We quickly reach Sar Sargoth and start looking further east.
And quickly start finding bodies.
There are a lot of them.
I will try to limit the loot to ones that had something interesting or something I actually took.
As there are also a lot of bodies with nothing good.
There are some farm houses and fields around here. The bodies are fertilizing the fields.
Again - they might have survived if they had stayed inside.
Aren't these pretty easy to carry?

Well, even when the houses hold nonsense - the bodies can sometimes carry good stuff.
We explore wilderness to the south and find a stump.
I wish I could sell these. Gorath can pick locks for that key and we have like 15 of them by now.
New type of loot caches?

Oh well... more bodies.

There are a lot of houses, but they're mostly abandoned.

The only other house with someone in it appears to be this one.
This place is starting to sound a bit Soviet.
Amusingly enough the house that looks like a shop was abandoned. And the one that looked like a tavern is a shop!
General stores can be a bit borning.
Although... Picklocks can be useful.
The book trains assessment - we've already read it.
Further down the road we find a tent.
Seems like some kind of supply tent?
Uh... What kind of supplies are these???
We find a chest behind a hill.
The letters are:
PHENGSS
SRPBSHE
ASLUIOD
TEOVTLT
I have no idea on the answer.
While the codex ponders on the chest. Let's also ponder on where to head next. We could:
A. Head south towards Wyke.
Or:
B. Continue East towards Raglam.
And quickly start finding bodies.
There are a lot of them.

Hmmmm, sounds like I need to do a better job of providing map screenshots.
You're doing fine, it's just me. One of the few things about this game that annoys me is that you can't quite zoom out far enough to really get a good idea of where you are sometimes. And the world map only gives you a very rough idea and half the time it's showing you in the wrong place. I know most of the world well enough after going back and forth across it so many times, but this is one part that I totally do not remember at all.

Well, next session is here:
First we try the chest hint provided by ERYFKRAD - and it's good!
The loot is surprisingly uninspiring.
I decide to explore the wilderness to the south of the road again and find a house in the hills - there appear to be some enemies surrounding it.
As I go to switch skills I find out HP has increased.
Nice! I do wish he starts healing 4 hp per rest during combat round like Gorath does.
More good news - we sneak up on them.
Owyn lands frost bolt that does 20 damage as well.
Gorath hits with a swing for 57.
Owyn gets hit for 7 by a charging Goblin.
He hits back with a thrust for 10.
Gorath rushes in and hits the same goblin for 40.
And Owyn hits again, this time for 11.
Gorath finishes a moredhel warrior with a thrust for 54.
Owyn hits again, but the goblin is still up after taking 12 damage.
Gorath hits the other goblin with a swing for 51.
Owyn manages to miss the limping goblin he's been beating up. Other goblin starts running too.
Gorath finishes that other goblin.
And Owyn somehow misses again.
Gorath does not, think the damage was 48.
They rest. And Gorath kills the last moredhel when he awakes with a thrust for 49.
Unimpressive.
I guess this goblin mercenary was paid with the gem.
I these guys some sort of second rate troops, their arms are lower quality than what we've seen in this Chapter so far.
Yeah, poor.

So sounds like the army is to the east of us. Going through that way would be difficult.
Which means we probably won't be able to sneak through to Northwarden.
But perhaps we can still take the south road to Highcastle?
Yes, with Narab out of the way in the Kingdom the way could be clear.
Hmmmm, sounds like she thinks way to Northwarden would be closed too. We shall see. And what is this Moraelin?
It does not appear to be marked on the map, so I *THINK* it might be this passage to the West.
Does Gorath mean his clan by *us* or just him and Owyn. I'm not quite clear as to what happened to his clan. If they're all dead as a result of his flight - then he seems like an idiot.
Oh! A way out after all. Sounds like the same place Gorath got out last time.
Seems like its heading back to Harlech and taking the road south from there.

This sounds like it would come really handy in Harlech and get us past those troops!

She's kinda coming as the character that's easier to sympathise with as a result of this conversation.

