Hah, I didn't know he has a new blog.
However, I still think a game could be built that would at least make white players more aware of some common forms of racism suffered by minorities that aren’t apparent to us. For example, if you were playing a black character and went into the blacksmith’s shop, the blacksmith would take forever to serve you (and serve whites first even if they entered the shop after you), jack up prices, have you watched carefully by apprentices, and claim to be out of everything even when the shelves were fully stocked. Maybe the game could also incorporate a charm or friends spell that would temporarily alter a black avatar’s body, making him or her white. The sudden contrast might well bring it home to the player that there are forces at work that they’re ordinarily quite obvlious to.
In my second interview with Wadjet Eye Games' founder Dave Gilbert, we chat about his Blackwell series and the ins and outs of Steam for indie developers. Dave reveals some startling facts about his business: 98% of his revenue comes from Steam. Unfortunately, Steam's mysterious review process leaves much to be desired, particularly when your ability to support your family is at stake.
Another problem with the existing lineup (and almost every videogame-related thing on the internet!) is the myopic focus on Japanese games and spastic or “irreverent” commentary. Honestly, I don’t think I can stand another expletive-filled rant from some “angry nerd” on some obscure, poorly-localized Nintendo JRPG I neither know nor care about. I’d rather hear about the people behind the games–what they were like, what they were thinking, and so on. I also love exploring the “what if?” questions–what if, for instance, Nolan Bushnell had said “Yes!” to Apple, or if Atari had agreed to distribute the NES?
I'd be really glad to see Matt do a game history podcast - I think he could do it well. There is a serious lack of monocled gaming podcasts out there, as most of it is console or MMO focused, or ultra-mainstream.Matt wants to make a podcast, doesn't like weeaboos http://mattchat.us/?p=277
