert along for provoke utility and because he's pretty close to promotion.

part7hgk4m.jpg

Flight is always advantageous in difficult terrain, so Larentia will be an asset here. Unfortunately I've exhausted the available throwing spears for the time being, so she'll be using swords at lower accuracy.

part88lk1y.jpg

Fortunately clerics are not slowed down in deserts, so Izerna will be able to keep up with the rest of the search party.

part9jkjnu.jpg

I'll be relying on Aegina to take care of any wyverns encountered, so she gets the blessed brace and a backup fire orb.

part10zqj3w.jpg

Dean's looking pretty buff with that brace augmenting his strength. I haven't kept exact track of his kill count, but I'm pretty sure he's at least halfway to recruitment.

part11i8jlq.jpg

Sylvis will provide ranged support, and if possible, use apeiron to help capture enemies with valuable loot.

part12tgj99.jpg

I feel like I should have deployed Thaddy sooner, stealing is pretty useful in this game.

part13crjml.jpg

Last but not least, Percival gets the eagle brace to help his accuracy. With lightning equipped, he will be at 94% to hit.

Arriving in the desert, numerous thieves and brigands are visible:

part14duktm.jpg

A lone wyvern is in the northwest, in range of the temple. Some priests appear to be being held hostage in the southwest.

part155ckzq.jpg

Lets take a closer look at the wyvern.

part161zj5s.jpg

Very high physical defence, not much is going to get through that.

part17dnkgy.jpg

However, it is vulnerable to wind magic, and critical hits to an extent. The archer near the temple is also a notable threat:

part18rajsa.jpg

After a quick reshuffling of starting positions, it's time to begin the mission.

part19o5kvi.jpg

Riddle: Any priest-folk are worth a good amount o' gold, so try not to kill 'em if you can! But if anyone gets in yer way, go ahead and kill 'em dead.

Desert Clan: Usual rules, then. You got it!

Riddle: I don't like the feel o' this wind... On a clear day like this? Looks like we might be gettin' a sandstorm in a bit...

part19_2j5kxd.jpg

Sounds straightforward, were it not for the wyvern and Riddle (who is the guy with a 5000 denarii bounty on his head at the mercenary guild).

Elbert takes point, and a local calls out to him:

part20n9jas.jpg

Horus: There's a wyvern in this here area, and there ain't a man alive who she can't burn to a crisp...

Everyone else advances, but Riddle's gang hold their positions. On turn 2, we learn what's happening with the NPCs:

part21rnk1u.jpg

Nagra: .....

Desert Clan: You got the right idea, keepin' quiet... Wouldn't want to wake HER up...

The sandstorm Riddle predicted has indeed emerged, reducing visibility.

part2240jgt.jpg

Sylvis takes an overwatch stance, while Larentia is struck by an arrow.

Update 115: Chapter 7-2 - Ancient Treasure (part 2)

Elbert gets the attention of the nearest brigand:

part1qzkbz.jpg

Dean takes out a thief armed with a swordbreaker.

part2izk5d.jpg

Thaddy uses a curative item on Larentia, allowing her to exact vengeance on the archer with her spear.

part30pjyd.jpg

This thief used his desperation skill on Percy, while the latter was equipped with the lightning spell (which doubles cripple rate).

part4ltjf8.jpg

As the fighting continues, Thaddy moves in to capture him, getting a level-up in the process:

part58mjau.jpg

Aegina sweeps away the brigand that attacked Elbert.

part6uqj73.jpg

That gets her to level 5.

part77yksz.jpg

Advancing through the desert and intermittent sandstorm, Dean cuts down another enemy via counterattack.

part82aka6.jpg

Meanwhile, there is some activity closer to the temple.

part9cbkez.jpg

Desert Clan: All right, listen up you lot! Better start coughin' up the goods, or I'll kill each and every one of ya!

Nagra: O God, please save us...

Hmm, that doesn't sound right. Didn't Riddle want the priests alive? A Verian priest not mentioning Veria in this situation seems unusual as well...

Larentia, Sylvis and Thaddy gang up on the next brigand:

part13fsjya.jpg

Next turn, Riddle is spotted at the temple.

part14i1jx1.jpg

Not someone to be trifled with. The wind ring gives +10 wind resistance but -10 thunder resistance.

part15r9j3d.jpg

Going to be tough to even hit him, never mind capture him. Thaddy is the only person I have that's fast enough to even get in an attack in melee range.

On the following turn, another thief emerges:

part16ccjle.jpg

Sylvis snipes his nearby friend with the deadeye (previously longbowman) skill:

part17hmko4.jpg

The two brigands in the southwest step forward to attack, but fail to land any hits. Dean crits one of them.

part18kajck.jpg

Thaddy puts his knife to work.

part19brj9f.jpg

Unfortunately, the second brigand survives the turn, and his axe severely injures Thaddy.

part20orjpe.jpg

Izerna steps in to use rehabilitate, while Sylvis takes care of the thief carrying loot.

part21r3jqd.jpg

He had 3000 gold on his person, pretty nice given the lack of income at the start of this chapter.

More speed on this level:

part22oijtv.jpg

As Larentia and Dean attack the brigand by the temple entrance, Aegina deals with the last enemy in the south.

part23vojbn.jpg

Percy switches to thunder to finish off the last guard in front of Riddle.

part24ymkq4.jpg

Elbert blocks Riddle's escape and takes a crit, but has enough hp to survive.

part22zmkwt.jpg

part22_2dnjyi.jpg

Izerna heals with physic, going up to level 12. She gains another point of luck:

part238xkup.jpg

Elbert is ordered to move away, and conveniently Riddle stops on the cliffs, which reduce his evasion rate to 0. Percy takes advantage of this, attacking with lightning at close range.