What a mystery. For all we know Delekhan commanded the six to do it for some bizarre reason.
Cullich's teachings improved Owyn's abilities to the max.
We go back to the road and stumble into enemies. Gorath gets hit for 7.
Owyn lands a fully charged fireball on the ogre. 60 damage to him, 13 to the moredhel to the side. But... no witch damage???
The ogre casts a wisps spell on Owyn, and does 36 damage when all is said and done to him.
Gorath can't reach the witch so he charges and kills the ogre.
Owyn gets shot for 10.
Gorath gets fireballed for 60 damage by the witch. Moredhel next to him takes 14.
Gorath charges the witch and kills her in one hit.
Owyn was down to 11 hp. He drinks 5 restoratives to get up to 46.
Archer misses him this time and Owyn gets to go again - he freezes the archer and does 20 damage with Frost Bolt.
Gorath misses the other warrior.
But lands the next attempt for 34.
And finishes with a thrust for 40.
Before we're fully rested - archer becomes awake and shoots Owyn for 8. Gorath finishes him with a hit for 45.
This improved Gorath's physical prowess.
No wonder the archer landed a shot.
Lockpicks are in need at the moment.
Back to mediocrity.
Wow, a witch with bad loot.
We head back up north to just make sure we can't get through the army. And find a hidey hole.
But nothing useful inside.
Lets see if we can get through to Raglam.
There's the bridge across the river.
Hmmmm, a lot of enemies in the way.
Yup, no way through here.
We'll try the way south next time.

I think when he talks about his clan he literally means his clan. There's some backstory where he led them out of the country as refugees or something.
Elvandar is the country of the nice elves. This is something I never really got because apparently you had to read the books to understand.

It doesn't get explained anywhere in the game, Narab was the one responsible for your escape.
Would love to be proven wrong, I distinctly remember looking for this everywhere and no answer ever being provided.

Seems like a dumb move since we end up slaughtering his clan with the lightning rock a bit later. I guess we'll find out if I stumble upon some answers in some obscure chest in the woods as this game sometimes does that.

I will be out of town for a week and a half so there won't be any more sessions until I get back.
We head south from the bridge and notice a hidey hole we missed on the way North:
More buried swords. Are the moredhel like... dumping their travel gear before being levied?
A short while after we find a tent.
Some time? Why is it still standing then? Reminds me of Dyatlov Pass Incident, creepy.
And then we stumble into a trap!
So.... the lightning can stop the fireball from the second gun and the pole can stop the fireball from the first gun. But if it does the lightning goes away and second gun gets to fire. So... what???
I go as far as I can with Owyn. Now he needs to either eat lightning or fireball to proceed.
Seems like the only thing to do is to now is to turn off the lightning.
Which mean Owyn eats a fireball anyway... At least we can rest him up. Wonder what I missed in the logic of this one.
We then get to a bridge. It appears to be unguarded! Perhaps we can escape south despite Cullich's reservations!
On the other side of the bridge there's a chest to the left.
It's unlocked, untrapped and does not have much.
Soon after we reach a village. What is that house on the other side of the river? Pretty sure there was no way to get there from the bridge area up north.

The river looks frozen - but no - we cannot cross to reach that house.
First house we try turns out to be an armorer's shop.
Think this is the first time we've seen Dragon Plate Armor for sale. Expensive!
Seems like threat of being poisoned is quite common in the Northlands.
The only piece of equipment we've been carrying for sale is this xbow and the guy doesn't even want it.
Most of the town seems abandoned. Entire population has been mobilized.
Wow, some hag must have lived here.
We already know Frostbolt.
Even the taverns are closed.
The few left behind are women, children and the disabled.
Seems like despite getting his face burned the guy is still bloodthirsty.
We find a few food bushes, they had 2 rations each.
Eventually we reach a body and some enemies.
The food was spoiled, the guy must have been here for a while.
Oh. Another roadblock in our path to escape. Seems Cullich was correct.
We must head back north and then to the west. Back to Harlech. On the way we notice a stump we missed.
Some change is always welcome.
As we approach the bridge we can really see that there was no way to get to the other side of the river to reach that house we saw earlier.
Hmmm... But perhaps there's a way to sneak past those enemies to the east we saw earlier?
And... no. We can't.
It seems the way north east is closed to us as Cullich has said.
So we make the long trek Westward to Harlech. And when we see the guards - we cast the special little spell.
Nothing amusing about the spell not working! We might not be able to get past this town if that is the case!

