Strap Yourselves In
Obviously this is something they couldn't do with the technology available at the time, but it would be nice to be able to rotate the camera during the traps. Sometimes it's harder than hell to see what's actually going on.

As for the waterfall, if I remember right, later in this chapter is the part where you tell Cora "Just stay alive! No matter what occurs. I will find you!" Or maybe that was The Last of the Mohicans, I can't remember.

As you get farther into it, there's more situations where you're fighting large numbers of enemies and then how you employ Owyn becomes more complicated. I try to have him deliver a devastating spell against multiple enemies in the first round because they're probably gonna engage him in melee by the second round. Hopefully by then he's got enough experience with the staff by then that he can at least put up a fight. When there's a badly wounded fleeing enemy, I usually let Owyn go after him to build up his melee skill for when he's going to need it.

Sic semper tyrannis.
Finally had time to post this.

We head back to the road an remember the two points of interest off the road on the other side. They turn out to be this.

i-JDwvftw-M.png

The barn is basic.

i-jtNmvDQ-M.png

The house is interesting. These spiders sound like the enemies we saw in the caves below Sarth.

i-C84Kvdg-M.png

We check the spyglass again and there's even more stuff behind the house. This area is really open. Its tough to explore it all.

i-VFZtJQq-M.png

As we move towards the southwest point of interest we almost get shot!

i-9scZ99N-M.png

It's kinda strange how some events take over the entire screen and some are only in the main window. There's not that much text here, but it gets split across 3 slides.

i-6cbDgtd-M.png

Apparently there's some keep ruins around here. With these guards watching it - I double the Nighthawks would use it as a base.

i-mhgtvXz-M.png

We finally reach the south west interest point.

i-6G7Cxbk-M.png

Why would someone use a shovel to bury another shovel???

i-bN5hW5w-M.png

We move north a bit and see some strange rocks - which causes Owyn to yell out!

i-TmZ4G4S-M.png

James is hoping Owyn didn't just say what he thinks he said.

i-tT6tCZZ-M.png

Oh wow. Well the guards are still around - so I guess whatever happened to the keep did not kill all the inhabitants. Perhaps Owyn's uncle still lives.

i-66sbGTk-M.png

Normally that WOULD be the most likely explanation, but the guard did just say something about ruins of the keep.

i-XFvJkdF-M.png

It's confusing that the next town's name also ends with the word Keep.

i-NQrSSVV-M.png

There are those rocks... seems like the trees are already growing where the keep would have been. Just how long ago did Owyn last come visiting his uncle?

i-Sm8R3t3-M.png

The other point of interest seems to be a house in the woods. This whole are is strange with random farms off the road in the forest. Seems like the keep was off the road too.

i-m87HQcT-M.png

But... what DID happen to the keep?

i-3s8ZJkm-M.png

Whatever it is - apparently herbs are more important.

i-jhdkrkT-M.png

Decent prices, mediocre selection.

i-wdcjgKP-M.png

As we meander north-north east: the spyglass reveals a cache to the north west.

i-SxWxNc6-M.png

It seems to be guarded by a trap.

i-C9dMV2R-M.png

Hard to tell what's happening, but seems like we need to get the blockers out of the way and proceed between the two traps.

i-8Jh3CBN-M.png

I decide to move my characters to see what's in front of them. Good idea it turns out!

i-TfD2Hxb-M.png

So James pushes the clear blocker diagonally in front of the previously hidden gun and that allows Gorath to proceed between the two staves.

i-9NcGhwq-M.png

It's word locks.

The options for this one are:

TIWE
SREY
WHIT
OADS

i-GGV2kbS-M.png

I could not solve this one.

The options are:

THTATW
SRAUUY
WEILSS
AOVDOE

i-B9C6c6W-M.png

The options for the last one are:

RARPE
WHGMD
EITEB
SLCON

i-vQ2F2BJ-M.png

Answers and loot from the two I got:

Not sure why they needed to include the wine bit - not like teeth are necessary for that.

i-cPPwcRz-M.png

Good stuff in there though.

i-rrCVjFF-M.png

I didn't know wagons had tongues, or ran, stumbled upon the answer randomly rolling the dials.

i-BXgNQJf-M.png

Unfortunately the reward is somewhat useless.

i-8sp5qz6-M.png

The point of interest near the road turned out to be a house. With a well! Remembering the note about knight's chess piece being in the well - we give it a try and we find...

i-zsqw7Mx-M.png

The house turns out to be a sparsely populated inn.

i-QBkrPZ4-M.png

Huh, a first working gambler. We don't gamble though.

i-h3GZ5sg-M.png

Quite a princely sum for playing the lute here though!

i-MbQK5mh-M.png

I guess this is why - the rest here is expensive.

i-mC54VXh-M.png

Back on the west side of the road we notice more goodies.

i-whjSqFg-M.png

Huh, when it rains these stumps - it pours!

i-mgMbZhg-M.png

Oh my! Seems someone is using them as a bank!

i-ZSQr6Nh-M.png

This is making me understand why those guys with metal detectors comb the beaches...

i-DCt8wVx-M.png

Oh, I expected more gold.

i-hv5rkP9-M.png

Yay!

i-TCgKJsL-M.png

These don't mix, kinda like you can't combine a whetstone with 1 charge with a whetstone with 19 charges.