Update 116: Chapter 7-2 - Ancient Treasure (part 3)

The wyvern swoops in to attack Larentia:

part02gjpn.jpg

Aegina uses focus chant (the accuracy buff is essential here) in conjunction with Pallas Riana for the kill. Only 2 strikes are required, thanks to the first being a crit.

part1lgkgv.jpg

She receives a full level worth of experience.

part2mrk4t.jpg

Dean blocks the escape route in the west, so Riddle moves east instead. Thaddy positions himself nearby in order to steal next turn.

part3vojvz.jpg

Now I have a bolt knife, which will make capturing easier in the future. Nice level-up too:

part4fkk2y.jpg

Percy gets lucky with the RNG, striking down Riddle with a 45% thunder hit.

part5qbksm.jpg

He joins the level-up club.

part62ukua.jpg

Now I'll investigate what's going on with this group of priests.

part7qgj0n.jpg

The man sheds his disguise:

part8nnj2h.jpg

Desert Clan: Bet you wish you'd thought a bit more before coming here, eh? Well, you'll have plenty of time to regret being naive in the afterlife!

Dean dodges a brigand's attack, and thanks to adept, seals his fate.

part98xk1i.jpg

Elbert makes use of provoke during the melee.

part106hkv9.jpg

The second "priest" is down.

part111ljk3.jpg

Dean kills their leader:

part127mkr7.jpg

However, they had help waiting, and four more brigands arrive in the northeast. This guy in particular looks dangerous.

part139hjh8.jpg

part14b4k6w.jpg

In the meantime, I turn my attention to finishing off the ambushers.

part15dekz5.jpg

Just axe skill on this level.

part16d6jwr.jpg

Elbert takes point as the group takes up position by the cliffs:

part17wyjx8.jpg

Sylvis manages to hit Gorras with an overwatch shot, despite arrowbane.

part18g4kvl.jpg

Percy follows up with thunder, and then Dean's axe ends the threat.

part1924k6c.jpg

Elbert continues to lure in the remaining brigands. Aegina and Sylvis soften up the next target for Dean.

part20iskfy.jpg

This time, Elbert notches up a kill.

part21wmj6x.jpg

With the final brigand incapacitated, the fighting is over.

part22bekub.jpg

The real Nagra is likely inside the temple. The Sinon Knights move in to secure it.

Update 117: Chapter 7-2 - Ancient Treasure (ending)

Back in Navaron, Nagra reports to Archbishop Lebough:

part1vaj8o.jpg

Nagra: As for our search of the temple... We found it.

Lebough: You found the sacred orb?! So, it was just as the ancient texts said after all... Well done, Nagra. With this, we can finally start to take the fight to the Razites.

Nagra: But Your Excellency, the orb has been completely drained of its magic... Not even the robbers seemed to think it worth stealing.

Lebough: That shouldn't be a problem. It is said that when the Apostle awakens, so too will the orb. It will resonate with her bloodline and restore the orb's magic.

part2bajud.jpg

Reese arrives, interrupting the discussion.

part3ccjlb.jpg

Nagra: Yes, thank you for saving me from that dangerous place.

Reese: You are quite welcome. It was my pleasure.

Lebough: By the way, Lord Reese, do you know what this is?

Reese: A holy orb... correct?

Lebough: But this is no common healing orb that the alchemists can make. This is a priceless relic left behind by the ancient Lazberian Empire, crafted millennia ago. In other words, it is a unique artifact with no equal in the entire world.

Reese: It's that precious...?

Lebough: So, I have a favour to ask of you. I'd like you to hold on to this orb for a little while.

Reese: What...? Why would you entrust something so important to me?

Lebough: I'm afraid I can't say for now... but you'll find out soon enough.

Reese says nothing, apparently confused at Lebough's response.

part49gks1.jpg

Reese: I will protect the holy orb for you for the time being.

Lebough: Thank you, Lord Reese.

part56yj58.jpg

Reese leaves the office.

part6rpjoz.jpg

Interesting sentiment from Lebough, given what is about to happen...

That aside, the bounty for Riddle is collected:

part72jk7i.jpg

Starlight is a spell that first appeared in Tear Ring Saga, but the Berwick Saga version is a lot less powerful.

part8xikv3.jpg

I'll end the chapter here, since the rest is just inventory sorting and hiring any remaining mercenaries that need happiness points.

Well Riddle said to try to not kill the priests, so maybe the bandit said "sod it, maybe the others will follow once that one is dead". And isn't Veria a God or did I missed something?

Reading the next post, having bandits dressed as priests seems weird, except if they knew the knights were coming beforehand or if they are from a different desert clan.

Veria is a goddess (and sometimes called "Mother Veria"), so using the male form "God" goes against the references and information so far.

They likely had advance warning from a scout.

part95fk20.jpg

Verian knight: Since then, the vanguard has fallen, and we've lost 3,000 men already...

Bernstol: Curse that crafty Zephyrus...

Verian knight: Sire, if this continues, we will soon be besieged here in Zaltzhaim Castle... What shall we do?

Bernstol: I will form a corps of soldiers we know we can trust, and launch an all-out assault on the Empire's main line.

Verian knight: You're going to lead the battle yourself, Margrave Bernstol?!

Bernstol: Our list of options runs thin. If we don't act quickly, we will lose much more than just 3,000 men. For us to win this war, we need to launch a surprise attack and take down Imperial General Vatolla.

Verian knight: ...Do we have any chance of victory, sire?

part10lfk5g.jpg

Hmm...

part11nvkln.jpg

part12rfjh0.jpg

Zephyrus: This entire plan was designed to hunt down Bernstol, and now he's right where we want him. We can't miss this opportunity.

Vatolla: Your plans are flawless, Sir Zephyrus. He will not escape us.

Vatolla leaves, followed by Zephyrus's second in command bringing up a concern.

part13skk8j.jpg

Arcturus: No, not at all, sir. It's just...

Zephyrus: Just what?

Arcturus: I'm worried that you've become... exceedingly thorough about this coming battle, sir.

Zephyrus: Are you saying I shouldn't be?

Arcturus: Well, the commander of the League's entire western front was exiled to Berwick Island... And while his successor, Margrave Bernstol, is a brave warrior indeed, he can't hold a candle to you, sir. Our victory is all but assured. Why go so far as to prepare for every possible contingency?