Seems like we can just go past them now. So it affects Moraeulf and the local guards but not Gorath?
Second house in town seems to house Moraeulf himself.
He looks... unelegant. Just compare him to Gorath's portrait.
Hmmm, perhaps this is where VGMG's theory is from? Seems like something Gorath made up to make the situation in Sar-Sargoth seem more dire.
Can this just happen? Like a random dude walks up to the commander and successfully pretends to be a messenger from supreme leader? No royal seal on him, or anything to back up his word?
Plus I thought Gorath's visage was widely known. But not to Moraeulf apparently.
So I guess this guy is gunning for the Son of the Year award.

A temple? Hmmmm, can we teleport out of the north perhaps?

Oh well, seems like the faiths up here are as rough as the populace.
But... Guiswa is one of the deities capable of level 3 blessings. But that's expensive!
And yet... we decide to go for it. The armor is quite good and what else do we spend money on anyway?
Anyway, now that we'e done with Harlech, only Armengar stands in our way of escaping.

Unforeseen consequences.
Not quite, at the time I probably interpreted that exactly the same way you did. It's from a claim on the Wiki that I haven't been able to confirm or deny without reading A Crown Imperiled or Magician's End in full.

As we keep going south we run headfirst into an encounter.
Owyn gets shot for 7.
He freezes a goblin charging him (doing 20 damage in the process) but takes 2 himself - the arrow was poisoned once again.
Gorath hits with a swing through block - 54 damage. Then gets hit for 6 but the charging archer.
Owyn freezes a second charging opponent (once again doing 20 damage).
Gorath finishes the injured opponent with a thrust for 52.
Owyn takes antidote.
Gorath's swing misses the archer.
But his thrust hits for 44.
And his next one finishes the archer with a hit for 48.
After that he takes care of the guy that has been frozen from first turn that Owyn took. The hit was for 45.
After Owyn rests some. Gorath strikes the ogre as he unfreezes. It was 54 damage.
Gorath then finishes the fight with a swing.
No armor, but apparently he had a sack or something for the gold.
I need to start remembering to use these when enemies get into Owyn's range. His spellcasting makes encounters much easier.
Gold... must have been a goblin merc.
And the damned poisoner.
We keep exploring and find a pretty waterfall.
And then a stump.
This game is making me want to go wandering the woods - searching random stumps for serious cash.
Further down the road we see some more enemies - and we fail to sneak up on them again.
Gorath gets hit for 11. And then again for 8.
Owyn can't reach the archer, so charges a goblin and hits for 5.
Gorath misses.
Instead gets hit for 12. Then Owyn gets hit for 8. Then Gorath gets hit for 13.
Given the development of the fight thus far - I decide to use a charge on Owyn's staff. That goblin he hit previously gets hit for 40 points of damage.
Gorath lands a thrust for 46.
Owyn lands a swing on the goblin he's been beating up. 9 damage is not enough - that goblin must have really good armor.
Gorath gets hit for 8. He strikes back for 48 and finally the first enemy is down.
He then gets hit for 13.
Owyn helps out Gorath by using up another charge. 40 damage.
Gorath finishes that goblin with a hit for 48.
Owyn gets hit for 13.
He tries to finish a goblin, but a thrust for 7 is still not enough.
Gorath fails to land a thrust.
And so does Owyn.
Gorath lands one for 39.
And Owyn does for 12.
This time Gorath is parried. And Owyn gets hit for 12.
The super injured goblin starts running and Owyn chases him down with a hit for 7.
Gorath is parried again. Then another goblin runs - Owyn lands a swing on it for 18.
Gorath misses and Owyn gets hit for 12.
Owyn pulls range, Gorath hits for 38. Goblin starts running.
Owyn casts fully charged Grief at it.
Everyone rests up and Gorath finishes the fight with a hit for 49.
Despite getting seriously beat up - Gorath only got better at beating them back up even harder.
Owyn got better at both. He was dodging strikes from 3 goblins at once for most of the fight.
Nice thing about goblins - they carry money.
The bad thing is they sometimes hit kinda hard due to good swords.
These rations were spoiled.
This is the guy that Owyn kept barely scratching.
Looks like there was potential for more poisoned status.
We keep going south and find a lot of bushes.
Oh wow. Look at all these.
A grand total for 30 restoratives! Where did we keep all the spare vials?
Soon after we reach a fork in the road with some bodies. Some kind of battle?
Oh, we've made it to Armengar! What are these bodies all about? Some kind of clan warfare? Perhaps we'll find out inside - in the next episode.