i-WXPbZGL-M.png

We notice another point of interest to the east - but it seems to be guarded by trolls.

i-3wg9CsX-M.png

I decide to buff up - don't want another super long fight with them since they're so tough. This is Killian's Root Oil.

i-frtzRMj-M.png

Blue drop huh?

i-JsVJ442-M.png

Gorath tries the that priest cloth instead. Guess we'll find out which 'Enhanced' is better. I also buffed up both of their's strength.

i-vNpsJbV-M.png

Yay sneaking!

i-b9mbwgv-M.png

James hits for 29. Not bad, but I expected more.

i-CRXHbvf-M.png

Owyn launches a fully charged Frost Bolt which... misses. That's expensive.

i-H9gb8dD-M.png

Gorath hits for 55. Looks like his blessing is better.

i-VZMVTkD-M.png

James is parried. Gets hit for 16 in return.

i-tvXSXWR-M.png

Gorath hits for 72 with a swing. First Troll goes down.

i-spHkN6p-M.png

James hits for 28.

i-dVnK5GJ-M.png

Gorath hits for 70 with a swing through parry.

i-QCgC53H-M.png

James hits for 28 again. Gets hit for 16 right back.

i-MB2ck8p-M.png

I charge with Owyn, he hits for 6.

i-QnHD6tW-M.png

Gorath finishes second Troll with a thrust through parry for 54.

i-cRHWBFm-M.png

James misses. Gets hit for 16 again.

i-pK7NZwP-M.png

He hits for 29. Another troll hits him for 12.

i-mdPzHBk-M.png

Owyn has backed off so shoots a frost bolt for 5 hp at the healthier troll in order to give James time to rest up. Instead... James gets hit for 10 and gets frozen.

i-Fv8mX25-M.png

One of the trolls runs - Gorath hits the other one for 54.

i-p63T46W-M.png

Owyn gives 20 hp to James via Gift of Sung spell.

i-42tn9FN-M.png

Gorath finishes one of the trolls with a hit for 58. Last troll runs off and the fight is over.

i-djM2Hzr-M.png

James's strength is increased. But its hard to tell what it actually is. He's a little bit below max health and is under the effect of a strength potion.

i-NB9tWK2-M.png

The last point of interest turned out to be a ... shop. In the middle off the woods - off the road.

i-KzHK39G-M.png

Ah. Someone did mention there was a guy selling magics somewhere north of Romney.

i-LCDv6dC-M.png

Hmmm, what is this stuff?

i-Dn7bnsg-M.png

I... think this might improve lockpicking? Or maybe it casts Nightfingers - though we've never seen that spell being available to be cast.

i-zFgN8Cf-M.png

Sounds like this casts some kind of offensive spell.

i-pBzbG7P-M.png

We haven't seen a wyvern - but this likely summons one.

i-L5mHvXd-M.png

Sounds like something that trains Casting accuracy.

i-z8c9jJr-M.png

The rest is spells. Here are the ones we have not seen yet. Why are there so many spells against Black Slayers when we're yet to see them?

i-9bNxpcq-M.png

I think this works like Eyes of Ishap.

i-DzfdLM7-M.png

Not sure what this does, but it costs 800 gold!

i-hxrMGfP-M.png

We haggle down the book and buy it.

i-c9tJzHJ-M.png

Hopefully Owyn got at least some of it...

i-j5KKSJr-M.png

Yes he did! Hopefully his accuracy will not be as bad as it was in the last two fights.

i-tKcbmfK-M.png

Let me know if you guys solve the last chest and if you want me to try out the 800 gold spell!

Moving on!

I end up buying all 3 of the spells I did not have, just to have a full spell book. Here's the only non-combat one.

i-9sp5zSR-M.png

We also go open the chest we could not earlier. Thanks CappenVarra!

i-Bmvp6pr-M.png

The gold is really helpful as we're almost out.

i-G9bWD53-M.png

Soon after we move on from the open area there appears to be two more caches near the road.

i-WkNw3MP-M.png

They're chests. This one is a word lock. It's options are:

SAMT
WILS
PROL
ETUE

Answer and Loot:

Might have had trouble with this one if it had more letters.

i-vqxVgcj-M.png

That's... not particularly useful.

i-6rwkBqq-M.png

Second chest is just plain unlocked and has quite the cache.

i-RqzkpQc-M.png

The note is... interesting. Isn't that Owyn's uncle? And... Navon sounds familiar - think the Ruski chessplaying innkeeper mentioned him. Lets hope we learn more of what's happening here.

i-pBM5Ssr-M.png

We see a town in the distance. Must be Cavall's Keep. Finally!

i-dMMJR4j-M.png

Yup!

i-hbPpHKw-M.png

We go in.

i-HnbTFmK-M.png

Looks like a cute town. We go selling first.

i-cZHf2pr-M.png

Finally a weapon's shop, we've acquired a few surplus high quality items .

i-WTZxkzQ-M.png

Think this is first time we've seen a Rapier for sale. Unfortunately this guy does not buy Tsurani crossbows of which we have 2 for sale.

i-pt6vBJ9-M.png

He does buy the extra Dwarf Plate armor though.

i-qN92Cvt-M.png

We now know why the Oilcloth is so expensive. It was doubling Gorath's damage.

i-vVb2KnC-M.png

The Dwarf armor does not sell for nearly as much as I had hoped.