Zephyrus [turning towards the windows]: Certainly, Bernstol is no different to a wild boar in a herd of rabbits. A quick stab of my spear could make short work of him, just as easily as it could any other of his men. However, Arcturus, boars are swift and take time to entrap... We can't afford to waste any time.

part14pkkao.jpg

Zephyrus: Our chance will be here at last, but only if we live through this. As it stands, we're just as replaceable as any other of the generals. If we're to survive the interregnum, we must gain as much favour as we can with the people of the Empire. After all, the army's loyalty will be the deciding factor between a peaceful transition and civil war.

So, the Emperor has no effective control, and the true power behind the Razite throne is elsewhere. This also has major implications for the war against the Berwick League.

Zephyrus: But if we seize victory here on the western front, we'll be untouchable. This is the only way we can protect my sister. Failure isn't an option.

Arcturus bows in respect, almost taken aback by the explanation.

Arcturus: ...! Yes, of course. You're exactly right, sir.

part153fko7.jpg

Arcturus: Forgive my foolishness, sir... I should never have questioned you.

Zephyrus: Don't worry about it, Arcturus. These times are trying on all of us. We've sacrificed everything we had to make it this far. My sister, most of all. Without her, I would have died a long time ago. I want her and her son to be able to live happily in peace. That is my only wish.

Arcturus: Sir Zephyrus...

part164ajm6.jpg

part1749ktk.jpg

part18okklr.jpg

part191ejgc.jpg

Faisal: What news do you bring? Have you come with information about Jacharam's latest scheme?

Rasputin: No, Your Highness, but you may be interested in the happenings on the Western Front...

Faisal: Hah, about Zephyrus, I presume? Don't worry about that upstart. Once Serenia falls, I'll have him banished to the Northern Lands.

Rasputin: That is why I am concerned... His reputation grows day by day. He is obviously trying to sway the hearts of his soldiers, and curry favour with the common citizens. By the time Serenia has fallen, he may have risen beyond our reach...

Faisal steps forward, raising his voice in irritation at this news.

part20u6k86.jpg

Faisal: Just because the Emperor took a liking to his sister, now Zephyrus is rising out of MY reach?! ...That damned old man had better hurry up and die soon, so I can clean up the mess he's caused. Once he's out of the picture, I can get rid of the rest with a flick of my finger.

Rasputin: He may have been a slave once, but Zephyrus has risen far beyond that, thanks to his talents... and now, his sister the Empress has given birth to a son... And... Well, there's the small matter that you aren't the Emperor's most direct of kin... So in recent days, you've no longer held the influence you once did...

Faisal: You think I don't know that?! Why else would I have chosen to ally myself with you and Urbanus? Please remind His Holiness that when I become Emperor, the Church will be given much more freedom. You may deal with the Verians as you see fit. Burn them, impale them, enslave them...

part21lrjbs.jpg

Prince Faisal is actually the Emperor's nephew, which is what's set up this future succession war. Zephyrus seems to be playing for the populist choice, while Faisal is apparently relying on brute force to retain control. The outcome of the overall conflict is no longer as straightforward as it first seemed...

Well Riddle said to try to not kill the priests, so maybe the bandit said "sod it, maybe the others will follow once that one is dead". And isn't Veria a God or did I missed something?

Veria is a goddess (and sometimes called "Mother Veria"), so using the male form "God" goes against the references and information so far.
Ah thanks, I missed that. And that would explain having female apostle and priests

Reading the next post, having bandits dressed as priests seems weird, except if they knew the knights were coming beforehand or if they are from a different desert clan.

They likely had advance warning from a scout.

I feel it could have been explained slightly better, it comes a little out of the blue (well, that's the point of an ambush, though.). Perhaps one of the bandit disguised as priests could have said to the effect of "We saw you coming, so we did that kunning trap".

That's in the 3 lines of dialogue when you send someone to talk to "Nagra". There was also this beforehand:

The objective to seize the temple doesn't change either. The bandits in that group can't move on the same turn that you trigger the ambush, so it will only screw over players that weren't paying attention.

Update 119: Chapter 8 - The Wooden Cavalry (Introduction, pt. 2)

I forgot to include this last time, it's a recurring theme that pops up during some chapter intros:

part1ufkht.jpg

part2hck4h.jpg

part32mjqz.jpg

part4tejcg.jpg

part52ejlx.jpg

Duke Roswick provides the briefing this time.

part6lhjtz.jpg

Roswick: I need you to assist in their retreat south to Fort Remagen. It hardly needs saying, but this is an urgent matter. If you are too late in getting there, Imperial troops will massacre the entire force. We will lose not only our men, but the bulk of our siege weaponry as well.

Reese: Yes, Your Grace. I will keep that in mind.

part78njiu.jpg

Upon returning to the office, Tianna informs us of the usual letter from Lynette.

part890kpv.jpg

I've also been neglecting to include the chapter-specific musical cues for letters, so have this one:

part9orjm8.jpg

part10hgjej.jpg

part113hk7s.jpg

part12vtkyc.jpg

part1396k5f.jpg

Sounds pretty grim. However, we have some fresh funding to work with:

part14uejht.jpg

I do like the juxtaposition of the wider politics and scope of the war with Reese's escort duty/firefighting. It shows that the conflict is much bigger than any one person, with tactical victories not necessarily translating into a change in the strategic situation. We also saw the contrast between the loyalty displayed by Zephyrus's subordinates and fellow commanders, against the apparent ease with which Bernstol's commanders are being bribed or otherwise persuaded to defect.

In the next part I'll be moving on to the citizen requests and new equipment. :)

Yeah, that's an interesting part of the game, with the strategic situation bringing new fights for the player. But the situation seems really hopeless for the league, it's what, the third or fourth commander that switch sides?

No, that thought bubble indicates he was waiting until your troops got closer to make a demonstration - the timing is after you've started advancing and attacking the clan. The "priests" have been standing there under watch the whole time. If the bandit did nothing, then it wouldn't prompt you to head over there. At least, that's how I saw it. There's still the smug dialogue from "Nagra" after the trap is sprung, as well.