Well, there's a shop in the ruins.
Why buy armor when you can slay hundreds of moredhel and Nighthawks and loot theirs?
Speaking of Nighthawks, they seem like forever ago. Funny how time flies.
And who would buy these when they're literally growing on bushes outside of town?
Next: we find a tavern. That gentleman seems interesting.
Is he a man, or a moredhel?
Looks like a moredhel to me. Seems like he's asking for his head to be removed from his shoulders. Or is this place not so pro-Delekhan?
Seems like Gorath knows him as well.
Yellowtail? Perhaps this is what Gorath's escape to the Kingdom looks like to the common moredhel.
Gorath's a brooding quiet elf. But it seems he's just as quick as James was with determining motive.

There seems to be an area we can enter from the city. So... I guess that's what happened to the city.
So Naptha's kinda like oil I guess.
And got bit by...
Hmmmm.... I guess if you're already in a place with a lot of Naptha - you also stick some of it into dark holes.
Seems like we can also inspect the buckets.
The second one was empty, but this one had even MORE naptha.
We leave town and proceed south in hopes of finding the Naptha mines. But quickly run into more enemies.
This should make the fight easier.
Owyn griefs the far away moredhel.
Gorath rushes and hits the closer goblin. 50-something damage.
Other goblin shoots and hits Owyn with an explosive arrow. Owyn takes 12 damage.
Owyn griefs him as well.
Gorath finishes his goblin with a hit for 60-something.
I decide to train Gorath's xbow skill while Owyn is resting. First shot hits for 24.
And so does the second.
The third hits for 25.
Fourth for 27. How tough is this guy!
Fifth shot hits for 30 and finally puts down the moredhel. At least we're hitting with every shot. Elven Crossbow and Quarrels are nice!
He then shoots the goblin for 25.
And checks on him to see how much health he has left. 33 is not that much...
After Owyn rests up a bit more. Gorath shoots again - 25 damage is less than 33 hp.
And his next shots for 30 is greater than 8.
The practice pays off.
Flaming quarrels sound bizarre to me. But then again - there's magic in this world.
This was the far away moredhel - guess I was wrong to grief him first. I was SURE he was going to shoot some poisoned quarrels at us.

My memory is hazy but it was one of the key plot points in the book dealing with Murmandamus' war (or maybe the war took multiple books, I don't even remember now), like a lot in this game.

There were 3 tents next to the place where Gorath and Owyn had the conversation. But only one of them had anothing.
We proceed across the bridge we saw on the map earlier and... run into a trap.
This looks complicated.
But its actually fairly simple. We can't go forward since the shield can only block one of the two guns. We can't go to the right due to lightning staffs. But - we can definitely go to the left.
Think I saw the entrance to the mines to the left, but there are a lot of chests straight ahead.
Wow, thats a lot of Naptha if these are the contents of all of them. And they just leave this out?
But as soon as we take a step towards the second chest...
A birthmark? Looks like a scar to me.
Gorath launches the brilliant plan.
Guess Owyn is playing along.

I guess their way of haggling is going overboard in every claim.

Its kinda interesting that all the moredhel seem to recognize Gorath, but this guy has no clue.

Well, since the game has been throwing Naptha at us. Might as well start using it.
Amusingly enough... there's also a 'Flaming' weapon effect in the game. But those I think you can only find on weapons dropped by enemies. Not sure if they were planning on even more items to enhance weapons and cut them or what.
Anyway, we only get to about here before we see something ahead.

Gorath misses and gets shot for 3 points of damage.
He then tries a swing and ALSO misses. The archer is pretty bad though and hits his buddy for 15 instead of Gorath.
Gorath finally hits. 67 damage and goblin goes down. He then gets shot for 3.
Gorath takes revenge on the archer. 67 damage isn't quite enough.
The follow up does 79. Goblin goes down.
Once Owyn is rested up - Gorath one shots the last goblin with a hit for 68.
So... why are we still armed and why are there armed goblins attacking us. What sort of mines are these?
Maybe goblins are the guards and the game is treating this like - slaves not listening to guards sort of situation?
Hmmm, looks like Gorath got lucky with not getting poisoned after getting shot twice.
The very next room has more goblins.
Dammit Owyn, first you don't have enough muscles on your bones to make a good slave, now you stumble...
Owyn gets hit for 13.
And misses in return.
Gorath does not - 65 damage is enough to one shot Owyn's assailant.
Gorath parries a few blows from the last goblin while Owyn rests up. But then misses the goblin himself.
Owyn tries to help out but also misses.
Gorath's next attempt one shots this goblin as well. It was for 66.
All that parrying improved Gorath's ability to do so in the future.
Was this goblin worried about running into trolls down here? Or is he the musician of the lot?
Guess these guys got paid in rubies.
As we continue further... what is that?