i-hDJPfZM-M.png

We remember that note about the knight chesspiece in the well - so we take a look.

i-9g9dkx4-M.png

Ah, this makes sense. We do not stoop to the level of picking these up.

i-BSxTHbN-M.png

Next: the Inn.

i-nrv5VMn-M.png

The guy on the left is just a gambler.

i-nrv5VMn-M.png

The large lady to his right appears to be the tavern keeper.

i-bNb73mT-M.png

That's a man?

i-qGjdbHZ-M.png

Tsk, tsk. The tavernkeeper should not be bringing his problems onto his customers. Unless its an rpg I guess, if so this would be a perfect time for kill the rats in the basement quest.

i-hPjhKLV-M.png

Don't think I'd be gaining the right kind of levels from THAT side quest.

i-vcnZN2v-M.png

Oooo, look at Owyn the wordsmith.

i-SP8BLHz-M.png

Cooking is a basic-necessary skill. My wife made me get over my aversion to it a few months back and... I kinda enjoy it now - in correct circumstances.

i-VrQkhQg-M.png

Dense as Thunderhell?

i-gzhZsSc-M.png

I guess we'll open with the big one.

i-K4KDLcG-M.png

They dress in black. Have birds on their chest?

i-MbnB6sF-M.png

That sounds like a good business practice. Didn't seem to stop them in Romney though.

i-FQqp4pJ-M.png

Maybe its just how it looks on paper, but that does not seem convincing to me at all.

i-6gGwWT7-M.png

Pub in Prank Stone? I don't remember any criminals there... Maybe he's making an allusion to that Pub owner being a crook?

i-TNxrJx6-M.png

OK, is Duck on the menu?

i-xG4XFbd-M.png

Owyn wonders this too.

i-684QLKR-M.png

Damn, that does sound good. Guess this is how he ended up this large.

i-87mZMLL-M.png

Man, why can't you guys spend an hour relaxing with some good dinner?

i-QQVxTLN-M.png

That sounds kinda expensive.

i-vKmHbPx-M.png

So we say no. Perhaps we'll change our minds later.

i-FxJGC2Z-M.png

Fair enough.

i-3XCCbSx-M.png

We ask about the Lodging. Guess we have no time for dinner, but do have time for naps.

i-Wgpkgnm-M.png

Hmmm... Popular place I guess.

i-Xj2hHMx-M.png

Seems like we do at every inn we stay in.

i-j8hdSfb-M.png

Bedrolls under the night sky sound more comfortable than that.

i-DtL4njM-M.png

No other topics - so we say goodbye.

i-DDjCjRW-M.png

This guy is growing on me.

i-FMVR6D7-M.png

The full house means we get paid quite a bit.

i-N3z2Htr-M.png

There are two houses we can explore in this town.

i-HLdZJng-M.png

First one appears useless.

i-FNPwVh5-M.png

So we check the bigger one.

i-zSfJj2n-M.png

Oh! We're finally hit something here.

i-WhkLF5P-M.png

Hmmm, mild hostility?

i-7bRDd2R-M.png

Clearly he's NOT happy to see Owyn. Owyn has not mentioned any trouble with his uncle. What's going on?

i-XT7fbK8-M.png

James is immediately down to business.

i-NHvcnq5-M.png

Wow. This guy is a piece of work.

i-Tb5x7xX-M.png

Oh SNAP!

i-4wVxgkZ-M.png

Sounds like the priests didn't heed his request. Not surprised.

i-thVk6cT-M.png

Well, that's all that took to make the Count relearn some manners.

i-MKSKfMj-M.png

Hmmmm, maybe it was the loss of his keep that got his temper riled up? But it must have been a while ago..

i-mLPc5RW-M.png

Yes, lets hear it from the horse's mouth.

i-d57Shrj-M.png

Guess, the invocation of the prince also made this guy remember that Owyn's his nephew and should be treated as such.

i-F5BxDMh-M.png

Must have been a wooden keep.

i-fW8KrfN-M.png

That does actually sound terrible. Doubt they have insurance companies covering the cost of keeps in the Kingdom.

i-5wbX2R3-M.png

Who exactly is Ugyne? And... tunnel?

i-vKpvkMQ-M.png

Hmmm, yes - it does seem un-necessary.

i-zNjmS2g-M.png

Understandable, lets move on.

i-kVQ2MqN-M.png

I like the fact that the game keeps track of the notes we read without us having to carry them in the inventory to trigger conversation topics.

i-gk9FW4q-M.png

I bet the Count is still wondering what grave matter we have to discuss with him.

i-ZBtZgzm-M.png

OK. So Ugyne must be Owyn's cousin. And I guess this provides some explanation as to Count's request to the High Priest.

i-FDHkCbp-M.png

Heh, James has a talent for interrogation.

i-6j6G7mh-M.png

You must have realized your petition would raise a few eyebrows and the info might get out count...

i-Fjx9kc9-M.png

Now I feel a little guilty for pocketing the tithe.

i-Z5TWM4R-M.png

Hmmmm, this is starting to be suspicious. Tunnels can be used as hide outs, possibly for... the guild of death?

i-t6375tf-M.png

Hmmmm, so his wife burned down with the keep? Or did she die earlier?

i-zPqgpGS-M.png

What is this topic?