You can totally ignore it to just seize the temple, and the reinforcements won't appear in that case. I wanted to show off as many events as possible, so I opted to trigger this one.

Anyway, I hope you're enjoying chapter 8 so far :)

Yeah, although the looming threat of civil war on the Imperial side is there as well. The subplot with Anastasia has some historical precedent: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empress_dowager

Although in this case, she's a concubine that happened to be favoured by the Emperor. I'm sure the "former slave rising to power" happened a few times in history as well. Zephyrus is basically the equivalent of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mamluk since his sister's position entailed better treatment than your average janissary.

Update 120: Chapter 8 - The Wooden Cavalry (Introduction, pt. 3)

I've updated to release candidate v1.0 of the translation patch, which has some minor script edits and corrections, as well as covering Chapter 15 and the endings. Some of the interface text has also been tidied up.

As usual, there are three citizen requests for this chapter:

part1bbk3n.jpg

part28wksm.jpg

Marshe: C'mon, Danton. Can't be too hard to find it, right?

Danton: These days it might be... The only other place I know of with ash trees is Kanne.

Marshe: Then I'll just take a few guys and cut one down myself. Easy.

Danton: Don't be stupid, Marshe! You know the Empire's gonna have the whole area taken in days! Ain't no tree or commission price that's worth going there for.

Marshe: Yeah, I figured you'd say that.

part3kukte.jpg

He interjects.

Daoud: Say, Danton...

Danton: Sir Daoud! Welcome, welcome. What can I do for you?

Daoud: Sounds like you're having trouble. What's so important about this kind of lumber you need?

Danton: Oh, it was a personal request from our carpenter here, Marshe. He needs it for a commission. We ordered some from our usual supplier, but they said they didn't have any they could sell us.

Marshe: Ash wood's usually used for things like tools and walking sticks, but it doesn't grow this far south. There's a good sized forest of it growing north of Kanne, but...

Daoud: Then there's no problem.

Marshe: What do you mean?

Daoud: I'll cut you down a small one and bring it back for you after our mission there.

Danton: You'd do that for us?!

Daoud: Sure. You said the forest is just north of the village?

Marshe: Y-Yeah... Thank you, Sir Daoud!

Over at the Kingfisher, a man is drowning himself in alcohol:

part4hnkad.jpg

Marybelle: Still, drinking your brains out won't help matters either.

Russel: If I'd known things would turn out like this, I'd have brought them here with me...

part5gyjsb.jpg

Marybelle: He's worried sick over his wife and daughter. Russel, explain things to him.

Russel: G-General Ward, was it? I'm begging you, you've got to save them! Please!

Ward: Calm yourself, my good man. Talk me through it slowly.

Russel: ...I know it's rude to ask this of you, but my wife and child are in danger.

Ward: What sort of danger? Where are they?

Marybelle: Back home in Kanne village. Russel here was just passing through Navaron to peddle his wares.

Ward: It's fortunate that you did, then, given the current predicament of your village...

Russel: No...The Imperials have already invaded the village?!

Ward: Not yet, as a matter of fact. As far as we know, it will still be a matter of days before they arrive.

Russel: Thank the goddess... But still, my family has stayed behind there...

Ward: The League troops stationed near there should be able to hold out for a short while; however...

Russel: Then I've got to hurry! I need to get them out!

Ward: It's too dangerous for civilians to go back. Who knows if the Empire has moved up their schedule?

Russel: But if I do nothing, my family will all be slaughtered!

Ward: This is a job for us soldiers. Regardless of what occurs, you must leave these matters in our hands.

Reese arrives and interrupts the discussion:

part6iej1v.jpg

The scene fades out for a short while as Ward explains the situation.

part7ackj6.jpg

Ward: As for you, you will stay here and wait quietly. Understood?

Russel: ...I understand. I'll entrust everything to you.

The third citizen request involves the Verian clergy:

part8trkg9.jpg

Yumil: It would be reassuring to simply hear any news about him at all...

part9p0kek.jpg

Ward: ...Is there something I can do for you, Sister Yumil?

Yumil: Perhaps... It regards a Verian Bishop. However, I hesitate to ask such a large favour of you...

Ward: I can see by your faces that it must be something serious. Please tell me about the circumstances.

Yumil: Father Lendel knows more of the specific details than I. I will let him tell you.

Lendel: I'm acquainted with the local bishop of Kanne village, Bishop Simas, from many years ago. He's a remarkable man with a strong moral compass and unwavering faith. We were discussing how he must be still at the village praying for the safety of the people...

Ward: I see, I see... and your request is that we go and rescue him?

Lendel: No, just hearing news of his current circumstances would be enough... Or perhaps, I should say that a rescue attempt would be against his wishes. It sounds strange to say, but persuading him to flee willingly would be an utter impossibility.

Ward: Hm... Well, I shall do what I can. When I arrive in Kanne, I shall pay him a visit for you.

Lendel: That will be more than enough. Thank you for your kindness, General Ward.

That wraps up the citizen requests:

part10iwkww.jpg

Two new events have popped up.

part11kckfv.jpg

Oh right, this guy...

part127xkyo.jpg

Lane: I would not dare look at any of them if it meant looking away from you, my fair lady.

Cecily: Ah...

Lane: Dearest Cecily, if I could see only one thing forevermore, it would be your beautiful, soft red hair! I must have you for my own!

Cecily: I-I am not worthy of such high praise, Baron Lane... I'm just a shopkeeper's daughter...

Lane: Perish the thought, milady! I see the true you that lies within, must as you see my true self. Lonng have I awaited the chance to find a companion who can see me for who I truly am. However, following disappointment after disappointment, I'd disavowed my futile quest for love... but then, I met you, Cecily...

Cecily: I-I...

Lane: If I cannot have your love, fair lady, the regret will haunt me for the rest of my pitiful days... I will not leave... Nay, I cannot leave this town without you at my side!

Cecily: Baron Lane...

Lane: Fairest Cecily, I beg of you... Please accept my--

part1348krh.jpg

Cecily: Ah! I-I'm sorry!

