Illithids are not a part of the main quest, if I recall correctly (which may not be the case! )
Note, that once we decide to follow the main quest, we'll have to complete three phases in a row before we can roam freely again. So I'd like to complete as many side quests as possible first.
The Wish quest intrigues me. I don't seem to recall ever stumbling upon it. It has my vote.
You don't get the Bag of Holding until Spellhold, at which point you're locked in.
Throwing my vote in for the illithids, but after that I think it'd be good to switch to the main quest. Mainly because it sucks to constantly have to reshuffle inventory (particularly with all the stuff Watcher's Keep throws at you), but also because after the illithids I think we're out of SoA side content that could possibly pose a challenge for The Codex, so it doesn't make any real difference whether we do the rest now or in chapter 6. OTOH, some of the optional content in the next chapters might pose a challenge if MicoSelva sticks to his current playstyle and The Codex isn't too overleveled by that point.
No they're not, but it makes sense to finish up the major Athkatla quests before going to Brynnlaw. Besides, there is hardly any loot there to strain the already crowded inventory, but if the Codex wants to make Crom Faeyr it must go there sooner or later.
Our hero does not get one-shot just yet, but we're slowly getting there.

Update #41: The Dead and The Buried
Completing second level of Watcher's Keep has netted (is that even a word?) us some crafting material.
Flail of Ages: Level Up.
But wait, there's more!
This should make our archery a bit more effective.
We're still not done here.
Is there any point to this, or are we just wasting money for the sake of satisfying your OCD?
The latter, obviously.
Character sheet summary below.
A very important Thief level up is going to arrive soon.
Those to-hit stats are for the bow with +2 infinite arrows quiver.
Firkraag forever?
Graveyard is the only part of Athkatla we have not visited yet.
We arrive safely.
Let me guess, she stopped talking soon after the priests started taking care of her.
Don't worry, little girl, I will find someone who can take you away from the church soon enough.
But now, if you don't mind, I will rob, I mean explore, your parents' tomb.
There's some magic in here.
It's fine, I guess.
Let's try this tomb now.
Meh.
This one seems promising, so let's ignore the beggar for now.
It's the gravedigger.
Looks awfully like a beggar.
Some of the inhabitants here have a problem with finality of death, it seems.
Let's fix it!
Ok, so they hit hard, big deal.
Booyah!
Say hello to Bubba Ho-tep from me.
This is interesting - looks like the items dropped by skeleton warrior are treated as being inside the sarcophagus, because the loot drop point overlaps with sarcophagus' hotspot. I don't remember this happening to me before.
Let me guess, I will pull an undead out of it.
Actually, no.
Dressing in bright red? Very inconspicuous.
And by 'bring them to justice' I mean 'kill them on the spot', in case anyone had doubts.
I'm sure we're way past that point.
Quest reminder.
I will keep my pettiness right where I want it, paladin.
Check the spoiler tag for more conversation and epic conclusion to the orphan quest from a couple of minutes ago.
Granted, a paladin is only marginally better than a priest, but there's only so much one can do without getting assed too much.
What, no money? Typical.
The Codex employs a combo of smart ass and hard ass on the gravedigger.
It's hard to believe I can be even more awesome than I am currently.
Oh, believe it.
Curiously, the game allows us to choose our first epic ability from any of the Codex' classes, not just Thief. We could go for Whirlwind Attack right now, for example.
We still choose Use Any Item, for a good start.
So, shall we go to my stash right now? I think we should.
Not at the moment. It would be a waste of time, and you're overpowered for this area anyway.
The recently dethroned crypt king dropped a few things.
But they are way below our current threshold of interest.
There's nothing interesting in the sarcophagus too.
Or in the chest.
Huh.
Not that I wouldn't like to have a hot elf chick like you around, but rules are rules.
'Rules are rules'? You are chaotic.
Does that mean I can ignore the solo part and get a band of murderous brigands at my command?
Well, no.
I rest my case.
Back to tomb raiding.
I'm getting a sense of deja vu here.
Long story short, I win.
That's a cool spell, but we already have it.
Check the spoiler tag for a stupid side-scene.
Well, at least you got something.
Uncle Lester has a point here.
You guys obviously have things to discuss in private, so I'll take my leave, 'kay?
Domestic violence is never pretty to watch.
I'm sure she will be happy to see you.
I guess he won't be needing these any more.
What wonders await behind this door?
Alright.
I am so mighty I can make skeletons bleed.
The dropped gear again became a part of the sarcophagus. Has this game always worked this way?
They should really keeps these things locked.
Would that prevent you from looting everything?
No, but I would get more XP that way.
Aha! A trap!
It's a generic +2 axe, isn't it?
Yep.
This place is a one huge waste of time so far.
Except for the epic level up.
Yeah, except for that.
And that was the last small crypt. Time to move underground. But before we do that, we need to meet someone.
We're attacked by bandits on the way. Nothing noteworthy.
Why do people keep referring to me as I was a group of people?
Why do you keep answering them as 'we'?
Yeah, why do I do that? I must be crazy! Actually, that would explain a lot. Like, what the hell I am helping people all the time.
Quest details below.
Korgan is a pretty cool guy. Eh kills people and doesn’t afraid of anything.
Note: since Korgan is not my character, I will not put any words in his mouth, but as it would be too weird, if he just followed The Codex like a mindless doll, he's definitely throw some non-verbal comments now and then.
We give him some spare equipment from the wolfskin bag.
Mind you, it's a rental, not a gift.
Time to move deep down.
You might want to stop right there.
*insert some trap comment here, do not forget to do this before posting the update, or you will appear a complete moron, and we would not like that at all, no, no, we wouldn't*
These spell symbols are rather unfamiliar-looking.
I wish this spell was wiped out from everyone's memory in the world.
I hope I find this before fighting the red dragon. OH WAIT.
Both spells are learned without problems.
Note how Korgan is a few steps ahead of The Codex here. For some reason his movement speed is significantly higher. Since I did not give him any movement-enhancing gear, it must be berserker's class feat, I guess?
*link to Admiral Akbar clip here, do not, I repeat, do not forget to remove all the placeholder comments before posting the update*
Every time I am able to loot a chest I feel my life becoming a little richer.
I just love this spell's icon.
As it turns out, we did not have this one either.
Let's see how you do in combat, dwarf.
This one's for me.
Heads up, there's more.
One shot, one kill.
Two shots, two kills.
So far I'm way ahead of you, bro.
Lead the way.
It seems we're not alone in here.
It's good to have someone to take damage instead of me, for once.
Although you probably should consider not dying just yet.
One skeleton warrior is down, but the other one keeps hitting on Korgan.
Ok, you should fall back now.
Ok, you should come back now.
The rest of the undead are no problem at all.
Suddenly! A vampire... wait, a vampyre (?) appears and manages to almost kill Korgan before I can react (the attack started when I was reading Korgan's character sheet).
Well, this will set us back a bit.
After some deliberation, I decide to head to a temple and restore Korgan to his relative normality before proceeding.

The tomb was one of the cooler places in BG2, I thought. I liked the egypt-ish art deco, and the thematically-placed traps (like on the eyes of the mosaics and shit)

More raiding of the crypts&tombs than the new Tomb Raider [2013] delivered (just like Thi4f with stealing stuff) and I approve it. Not only because I've play it again after decade but also for the sake of treasure cleaning purpose.
Taking care of the illithids shouldn't be too long. Not having access to Chaotic Commands makes it more difficult, but wizards also have quite a few cheesy useful spells against mind flayers. If it comes to close combat, our hero's saving throws should help against mind blasts and his high Int will make his brain more resilient to being eaten.