i-FgxCrV6-M.png

Oh, sounds like it might be one of those skill up for money ones.

i-Zz8j2Sm-M.png

Who's Neville?

i-msWQJ3X-M.png

James is once again the most practical member of the party.

i-gLTBdcF-M.png

That seems like a long time for a Count to spend in the military. Guess that was before he inherited the title.

i-wWjqcvR-M.png

I suppose challenges like this are sometimes the way to get someone with an ego to do something.

i-45SvtQS-M.png

Kinda expensive. But passing up on skill ups is not what we do.

i-7JDjd2f-M.png

Let's see what you've got Count!

i-DKqCSDC-M.png

The wager is on!

i-gxdCc2t-M.png

I guess that's an interesting distinction showing a difference in intermediate and advanced skill in Assessment.

i-LgPCKFC-M.png

Well, it does seem like James learned some things.

i-W3DSJbr-M.png

There's nothing more with the Count, but it seems like talking to him opened a new topic with Peter.

i-Qjf9kQt-M.png

Heh, imagine having a count move in next door.

i-7sD3QL2-M.png

Who else is in the family? Wife is dead. Neville I guess?

i-JxksqSN-M.png

I guess James does consider Count a possible suspect.

i-kzVmcnX-M.png

Does not seem like our man. Or at least he covers his tracks well.

i-ggWcShq-M.png

We leave town and check our the results of our training.

i-28KTPVC-M.png

Its funny how Owyn is still a better fighter than James. If only the staves did more damage.

i-s497jtc-M.png

When Owyn plays the lute at the inns, James and Gorath get slightly better at Barding.

i-xTwrVJs-M.png

As we leave town we encounter someone.

i-s5XXXzn-M.png

What's strange about this time?

i-8R8sMQz-M.png

Tis true, we've met a lot of such sorts.

i-FBcThZg-M.png

Heh, she's got spirit.

i-X54LSpw-M.png

Seemed like he was, until he heard the Prince's name.

i-6j62zVm-M.png

Wow, imaging how much he was seething during our conversation then.

i-HdD53sX-M.png

Hmmm? With the Priests of Kahooli maybe? But was that really a financial arrangement?

i-s5Sv8S8-M.png

Would be nice to know.

i-DZTFt9c-M.png

Nobles for you. Always so preoccupied with their family nonsense.

i-SpPhTtm-M.png

I guess lets start with the small talk before the heavier topics.

i-z8bjttk-M.png

It does sound like they're swarming over her.

i-MXrhFHC-M.png

Already has a daughter. Life of a noblewoman is a life with a large lack of choices.

i-pThFgdD-M.png

Guess that would be that Navon dude.

i-Q4BX8mg-M.png

A businessman that has time for History and chess?

i-NTfW7hD-M.png

Ok, time to talk about the heavy stuff.

i-5N9KDC9-M.png

I guess I can understand Count's point.

i-bs92mv4-M.png

Ummmm... Not in my experience. Well maybe if the history is really interesting for some reason.

i-hv6mFrk-M.png

Oh. Neville is dead too? This family has been through a lot.

i-WjcGN3G-M.png

This girl is great for backstory info so far.

i-BqDWrCd-M.png

What? Did he lose some really expensive wine or something? Seems silly to worry about wine cellar when the whole damned keep burned down.

i-TtKwnKd-M.png

Why are all these dead family members being brought up?

i-P3sS79T-M.png

Losing kids is terrible with a capital T. Guess the Count is made of stern stuff.

i-PD5NdN6-M.png

Is that some nearby town? Why keep a wine cellar in some other town?

i-49PVC3x-M.png

Owyn has the same question.

i-wJHj73H-M.png

Oh. Those tunnels again. So he went down into the cellar in the tunnels... Oh. The cellar.

i-CNVCqCN-M.png

That's some crazy bad luck... Of all the times to collapse.

i-DZzGJ9P-M.png

That sounds like a bad way to go, unless the collapse fell on top of him and killed him instantly.

i-3K6Xg9M-M.png

Lets carry on with the topic before switching to Murder.

i-6nnmpzF-M.png

How much more of a backstory can this family have?

i-L9zRjhj-M.png

Wait? Spyglass???

i-kWcxvT8-M.png

Why does that topic say Sword instead of Spyglass???

i-2wv5g3z-M.png

Is that a named sword? I suppose we already have one of those.

i-zGQHNCP-M.png

Fourteen and already married.

i-TXwwJzf-M.png

Uh... wha? And multiple children at fourteen?

i-5qbRCBv-M.png

Ummmm. Sounds like payback for statutory rape for the Lord, but the children?

i-TBnQTqF-M.png

Think such a terrible thing would be melted down after that.

i-fsgrcvB-M.png

Not sure why this sword is handled so gingerly. Cursed artifacts should be destroyed.

i-b5VL2WG-M.png

Seems like this sword is world famous or something.

i-5SVcCJ5-M.png

Lets hope the bit about 14 year old repeat mother was an exaggeration then.

i-L93XKk5-M.png

Ok, Murder it is. Can't be worse than the story of the sword.

i-btZZf7P-M.png

Yeah, your cousin is the equivalent of a Fed now, what do you think about that?

i-Hsq4njR-M.png

It does seem like this is the right direction.

i-vcbZGgJ-M.png

I mean... we know a little more now.

i-MPqjM45-M.png

Yay! Finally these two connect the dots.