Lane turns around briefly to acknowledge Tianna, then continues his poetic speech towards Cecily.

Lane: ...O Cecily, please liberate me! Set me free from these chains of love you have placed upon me! I will continue to await your answer at our special place. Until then, adieu!

part148lksr.jpg

I can't tell if I should be laughing at how over the top Lane's poetry is, or pitying how naive Cecily seems to be. Maybe it should be both :P

The second event involves Sherpa:

part14_264k5z.jpg

Alex: Some Highlander woman. I told her you weren't around, but...

part14_3uqjh9.jpg

Sherpa: .....

This may well be related to that "traitor" business from a few chapters back. The man that confronted Sherpa at the tavern mentioned a "Chieftess Kay".

part15hhj1m.jpg

Sherpa: You and your knights are going on a mission to Kanne village, yeah? I want to come along.

Reese: May I ask why?

Sherpa: It's not much to speak of. Just a little personal business.

Reese: Very well. In fact, I was just thinking about hiring you for the mission.

Sherpa: Then luckily for you, I'll make this one free! See you on the battlefield.

This request of his means that Sherpa is now force-deployed for the mission, indicated by a star next to his name:

Finally decided to express my gratitude for your wonderful LP of this underrated game. Especially since this is the only LP on the net that has progressed this far in the game.

Earlier, you've listed the line differences between the english translation and the original japanese script. Will you still continue it?

Especially since his work on Tear Ring Saga has him delibrately changing (or as his critics say "censoring") the story contrary to the original story for his own personal bias.

Yes, I will go over the script later. There aren't many in Chapter 6 and 7 to my recollection. Besides, my Japanese is pretty bad so I'm not the best judge of tonal differences. I've already mentioned the chapter titles being adjusted to fit the UI, sometimes changes happen for technical reasons.

In the case of Chapter 8, the title's literal meaning is "The Trojan Corps" but this evokes something different to us in English than a ballistae unit, which is what the main mission is about. "The Wooden Cavalry" fits better in context so I can roll with that change. Visually they refer to the same outward appearance.

Some of the special weapon names had pretty nonsensical katakana representations attached to them, in these cases names were chosen based on appearance and function (such as Fauchard for a spear).

Especially since his work on Tear Ring Saga has him deliberately changing (or as his critics say "censoring") the story contrary to the original story for his own personal bias.

Aethin said he regretted the story changes he made there. https://old.reddit.com/r/fireemblem/comments/cfwqyt/to_the_fans_of_the_tearring_saga_games_an/

The TRS script was translated in one go without feedback from testers and the like. Besides, he was less experienced back then (which is evident by the occasionally odd grammar in the patch and Holmes spouting "Parents can eat shit" at one point).

The changes in the Berwick translation are very minor in comparison, the BWS patch has been tested and vetted chapter by chapter, and has multiple Japanese speakers involved. Aggro_Incarnate provided a lot of input on scenes involving Herman for example. I also persuaded Aethin to modify the script to be more faithful at a few points as well (a line in the Roswick-Enid post-chapter 6 scene comes to mind).

Anyway we could debate translation choices for hours, so I will stick to the pertinent points during the LP.

Update 121: Chapter 8 - The Wooden Cavalry (Enid's Journey)

Before I get to the new equipment and preparing for the mission, there is one more event to cover. First I'll make a quick stop at the temple library:

part1dljmu.jpg

Almuth: It is of no use to me, but perhaps you may want it... Please, help yourself.

part2ggkru.jpg

A pretty unremarkable knife, but it does give the wielder +6 magic when equipped. Since there aren't any knife users with actual magic spells, the practical effect is just +6 resistance.

Courtesy of the magic potion (or Liquid Magic as it's called now, inspired by the Vestaria Saga localization), Enid now has 5 magic.

part3bsjo1.jpg

If you recall, Enid's promotion is not level-based, but depends on an increase of 3 from her base magic stat of 2. Without further ado, let's see what happens:

part464jxx.jpg

part5spkm9.jpg

part6hrjnb.jpg

part7w1kze.jpg

Perceval: Don't say such stupid things... I couldn't use Thunder until I was already two years into my training! Enid, for you to be able to use Thunder and Fire after only a handful of months... It's completely unbelievable! You have far more promise as a mage than I ever did...

Enid: No way! I never could have done this without all your instruction, Percy!

Perceval: You've certainly worked hard as a student, but it's something more... Enid, you're unnaturally gifted. When it comes to fire magic, you've done in mere months what I haven't been able to do for six years... I wonder... There's something I want you to try.

Enid: What's that?

Perceval: Try using this orb. I'll teach you the chant for it.

Enid: Huh...? Sure, but why? Percy, you're acting strangely today...

Perceval: Please, just try it.

Enid: All right...

Perceval: Child of Veria, Pallas Leia... I call upon thee to destroy all evil with the power of thy flames.

Enid: "...with the power of thy flames." ...Got it.

part8rfk6x.jpg

part9phjpw.jpg

part10qvkyj.jpg

part11yqkg3.jpg

Enid: Aaaah!

Perceval stares at the charred trees in silence, apparently just as taken aback as Enid is.

Enid: Percy, what was that?! What did you just have me do?

Perceval: Pallas Leia... The magic my mother used.

Enid: This is... your mother's...?

Some time later, after the fire is put out...

part12ixk8b.jpg

As he does so, Percival seems to be wearing a deep look of concern.

Enid: W-What? Don't look at me like that! It was your idea!

Perceval: ...We're done for today, Enid. I'm sorry, but... I can't teach you anymore.

Enid: What? No, we can't be done! I've only just started to get the hang of it!

Perceval: I'm sorry, Enid, but I just can't. Keep that orb as my apology. You've already become an excellent mage and knight, like you wanted to be. As I said when we first started, you have to be born with a gift in order to be a mage. You are gifted, Enid... And I'm not.

part1364jjt.jpg

Perceval [turning and walking away]: Even so, I... No, I just can't... Goodbye, Enid. I wish you only the best.

Enid: No... But why?! Please, Percy! Please, come back...!