Not sure its worth it to disable it, so Owyn inspects it instead. Not a whole lot of stamina...
Drake launches a firebolt of some sort at Gorath. It hits for 24. Guess Owyn should have disabled it after all.
Gorath one shots it in return. 85 damage.
Owyn got a little bit better at not stumbling.
This is all we've explored and we've already had 3 fights.
And there's another fight ahead.
See! No stumbling.
Owyn griefs the leftmost one.
Gorath one shots the central one with a hit for 66.
But his swing at the other goblin is parried.
In fact the goblin parries him twice more before trying and failing to counter strike. Gorath's next strike hits and kills the goblin. 66 damage.
With Gorath burnt by the drake - Owyn was back to full travel health before Gorath is. So Owyn starts beating up the frozen goblin. 11 damage.
And another 11.
And another...
Gorath is fully rested after Owyn hits once again for 11. I decide to let Owyn just finish the fight by getting some training.
Which he eventually does.
Seems like Owyn might have gotten lucky with which goblin he cast Grief on.
We didn't need much from this pack, but both guys have 14 days worth now.
These antidotes are getting a lot more use then they used to.

Amusingly enough... there's also a 'Flaming' weapon effect in the game. But those I think you can only find on weapons dropped by enemies. Not sure if they were planning on even more items to enhance weapons and cut them or what.
Anyway, we only get to about here before we see something ahead.

Owyn griefs a goblin.
Gorath misses and gets shot for 3 points of damage.
He then tries a swing and ALSO misses. The archer is pretty bad though and hits his buddy for 15 instead of Gorath.
Gorath finally hits. 67 damage and goblin goes down. He then gets shot for 3.
Gorath takes revenge on the archer. 67 damage isn't quite enough.
The follow up does 79. Goblin goes down.
Once Owyn is rested up - Gorath one shots the last goblin with a hit for 68.
So... why are we still armed and why are there armed goblins attacking us. What sort of mines are these?
Maybe goblins are the guards and the game is treating this like - slaves not listening to guards sort of situation?
Hmmm, looks like Gorath got lucky with not getting poisoned after getting shot twice.
The very next room has more goblins.
Dammit Owyn, first you don't have enough muscles on your bones to make a good slave, now you stumble...
Owyn gets hit for 13.
And misses in return.
Gorath does not - 65 damage is enough to one shot Owyn's assailant.
Gorath parries a few blows from the last goblin while Owyn rests up. But then misses the goblin himself.
Owyn tries to help out but also misses.
Gorath's next attempt one shots this goblin as well. It was for 66.
All that parrying improved Gorath's ability to do so in the future.
Was this goblin worried about running into trolls down here? Or is he the musician of the lot?
Guess these guys got paid in rubies.
As we continue further... what is that?
Kinda a big hatchling...
Not sure its worth it to disable it, so Owyn inspects it instead. Not a whole lot of stamina...
Drake launches a firebolt of some sort at Gorath. It hits for 24. Guess Owyn should have disabled it after all.
Gorath one shots it in return. 85 damage.
Owyn got a little bit better at not stumbling.
This is all we've explored and we've already had 3 fights.
And there's another fight ahead.
See! No stumbling.

Gorath one shots the central one with a hit for 66.
But his swing at the other goblin is parried.
In fact the goblin parries him twice more before trying and failing to counter strike. Gorath's next strike hits and kills the goblin. 66 damage.
With Gorath burnt by the drake - Owyn was back to full travel health before Gorath is. So Owyn starts beating up the frozen goblin. 11 damage.
And another 11.
And another...
Gorath is fully rested after Owyn hits once again for 11. I decide to let Owyn just finish the fight by getting some training.
Which he eventually does.
Seems like Owyn might have gotten lucky with which goblin he cast Grief on.
We didn't need much from this pack, but both guys have 14 days worth now.
These antidotes are getting a lot more use then they used to.
That's it for today. Lets hope the concentration of enemies slows down as we move further into the mines.