i-gD3Jp8c-M.png

Hmmm... I don't recall one either.

i-JgjhxCw-M.png

Is this family like a collector of magical artifacts?

i-8vPGZWm-M.png

About the same time? And the body was never found? Seems like there's more to this story.

i-x8sn7ZH-M.png

That's not really how our spyglass works.

i-nXBkT3D-M.png

Maybe Neville found out something terrible about his father and the Count killed him?

i-BkKKXq6-M.png

We're out of topics with her. The Count has nothing new to say, but Peter has a few new topics.

i-NFh6M4F-M.png

I guess Neville was older than Owyn.

i-xVP6CLL-M.png

Little tot? But he was getting a Keg?

i-tfdhffs-M.png

Yes, what now?

i-6s32Twj-M.png

Sounds like just being cheap. No reason to build a room to collapse as you can't predict when it will.

i-xGVJ47K-M.png

Yeah. A close death makes us all reconsider our actions.

i-BXN3bKT-M.png

Now Navon.

i-qpkFhp3-M.png

Navon does seem to have a lot of name connections to what happened. Neville and Navon even seem similar.

i-RkwMqfD-M.png

Maybe Neville is alive and posing as Navon for some reason? But then how would the Count and Ugyne not recognize him?

i-wQjDx9v-M.png

Yeah, how come we haven't met him yet?

i-BC745dq-M.png

Cause he's further to the north.

i-ZRtF4rC-M.png

Well. Seems like all threads lead north - to Kenting Rush.

Short session tonight.

We get on the road north and quickly run into an ambush.

i-JbN6THs-M.png

Gorath gets hit for something.
James misses.

i-qttBWSS-M.png

Once Owyn's turn arrives we check out some of the new spells.

i-wsSQPpG-M.png

I don't remember this spell at all. Will have to try it out later.

i-mxtCxBH-M.png

For now we use the other spell.

i-vzjdRqG-M.png

Owyn hits with Bane of Black Slayers - 75 damage is enough to put down our first black slayer - the bloody nighthawk in the back.

i-WMN4H5K-M.png

Gorath's swing hits for 56.

i-DB6K5Dg-M.png

James hits for 33.

i-NC7Zjw9-M.png

Owyn hits a Black Hawk with a Frost Bolt (5hp) - no damage but he's frozen.
Gorath finishes a Night Hawk with a thrust for 47.

i-Thbzq53-M.png

James's rapier strike finds its way through a parry - 36 damage is enough to kill the second Night Hawk.

i-qHFqFL9-M.png

Gorath starts the frozen one with a hit for 44.

i-zxCr4Z4-M.png

Once Owyn is to full combat hp - Gorath finishes the fight with a thrust for 46.

i-mtwhxV5-M.png

We didn't get to see the power of the Black Slayers - they can come back from the dead. I'm not sure if Bane of Black slayers prevents them from doing so or if we simply kill everyone too quickly for it to come into play.
Either way - James gets a bit better at being a knight.

i-NfhsTwp-M.png

And Owyn at being a mage.

i-skrWm9C-M.png

The first nighthawk has some defensive potions.

i-K2djZXX-M.png

Next one is boring.

i-3wSLnbt-M.png

And so is the one after that.

i-gDvsNhr-M.png

The Black Slayer has the upgraded sword. It didn't help him any.

i-w8hPjgV-M.png

Behind the nighthawks is a random shop.

i-w8hPjgV-M.png

Its confusing when the shop looks like an armor but sounds like a goods store.

i-tQmD2D6-M.png

We're good on all of that.

i-gpBcxnD-M.png

Boring shop. They're not even buying those annoying Tsurani crossbows we've been carrying.

i-FWgkPjt-M.png

There's a stump right behind the store we only notice due to the Spyglass.

i-BBX2ZXG-M.png

Nice!

i-m2Gjrmr-M.png

Eventually we come upon a farmhouse.

i-LScGz3J-M.png

Seems like the farmhouse is not generic after all.

i-483rhtL-M.png

I'm not sure if I would let some armed individuals off the road just because they say call me a "good friend".

i-fWr2J5c-M.png

I do think I'd be more articulate than that...

i-zTKNwhX-M.png

I wonder how people in those times would just have fresh water in their house. Probably some nearby well? Then why wouldn't we use that?

i-F446Kks-M.png

Hmmmm, there appear to be some hearing problems here.

i-X32rX9j-M.png

This is starting to get comical.

i-SVs5vtZ-M.png

James failed to clear up the misunderstanding.

i-h5n3pSS-M.png

Perhaps not having a door in the WOULD help.

i-HqVgcBJ-M.png

I guess there are two geriatrics in there.

i-s5xK7kN-M.png

Could it be there folks were playing with us? Either way, not worth blowing the vocal chords.

i-cJDXcDw-M.png

There's a hidey hole in the field.

i-tcB6GD6-M.png

But its impossible to loot, the game keeps thinking I'm clicking on corn no matter which angle I approach it from.

i-9CJBpZB-M.png

We approach another open area with a lot of items of interest.

i-kfpbkhQ-M.png

There's a hidely hole near the road with some more Healing Packs.

i-tbb4QtG-M.png

There's another one to the west - but its a bit useless.

i-GQgbGvt-M.png

The points of the interest to the east are a trio chests.