...

part14rak26.jpg

Almuth: Would you like to talk about it? I'm all ears.

Enid: Almuth...

Enid spends some time explaining the situation. We rejoin the conversation a short while later:

part156rjc6.jpg

Almuth: I may have an idea. You said that magic orb you used was called Pallas Leia, correct?

Enid: That's right. Percy said it was a memento from his mother.

Almuth: Pallas Leia was the magic used by Saint Leia, one of Goddess Veria's three Chosen Ones. According to the legend, that orb is a gift from the Goddess herself. It's been passed down in the royal family of Leia since ancient times.

Enid: Then that means... Percy is royalty?!

Almuth: I wonder... Since he is unable to use it himself, it is probable that he is not truly St. Leia's descendant.

Enid: What? But he said his mother could use it, so why shouldn't he?

Almuth: Why indeed...? The simplest explanation would be that he was adopted. However, that doesn't explain why you were able to succeed where he could not. Are you perhaps...?

Enid: No, that's not possible. I'm not even from Leia! My family is from the Lowlands and here in Narvia. I don't think there's anyone in my family tree who could be from the Kingdom of Leia...

Almuth: Then I am out of ideas. Regardless, think of how Perceval must feel about this development. He probably feels...

part16k3k2r.jpg

Almuth: Perhaps it would be better if this mystery remained unsolved...

Enid: No! I can't continue with my training if Percy won't even look at me...

Almuth: If I may object, Enid, you've already achieved what you set out to do. You've become a mage and a knight. You now have the opportunity to use your god-given power to help people! And, who knows? This issue between you and Perceval may simply resolve itself in time.

Enid: I can't just wait around! Percy is... he's very important to me! I can't leave things like they are!

Almuth: A-Ah, I see... Well, you must do what you feel is right, I suppose... I'm sorry, Enid. This is... a bit hard for me, as well.

Enid: Huh? What do you mean...?

Almuth: No, it's not important... Think nothing of it. I trust in your judgement, Enid. If you speak your heart to Perceval, I know you can make things right.

Enid: Thank you, Almuth. Thanks for helping me sort out my feelings like this. You've been such a kind friend to me these past few months.

Almuth: Why, thank you! I've enjoyed our chats as well. Good luck, my friend.

Enid: Thanks. Oh, and sorry for interrupting your studying again! See you around, Almuth!

part17m0jb7.jpg

part18ltkwr.jpg

That's +1 speed, +2 magic, +4 fire skill and +2 thunder. She's obtained Pallas Leia, of course, which I'll discuss shortly.

Tianna catches up with Almuth:

part19g3k9c.jpg

Tianna: What ever is the matter? You look so crestfallen.

Almuth: Oh, it's just a personal matter... You need not worry on my account.

Tianna: Hmm... If you say so. How goes the history research?

Almuth: I've completed my thesis regarding the history of the Berwick League. Although as it's written, I suppose it reads more like a heroic saga. Regardless, it's finished now.

Tianna: Impressive! My congratulations to you. Does that mean you are finished here at the temple library?

Almuth: I suppose so, for now. I'm going to miss coming to this place and reading every day... Thank you for all the assistance you've given me during the time I spent here.

Tianna: It was no trouble at all. So, what will you do now?

Almuth: Well, coming to this country has changed my perspective somewhat. I've decided to do some travelling. Simply writing isn't enough anymore... I need to see the world... to bear witness to all it has to offer!

part20p0jfs.jpg

Tianna: And I pray that someday you'll see your dreams realized, Almuth.

Almuth: Thank you, Lady Tianna. I will give it my very best. I pray that we may meet again. Until then, farewell...

Whilst in-game Pallas Leia isn't quite as awesome as the cutscene implied, it's still the most damaging spell available so far:

part212qkfd.jpg

Which is probably why the number of uses is low. I'll be saving it for some difficult targets later on.

As I mentioned back in my commentary on the chapter 6 intro, Enid was adopted into House Warrenheit - in the cutscene as she leaves, Roswick mentions her birth mother is named Ferianne. Both Ferianne and Enid were/are indeed Leian royalty, as proven by Enid's use of Pallas Leia. Perceval implies that he recognized Enid's appearance as similar to the woman who raised him.

There is also a subtext running throughout this promotion event. Percy can't seem to put it into words, but Enid says he is "important" to her, and that she can't leave things as they are. When she discusses this with Almuth, he makes a somewhat cryptic "This is hard for me as well" remark in passing. Later, Tianna observes that Almuth is "crestfallen", although he shrugs it off as unimportant. Reading between the lines, both Almuth and Percy have romantic feelings for Enid, but Almuth seems hurt by the news that Percy is the one Enid cares about. This is somewhat ironic given that Almuth comes across as the more mature, experienced and scholarly of the two teachers.

Since I was just asked about this, here is a discussion of the translation patch changes for the previous two chapters:

Chapter 6 - Duke Roswick's initial discussion with Enid has an additional line. "My hands are tied" was added in the introduction, to reinforce that Volcens' orders prevent him from sending troops to help his daughter Catherine. This came about after Aethin discussed the scene with beta testers. To a Japanese audience, it would be a given that he has to toe the line and Enid is the immature child acting out of her place. English speaking audiences have a cultural gap in this respect and found Roswick's line jarring, so I can see why the change came about. Either way, Roswick is supposed to be a sympathetic character, and it doesn't really change the overall tone of the scene much, so I'm ambivalent on it.

In the early versions of the translation patch, one of Roswick's post-mission lines about Enid's role in rebuilding the Lowlands was edited as Aethin felt it gave English players the wrong impression, as with the above change. I brought this up in beta testing; we settled on a compromise. The line would be fully reinstated, but with "child" replacing "woman". It is more consistent with the earlier Roswick-Enid conversation, and the fact that Catherine was ruling the Lowlands in the aftermath of Duke Warrenheit's death without any objections.

Chapter 7 - In the introduction, Quescria says "assassin sent by Pope Urbanus of Raze", rather than just "assassin" when referring to King Harmell's death. This was added from development notes on Shouzou Kaga's blog. As of RC v1.0, there is now a similar addition to chapter 3 clarifying the purge of the Shining Knights and why it happened.

