Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy Codex Year of the Donut Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
(ground zeroes is better than like 90% of the missions in TPP :( )

Sad but true, even if I liked most of the missions. But the pacing / story was a lot better in just that one mission. I will brofist you in one day :P

A mediocre game that is passing for a 10/10 in the eyes of retards and the (sadly) still influential press needs to be taken down lest the disease spread.

It's not the worst game ever. I never said that. Get Kojima's tiny cock out of your mouth and spit out some actual arguments. It is a tremendously flawed game that maybe passes for a 7/10 on a good day.

I never tried any of the old MGS games.
Should/could i still give this a try or will i miss out to much?

How much are you going to play it for the story versus the game play?

If you're just in it for the game play, I'd start with this one. I played MGS1 and MGS2 back when they first came out and basically don't remember jack about either. But I'm still enjoying the hell out of MGS5 (I'm currently only at about 20% completion, though).

Hopefully the September 11th conspiracy theories are true and Kojima fiddles us one last time

Yeah, play them in release order MGS1 (best emulated tbh) -> MGS2 (hd collection is the best version) -> MGS3 (hd collection again)

Playing them out of order ruins a lot of setups - it's especially pertinent to play 1 before 2

Then when you complain about 2 I will call you a dum-dum
Yeah, I played 3 before 2 and I suspect that a number of things (meeting Ocelot and Granin) would have been a lot more powerful if you played 1 and 2 before 3.

Skipping out on the old MGS games would be a mistake since you'd be missing out on some of the most memorable boss fights that video games have ever been graced with.

Which one do you mean? Psycho Mantis? The Boss? The End? The Ladder?

Who are you even replying to? Or are you just trying to harvest ez brofists because anything remotely negative towards the game or Kojimbo gets fisted by sheeplebad? Also you did call it a terrible game multiple times in your other posts, going so far as to claim that Kojimbo should be ashamed his name is on it. You need to own up to the fact that you're laying down some pretty strong hyperbole in this thread, don't be surprised when people call you out for it.

Anyways, it's extremely easy to see why people who dislike MGS or are pleb journos would call it a 10/10. I can't even really blame them. In the context of something like Far Cry or Crysis 1, MGSV shit stomps those games obscenely hard. On the other hand:

MGS 2 > MGS 3 > Ground Zeroes > MGS 1 > Phantom Pain > MGS 4 > Twin Snakes >>>>>> MGS PW (I never played the original non solid MG1/2 )

Also Metal Gear Rising probably goes in between MGS 2 and 3 :yeah::yeah::yeah: (though they arent even really comparable due to being part of wildly different genres)

I think my last post asking this question was buried too quickly for folk to answer, so I'll beg everyone a pardon (not being sarcastic, genuine apology for repeated post) and ask again:

I'm thinking of getting MGSV, should I play MGS 1 to 4, or any selection thereof, first?

I'm not a storyfag. But I am an atmosphere fag, and the story of MGS games serves this better than maybe any other mainstream games. Will never forget some of the codec conversations with Naomi in MGS1. Couldn't tell you the details, but they set a tone. In fact, I prefer the storytelling method of MGS1 which if I'm remembering accurately was minimal cutscenes compared to the other games (maybe 2 was like this too, can't remember) and all the meat was in the codec conversations. I still consider it the most tightly written game in the series, the most iconic plot, and the most tasteful and judicious combination of the straightforward and the ridiculous, like a good comic book.

(I never played the original non solid MG1/2
Correct your shit.

tbh we've said numerous times in this thread to play the original MGSes in release order - like within the past few pages

Honestly, I'm having trouble getting the "mediocre=terrible" accusations too. To be fair, I'm not finished with the game (thanks for the open spoilers in the last page or two guys) and I've heard enough to know that the story leaves some things to be desired, but as far as gameplay goes, characterizing it as mediocre and therefore terrible doesn't seem to sit right.

Take AI for example: as much as it is lamentable that you're never pursued outside of bases or that individual soldiers are hardly tactical geniuses, the AI is hardly mediocre. In groups and within bases, it's actually quite responsive and, more importantly, fun to play against. Yes, it's exploitable, and yes, it could theoretically be better, but there isn't a lot of AI out there in games that isn't. Compared to what you'd see in, say, Far Cry 3 or 4, it's laughably better in every way that counts, and is probably closer to the original Crysis in what it does. That's not terrible, and not even mediocre. Even with legit criticism, it still seems to me that it's some of the best in its class.

Honestly, yes, compared to when I tried to force myself through Far Cry 3, I've already had more fun here than at any point in that game. I started that game out on its highest (patched in!) difficulty and still had to challenge myself by not using silenced weapons and especially not by sitting on a hill and sniping away to victory. That, to me, was a fundamentally mediocre experience - everything was technically functional but the design felt passionless and ultimately inconsequential. Here with MGSV we have a game that, for any other faults, at least has a fairly coherent concept and impressive attention to detail - which are really the essential things I've come to expect from Kojima's output, and something that I wished could be considered mediocre, because that'd mean they'd be present in more games.

I'll take Masahiro Ikariko (MG2, Snatcher, Gradius 2) and Tappi Iwase (MGS Theme, Contra III) over Harry-Gregson and all the new composers bar Norihiko Hibino every single time.

As for MGS5, modders could still fix refine the gameplay, right?

Is there anyone that hated the old games, possibly because of David Hayter's early '90s anime dub quality level voice, but found having a Hollywood brand name star in this one made the talking and story shit tolerable