i-WF84r6s-M.png

The letters for the first one are:

TUORBCTN
ARNNEIAE
SOLOTENT
MHTSHYKS

i-wdXH8nC-M.png

The second:

TRSE
PENS
MAMY
NIOT

i-Prz7H5j-M.png

The last one:

BESTD
SLESE
NRILT
FOTOY

I could not get this one. Perhaps our resident Wagon expert Baud can help?

i-Zbkjc6t-M.png

The answers and loot from the first two:

You are my <answer>, my only <answer>, You make me happy when skies are gray...

i-zjr3F4z-M.png

Its nice to replenish the melee potions.

i-mG8NMh9-M.png

Say my <answer>, say my <answer>, if no one is around you...

i-HhvrPrW-M.png

James gets an upgrade to his temporary enchantment oil.

i-bkT95fJ-M.png

We'll explore the open area next time.

I have no idea, last time I just went and checked a dictionary (and then posted the pic, since you were wondering about it)

Kenting Rush awaits!

But first: apparently we have more than one resident Wagon expert. Thanks CappenVarra!

i-Cf9tSdv-M.png

It seems the rewards are often proportional to the difficulty of the puzzle.

i-RPMphhh-M.png

North of the chests is another two points of interest. They appear to be a house and a barn.

i-BKkRB3n-M.png

Looks like the barn has some loot.

i-dptLkm4-M.png

Not much, but this is always useful.

i-cJQxXrH-M.png

The house on the other hand... so if no one lived here in a while - who in the world is taking care of the chickens in the barn?

i-DQsCt6n-M.png

It seems there is more stuff to the east of us.

i-RjrDSBs-M.png

No puzzle there. And it appears - no trap.

i-xdb4qf2-M.png

Just a simple lock instead.

i-DPbbj2j-M.png

Oh! What's this?

i-KbKNZVg-M.png

What? So people just randomly leave their requests in boxes? And why do they need to identify themselves? Seems like a system ripe for abuse and potential blackmail.

i-DjPVLxb-M.png

There's another locked box.

i-Q2CRvnq-M.png

And the last point of interest was a stump.

i-KBNJwpN-M.png

Seems like there's some kind of hidden area behind the mountains with a lot of points of interest. We head North - trying to find a way in.

i-kLktHgm-M.png

But the way is not immediate and we'd like not to skip stuff to the other side of the open area, so we head back west towards other points of interest.

i-JzcLr3j-M.png

More chests.

i-vQB6gzD-M.png

Only one of them is a puzzle chest. The letters are:

CLAYS
SATRE
IHBID
TOELO

i-fSVB9tt-M.png

Answer and loot:

Fairly simple.

i-6G2FjKG-M.png

What's with all the gems lately? If these rubies can really be turned into Emeralds - we're going to be rich once again.

i-h4NrJw3-M.png

Owyn already knows this.

i-LW5Bsvf-M.png

The other chest is just plain open.

i-hHRk89s-M.png

We see a lot of points of interest to the west... it's houses!

i-tqXhdTB-M.png

Oh. We stumbled into Kenting Rush!

i-9b9ShQh-M.png

Our bags are full, so first I rush to find a store. The town seems big! Halfway in we trigger a meeting with someone.

i-qHWSqx6-M.png

Ah. Its the infamous Navon du Sandau! Seems like he immediately identifies James.

i-BFjV3ts-M.png

Yeah. Don't generally start a conversation this way.

i-N99HpvJ-M.png

Didn't the kid in Romney mention the nighthawks smelled like a flower?

i-T85xhj3-M.png

Hmmm, maybe nighthawks are watching us? Or they generally live here and pick up the scent?

i-ctPFr9G-M.png

Well, if Navon is a Nighthawk - so far he's playing it off quite casually.

i-FcXWjwd-M.png

Time to ask him about the conflict with Count Corvalis.

i-mx8NVnX-M.png

Directly it seems.

i-mVGbZ8S-M.png

Are they really that easy to hire?

i-rs3tXF8-M.png

Perhaps that could be an avenue for us to explore.

i-kzWxzLx-M.png

What? A well known fact? Then how come its the first time we hear of it? Didn't that psychic lady we saved from a rusalki say that the man we're looking for would try to mislead us?

i-vtbg3LP-M.png

Yes, that's another good point. Peter didn't seem like he would tolerate Nighthawks at all.

i-96rgV5h-M.png

Well, that is how it usually works... But Peter straight up said he would not tolerate Nighthawks.

i-HL9ZnMX-M.png

I guess we're following up on that coincidence regarding his last name.

i-qLggqf4-M.png

Yup. Though... would he even admit to it if he was?

i-mnv23cf-M.png

Navon is either completely innocent or very much a cool customer.

i-TxXMSmd-M.png

Hmmmm. Would Navon even know much about it?

i-Tx9S97J-M.png

Good way to put that question.

i-KTZRZjW-M.png

Seems Navon is just repeating Peter's bit on it.

i-dSXBxtv-M.png

Yeah, like word for word.

i-9xt4DS8-M.png

Huh? He just said he didn't think Count could have meant for that to happen.

i-SWRRJHm-M.png

There must have been something in his tone that suggested that HE did think that. So the count suspected his son? We still don't know how old the son was. If this game was made recently I would have been sure it would have had to do with his son being gay. But I don't think that topic was approached in video games back in early 90s.