In "Ancient Treasure", Riddle's death quote was changed slightly; his use of rude language is milder in Japanese than the English curse "bastards" in the patch (this may also be the case for a couple of the other bounty targets, but I'm no expert on Japanese equivalents).

As of RC v1.0, Dallas uses more strongly pejorative terms towards the prisoners ("I won't let those Berwick trash breathe another day" rather than "the prisoners will not be permitted to live") when speaking to his underling during "The Visitor". Again I'm ambivalent on this one; it's already obvious what he thinks from the pre-mission introduction, but it isn't strictly out of character either.

Thank you for now only answering my questions but also clearing up any misunderstandings.

Certain people who hated his script changes in TRS feared the worst for BS, so I'm quite glad that now everyone knows what to expect for the patch.

Update 122: Chapter 8 - The Wooden Cavalry (Equipment and preparations)

With 12 deployment slots available, there's room for getting some weaker characters up to scratch.

aa6dOP0.jpg

Before getting into that, I'll look at the new equipment for this chapter:

3SjYVsX.jpg

Unlike in many other games, the Greatsword in Berwick Saga is verging on impractical. It's also restricted to blade users (Sherpa, Volo, Faramir, Marcel and promoted Faye/Kramer). That said, B-class durability is good and it hits hard, so someone like Sherpa with an accuracy buff could do reasonably well with it.

nHZLe5Y.jpg

Throwing knives are a bit less accurate than their melee counterparts, but the extra range can come in handy, especially for counterattacks.

ZXqgJf1.jpg

The Levin sword (levin being an archaic word for thunder) got hit with the nerf stick in comparison to its TRS incarnation. It's somewhat understandable given how resistance is extremely low in general, but the accuracy makes it difficult to justify using over something like the infernal edge. Or pure magic, if the enemy is physically bulky.

BbqF31P.jpg

Greatshields live up to their name, providing a whopping 19 defence at the cost of extremely high weight. If you're intent on deploying Marcel a lot, it could come in useful.

saZblnD.jpg

Paladin shields, as their name implies, are locked to that class (Reese can also use them upon promotion). The +3 magic doesn't stack with magic weapons, it's really just +3 resistance.

0lfKZ0Q.jpg

Like the other "killer" type weapons, the spear variant adds 18% crit. It's otherwise virtually identical to the iron spear, so the cost premium isn't really worth it.

qEmFovV.jpg

Partisan, or Halberd if you prefer, is a powerful but very unwieldy polearm. For the cost it really should be more accurate, but I'll chalk that up to a balancing oversight. I suppose with an experienced paladin, and a couple of accuracy buffs (Reese's commander + Kingfisher) it could be situationally viable.

rrZsk7F.jpg

Contrary to the sword counterpart, Greataxes aren't necessarily as awkward to employ as the stats suggest. Dean has a built-in hitrate improvement (desperation) that also allows him to attack twice, and gains axe skill quickly. The greataxe's price is much lower as well. Nonetheless, the tradeoffs involved mean you will often have more efficient options for a given situation.

YhjW1Yc.jpg

Next up is the Greatbow. This is more interesting than the previous high-damage/low accuracy weapons, because it's easier to improve bow hitrates. The aim skill can offset the 40% base hit chance significantly, and special arrows can improve that further. On the other hand, you could also be boosting an accurate bow with more damaging arrows, which would be a bit cheaper. There is no clear answer in every case.

iE90UXw.jpg

Just as in real life, the Arbalest here is a supersized crossbow. Most of what I said about the greatbow applies here, although the damage and weight are significantly higher. If you need one high damage shot, this is the ticket.

lzHxIZN.jpg

Mithril arrows put out the most damage at only a modest cost premium. The drawback is that fewer are available to purchase in total over the course of the campaign.

There are two new crafting materials in stock at the atelier:

5TriJ5f.jpg

For now, I won't be making any new items or weapons, so I'll move on to deployment. Reese, Ward, Daoud and Sherpa are either forced or needed for citizen requests; I'll hire Sylvis (2350), Dean (1710) and Ruby (1200) since I want to speed up their recruitment. Izerna and Czene will provide the usual utility skills, Elbert can come along since he's close to promotion, and Enid to provide magic damage.

After that, my frugal approach means I still have about 30,000 left to spend on equipment. Ruby gets an iron spear and pilums for training; a stack of verutums for Elbert; a spare iron axe for Dean; and a composite bow + some bronze arrows for Sherlock. I also buy a replacement thin horse since Sherlock's one died last chapter.

usmp3TU.jpg

At the Kingfisher, there are some good options on the menu:

Jlb6ZHK.jpg

The rabbit stew gives +2hp, +3 speed and the Vantage skill to characters who like it, which includes Ruby:

jaJXdC9.jpg

Ward's horse is looking worse for wear, I buy the Sinon Salad to take care of that. Finally, the crab provides a hitrate boost - Reese, Czene, Sherlock and Elbert can take that. I left one seat free, since I want to give Kramer a buff later in this chapter.

After some re-arranging of existing equipment, the team is ready:

H0ILLKf.jpg

I threw some extra swords to Reese since the longsword and killing edge are likely to break soon. Given the hitrate buff, he should fare well without needing Gram.

amlGb7A.jpg

Ward needs to come along for the citizen request, so I may as well give him some decent gear. The "quality sword" was renamed altium sword in v1.0 (a name borrowed from Vestaria Saga).

BfAsCww.jpg

I'm only intending for Sherpa to weaken enemies, so a shortsword should be enough for now.

uechOHr.jpg

As usual, Izerna takes the full array of light magic.

9uxfPoo.jpg

Elbert is going to be drawing a lot of attention with provoke, so I loaded him up with as many shields and spears\swords as I could spare.

KUw5SkD.jpg

Czene will be tasked with the usual thief specialisms like searching buildings; I'll also try to get some kills to for that level 10 promotion.

