Remember kids, the best way to shoot a gun is to grip it by the magazine and to have the sights just low enough to be useless.

You blow up walls to make your own door into places. You murder enemies and then vultures eat them days later. If that's not an RPG, I don't get what you people want from life.

if it doesn't have story mode and quest compass its not a rpg game, lol

Focusing on the relatively simple character stat development system in JA2 doesn't really work to answer the question, because Silent Storm exists.

Silent Storm plays like a somewhat worse version of JA2, but it has classes and perk trees, like you'd find in a modern roleplaying game.

JA2 and Silent Storm have to be in the same genre, whatever that genre is.

It's a genre that involves tactical combat, unit progression, stats and story / dialog. It has a lot in common with what "RPGs" used to be, the difference is mostly a matter of emphasizing the battles more.

However, nowadays the word "RPG" has a lot of unfortunate associations, so maybe we need some new terminology, to avoid having turn based tactics games and action games with stats and visual novels all in the same genre.

It's getting to the point where it's more of a negative for a game to be classified as an RPG, because it means that romances and stuff like that are expected.

To me it always was a tactical game with RPG elements. And these elements were superbly done, not just tacked on to claim the game is the actual RPG for marketing purposes. I would say it sits in the similar place Battle Brothers does.