i-xjXQPQX-M.png

Time to talk about the last topic.

i-ghLgF4G-M.png

Yeah, would be nice to learn that move Ivan mentioned.

i-gF6W74M-M.png

Its good we didn't try Ivan on back then.

i-cwfC7p7-M.png

Hehe. Ivan dug his own grave by telling us about it.

i-fhGvmCr-M.png

Still strange that they call it a move - its gotta be some kind of combination.

i-Qp6gMqc-M.png

Yes, that is what Navon was implying.

i-XWtnzwF-M.png

With all the gem's we've been getting - its an obvious yes.

i-Gnz8Lqb-M.png

Yup, yup, yup. I just recently started going to a local chess club and it is kinda nice to pull out a combo on an opponent.

i-6PPBRhj-M.png

No move or combination can be made in a vacuum. The conditions have to be just right.

i-ZnpmzkT-M.png

I'm looking forward to the game :)

i-JcbCRVj-M.png

We've got nothing more to say - so we say goodbye.

i-dcVF3rw-M.png

Aside from a few suspicions - Navon seems like quite a nice guy.

i-Cv3VMFM-M.png

We finally find a shop. It's a gem shop! What luck!

i-GfcXt2t-M.png

That's the first time we've seen a diamond. Gosh they're expensive!

i-qHZ37kf-M.png

No wonder people will do anything to get their hands on one.

i-JTz3Dvt-M.png

Nothing new there.

i-6C4LR2V-M.png

Ok, time to explore the town properly. First we check this well since we're looking for knight's piece in one.

i-QXHRxsT-M.png

Oh! Sounds like this might be it.

i-Bz4MFXL-M.png

I always wondered - how would these women use the restroom?

i-VrdhHR3-M.png

So those trusted friends would follow the women to the restroom in order to unlock the undergarments?

i-C98BcJJ-M.png

That would explain how the man would be able to open the lock to hide such notes - but how about the woman?

i-MdqchCf-M.png

If nothing else - some love notes could be amusing.

i-3rG2v2L-M.png

Huh, no opportunity to pick. Its good that we found such a key at some point earlier. Anyway - a knight's piece!

i-pxs9bLs-M.png

We start checking houses. I will no longer take screenshots of houses and any of the generic ones.

i-kwHdNV4-M.png

Sounds like this is a learning opportunity. Why would we say no?

i-LMSzGSR-M.png

Sounds like Scouting improved.

i-d9kJxcH-M.png

Hah, looks like HP did too!

i-sgmsKrp-M.png

How is Owyn still this bad at it?

i-D7ZDnNf-M.png

Gorath's neck hairs are getting supernaturally good.

i-GrDGdqH-M.png

Do statues really get carved out of granite? Thought its usually marble.

i-8MDtdqP-M.png

Well, the artist may be an ass - but his product will likely bring joy to people centuries past his death.

i-JCx54kS-M.png

Seems like the joke is on us.

i-cCtk8kz-M.png

Hmmm, I suppose this was our hint to check the well if we missed the note in the chest.

i-htfdDrR-M.png

Hmmm, what is this about a sorcerer?

i-r6vSzsq-M.png

Hmmm. Suppose this is he.

i-S5Mcbqn-M.png

I know what the lady said. But a lightning staff was like 1200 gold to buy. Might sell for a lot too.

i-s4qgzbK-M.png

Well - from the books we kinda know it is.

i-FNb54Zr-M.png

I thought the first two were supposed to be easy? Uh... I think Lord of Eagles was named differently. Ashen something maybe? So we say no.

i-Jbb6cF9-M.png

So I think the previous time I played the game I did not get what happened here.

i-hgsQBRR-M.png

But now it makes sense - Owyn tricked the sorcerer into asking him a basic question that is easy to answer correctly before the sorcerer had a chance to ask his impossible one.
The only minus is that we don't know what the super difficult question was. Perhaps it had to do with ... a wagon?

i-NmbxdmP-M.png

While we shuffle inventory around to make room for the staff - here's info on the Knight's Piece.

i-dpTdrb4-M.png

We find an abandoned home with some change.

i-BGC83rZ-M.png

Hmmm? Has James been here before?

i-48nGNZT-M.png

Sounds like a dream.

i-kwf6gXK-M.png

Beautiful women don't often sit around waiting for you to come back. Think James learned a rather good lesson here.

i-Pf4LKjN-M.png

We find an inn. That guy was just a gambler.

i-HWBctNK-M.png

But the lute is the ever-present income for us.

i-s8ZHwdF-M.png

A nearby house apparently makes the food that we can buy at the inn.

i-Frpxd9Z-M.png

We actually ended up buying 14 rations there.

i-96N2HM5-M.png

Pigeons are no Nighthawks.

i-qLkmCBK-M.png

Oh, so that's what the Wyvern egg was for? Seems like a whole lot of trouble to carry one around just to be able to cast one spell to control one type of enemy.

i-kwWvDD7-M.png

This abandoned house does not have much.

i-nDLcwrZ-M.png

There's a house off to the side of town. As we run towards it we run into some sort of guards.

i-ZRTvKbB-M.png

James hits for 33.

i-GzqBXLt-M.png

We decide to try out the other new spell.
Owyn's spell causes fireflies to repeatedly sting the closest enemy. He takes 68 damage and dies.