FlkwMcm.jpg

Sherlock's a bit underlevelled for the composite bow, so I'm starting him with the longbow. One or two kills should be enough to switch. His multishot skills consume a lot of arrows, which is why his bag is half-full.

S58NXA6.jpg

The prototype shield will speed up Ruby's skill increase, and vantage will give her an edge in melee to interrupt enemy attacks.

qJo4O06.jpg

Enid can help take care of bulky enemies with shields. Since I want to preserve Pallas Leia uses, the basic fire spell is what she'll equip here.

qyGmPgK.jpg

As he can utilize medium shields, I passed a spare one to Daoud. I'll have him tank when he's not busy chopping ash trees.

vT4sC0x.jpg

I haven't been keeping exact count, but it should be possible to recruit Dean this chapter if I deploy him in a couple more missions. He's almost capped axe skill (he'll need to promote to raise it above 40).

dWyaT37.jpg

Last but not least, Sylvis will provide additional ranged firepower. She's already very accurate, so she's equipped with the better bows I have.

Update 123: Chapter 8 - The Wooden Cavalry (part 1)

The Sinon Knights are stationed in several of the houses at Kanne. There is a church, shop and a few searchable buildings.

CiVlyjQ.jpg

Imperial troops have already arrived to the west...

XDJ67TN.jpg

...and the east as well.

GArz6ND.jpg

The escape point is to the south, with the civilians already on their way there.

djvflJl.jpg

To the southwest is another possible attack route:

iXzLL0n.jpg

In the north is a forest, and a conspicuous looking tree (probably the one Daoud needs to chop down).

WHdg7Ve.jpg

After the usual repositioning, it's time to start the mission.

n7ML0Mn.jpg

Ward: Hm, I wonder...

A familiar face appears.

f1Qqjmo.jpg

Burroughs: Oh hey, you're that Reese guy. I'm Burroughs. Nice to meet you.

Reese: You're a ballistician, aren't you? Why are you still here after General Rosecchar ordered a retreat?

Burroughs: As long as we're here, the villagers are still protected. Orders or none, I'm not gonna just abandon them and run away. I figured we'd stick around until they evacuate, and then we'd have no problem following the orders.

Reese: I appreciate the sentiment, but you won't be going anywhere fast with your ballistae. If you don't leave immediately, the enemy will catch you. Therefore, I order you again: Retreat immediately.

kGiirJW.jpg

Soldier: We anticipate that the main bulk of their forces will not be far behind.

Ward: Thank you, soldier. Lord Reese, our schedule is tight, but I think we have enough time to help these ballisticians for a little while.

Burroughs: You don't need to worry about us. We're nobody important. We agreed to stay behind because we don't have any family or loved ones waiting for us back home. ...Well, I say that, but it's not like I'm planning on dying here, either.

Reese: ...I understand. We'll help you and the villagers for as long as we can before we retreat. But our primary goal here is still to get you ballisticians back to Fort Remagen, or else it may fall. Understood, Burroughs? Those are your orders.

Burroughs: I got it, Lord Reese. I'll hit 'em with a few good shots, and then I'll get going.

0umNF5w.jpg

A couple of things here to note: The ballistae can only move 2 hexes per turn, and getting all of them to safety is worth extra tactics points.

XAirZqF.jpg

Burroughs is of course a recruitable character, assuming he survives this battle that is. Ballistae are very cumbersome, so he cannot dodge attacks, and he's very vulnerable to enemies that get inside the minimum range.

iBvBMFe.jpg

Burroughs' skillset does help mitigate one weakness, boosting movement back up to 3. While deploying him is very situational, having battle cry will avoid costly missed shots. He also learns the Aim skill at level 7.

Czene equips her best knife, then searches the nearby house. After fighting off a thief, she finds some gold stashed in it.

UoDYtZk.jpg

UWzCBgK.jpg

Ruby interrupts an attacker in the east with vantage, as the ballistae open fire. Ward heads over to the church.

Burroughs easily cuts down an enemy soldier:

dmZBJKE.jpg

Sylvis and Ruby take out a second.

cCR2P9l.jpg

Sherpa joins them at the eastern edge of the village.

y09d2qg.jpg

Elbert and Dean move in to intercept the western enemy force.

W6A89TQ.jpg

A nice level-up too.

IKOjGmG.jpg

Russel's wife is nearby, but there's no sign of his daughter. I'll be sending Reese to talk to the former soon.

GRDBy0G.jpg

On turn 2, Reese joins the melee. Dean claims another kill with his broadaxe:

Spj5NgS.jpg

A ballista shot takes care of the third spearman.

kGf7Ir8.jpg

Ruby's spear throw misses, so Burroughs gets this one.

2ANe2eP.jpg

Ward enters the church, and finds Bishop Simas who is preoccupied with prayer:

CEr5gYV.jpg

Ward: Bishop Simas?

Simas: .....

Ward: Bishop!

Simas: ...As you can see, I am praying. I do not know who you are, but please leave me in peace.

Ward: We are the Knights of Sinon. Please run while you can, Bishop. Imperial soldiers are approaching fast.

Simas: Why do you think I am praying? I wish for the people of this village to escape the coming destruction.

Ward: ...How long will this prayer take?

Simas: A little while longer.

Ward: Very well. I suppose I will just wait... (I doubt he would be convinced even if I did argue with him...)

D1N99yD.jpg

The first civilian NPC makes it to safety.

Uq7g92s.jpg

I have Daoud keep using battle cry. Czene visits the shop, and finds a man asking for assistance:

dHbvljP.jpg

Morrison: Could you give this to a man named Bluck at the bowyer's shop in Navaron, when you get back? He'll understand once he gets it. Please, help me out here.

vQWwjDn.jpg

If I recall correctly, this counts as another citizen request.

The shop has two crafting materials available, so I buy both:

D3PkMSv.jpg

Next turn, more Imperial soldiers arrive. Bishop Simas also grumbles a complaint.

KtZh6c6.jpg

Reese heads over to catch up with Martha. Sherpa intercepts a crossbow attack on Sylvis:

AGpeg95.jpg

Czene searches another house, finding just some gold this time.