i-mR723NL-M.png

Gorath's swing hits for 56. Enemy dies.

i-6xzgX47-M.png

James finishes his original enemy with a thrust for 35.

i-FzgcKDt-M.png

Gorath charges the guy charging Owyn - a simple thrust for 45 is enough to put him down. Seems like these guys are pushovers.

i-qwRcmcv-M.png

James hits the last guy for 33.

i-tnqkDd8-M.png

After Owyn rests a few times, the final guy starts running. James is forced to finish him with a thrust for 36.

i-M8hhMrq-M.png

It seems the enemies are still there after the fight is over!

i-7ZSvPBb-M.png

Seems like they're not defeatable?

i-zMTf5Rp-M.png

We back out and find a tavern that was closed earlier - open.

i-LQQW4qg-M.png

Nothing there but the lute.

i-r8R9jfc-M.png

So... what do we do next?

A. Where is that temple of Kahooli? Lets look around and find it.
B. We have the knight's piece! Lets head down south an explore that place behind the waterfall.

If this game was made recently I would have been sure it would have had to do with his son being gay. But I don't think that topic was approached in video games back in early 90s.

Yeah, at that time it wasn't like everyone hated gays or something, but it was just something you didn't talk about. Everyone just kind of pretended to not notice them, so you wouldn't get a plot line like that.

I vote A because I've gotten through this at least 3 times and I still can't remember all the plot twists, but I'm pretty sure you have to figure out whether the Count or Navon du Sandau (or both) are lying before you can finish the dungeon behind the waterfall. And going into a dungeon and then backtracking is a hell of a chore.

but, yeah, granite seems to be less common for sculptures, especially for portrait at human scale

Lets head back down South.

As we get back to Cavall's Keep we check in with the Corvallis family and Peter - only the Count seems to have a new topic.

i-NZ5S59D-M.png

Seems like Navon's claim led to this topic.

i-xFjJW3b-M.png

The count claims innocence.

i-R8rgRZ4-M.png

Hmmmm, given the bad blood between the two men - Navon's claim seems hollow.

i-pdRQDZh-M.png

Oh? That's quite the revelation. But... would a man connected with Nighthawks really admit to this? Hard to say. We really need to get more evidence to accuse either of the two men.

i-drMv5vs-M.png

Perhaps that could be our way in?

i-fwBvDDr-M.png

Hmmmm. I wonder how the temple is connected and what caused the bad blood.

i-WVwkMfG-M.png

We head on down to that magic shop in the wilderness. The extra staff sells well.

i-2XbDKLr-M.png

It's time to try our new chess moves. We take the portal back to Malac's Cross.

i-mRhKqXc-M.png

Turns out that Ivan has a new topic for us.

i-6MJN6hp-M.png

Yeah - that place was interesting. I wonder if anyone else knows about its magic properties.

i-SDf42bG-M.png

So the town was named for a Dragon slayer or a Dragon?

i-w2NdpPz-M.png

The whole order of events seems confusing.

i-6hqsjts-M.png

I understand the world of Midkemia was based one some homebrew magical world that Feist and his friends played with. This whole sequence sounds like their backstory.

i-R3n6KVg-M.png

Mmmm, more than talking if we listen to Owyn.

i-6pcss8K-M.png

Anyway, we're here for a high stakes chess game.

i-9KQ3mbc-M.png

Chess games with simultaneous attacks on opposite sides of the board are quite interesting. Either way, we just earned a 100% quality emerald.

i-5HpqsGG-M.png

We have quite a few rubies - so after we teleport back we head down to Prank's stone and talk to the guy with the conversion machine.

i-qL6jTVz-M.png

Oh! Magic! We convert all our rubies.

i-mtRBKF6-M.png

Aaaaand... the diamonds are of terrible quality and sell for less than the rubies. I think the man is a cheat - he simply has bunch of cheap diamonds and pops them out after taking the better rubies.

i-JBvZT2G-M.png

Anyway - nothing more to do - we head back to the waterfall.

i-3wHHW32-M.png

Those walls were built... And seems like there are spiders here.

i-jn9HZR5-M.png

As we switch skills to try to sneak up on the spiders - it turns out James got better at defense at some point.

i-TZvN4M8-M.png

Our increased Stealth skills pay off.

i-pknzGTW-M.png

James hits for 38.

i-SF8F7C7-M.png

Owyn's frost bolt for 5 hp hits the leftmost spider. Freezing him and doing 10 damage.

i-5PgqWdQ-M.png

Gorath 1 shots a spider, damage was impossible to see.

i-X5n2znh-M.png

James finishes a spider with a hit for 40.

i-k3FnPN6-M.png

Gorath 1 shots another one. 59 damage.

i-xNXmx33-M.png

James hits the frozen spider for 38.

i-V3jTXcJ-M.png

I let Owyn finish the spider. He does with a thrust for 13.

i-2wSJ4t4-M.png

A bush? What is it doing here?

i-fS2SkRk-M.png

Hmmm... I can't figure this place out.

i-bbZ37wm-M.png

Wow, that must be a tremendous amount of berries.

i-mTLvcCX-M.png

We'll find out more about this place next time.

if I only had a sovereign, for every song I'd sung
every time I've had to play while people sat there drunk
you know I'd catch the next mandala back to where I live
oh Lord, stuck in ol' Silden again
