The best theory I've heard is that the government got involved and want the game to be as big as possible in the hopes that it'll spur on a bigger Turkish game dev industry.

I hadn't even considered that. Is it seriously a possibility? My assumption was that they just work very fucking slowly

Nah they just wanted Bannerlord delayed until 2019 so they can declare it the year of turkish rpgs when Stygian also gets released.

They just have no reason to release the game. Warband still sells and they work from a university with steady wages, they can release it at their own leisure. Besides I suspect all the bannerlord tease makes people buy warband as well anyway.

Government is not involved, rather it's just that after warband's success government allowed (small) funds to kickstart developer studios with one time grant.

Are they seriously still making money from Warband after all these years? At this point I figure the average sale is pennies on the dollar compared to the list price and the vast majority of people who actually wanted it probably own it already.

Bannerlord will either be the GOTYAY or the greatest disappointment since Duke Nukem Forever. It's not gonna be anything else except either one of these two options or a combination of them. The devblogs are about the most ridiculous shit, like rigging skirts for females, camel sculpting and horse colours.

Greeting warriors of Calradia!

In Mount & Blade games, no matter how cunning you are, eventually you will be forced to take to the field of battle in unfavourable conditions. However, in Bannerlord, battles aren’t a simple numbers game. With the right units and tactics, encounters that seem hopeless can be turned to your advantage. But, a wise commander wouldn’t throw away the lives of their troops as part of a learning experience; they would do everything in their power to increase their chances of success by improving their tactical knowhow.

The Custom Battle feature allows players to do just that -- in a safe, controlled, and highly customisable environment!

Custom Battles let players dive straight in and experience Bannerlord’s huge and epic battles without having to progress through the sandbox campaign. You might want to test out which troop type is most effective against those pesky Khuzait horse archers, or perhaps you would like to test some different methods of assault against that Aserai castle which has been causing you some issues in the sandbox campaign, or maybe you just have ten minutes to spare and want to get a quick Bannerlord fix. Whatever the case may be, you can create a custom battle or siege using your own parameters and go into action.

We have tried to make practically every aspect customisable so that you can play around to your heart’s content and thoroughly test different aspects of Bannerlord’s battle and siege systems. Each of the game’s factions are available to choose from, and players are given full control over the size and composition of each army. You can choose whether to attack or defend and which map the battle will be played on. You can even select which season you would like to play the battle in.

In siege, you have the ability to select the level of the castle (tiers 1-3), the strength of the walls, the siege engines available in the battle, as well as, the tactics which both the attacker and defender will use (including sallying out).

You can play as either the commander of an army or as a captain under the command of an AI leader. Commanders for each army are chosen from a selection of pre-made characters, each having their own personality and tactical skill level, so two separate battles using the same army compositions on the same map, but with different leaders, could play out completely differently.

Overall, we think that Custom Battle is both a fun and useful feature that players will find a number of different uses for.

I find the mention of seasons interesting. I wonder how much of an effect weather will have, like, will rain fuck with bowstrings like it does in real life? Will harsh weather effect my troops during a long siege?

Greetings warriors of Calradia!

Everything counts to make a video game an immersive experience, from the smallest details of the UI to the art design, the graphics, and of course the gameplay – but there is an aspect that tends to be unjustly overlooked in spite of it having capital importance. We’re talking about sound. Imagine you are in the middle of a fight. The rasp of swords being unsheathed, the crunch of sand under the hooves of the horses, the screams and grunts of pain of soldiers – all that can make you feel in the thick of a battle, and that makes sound a very powerful tool for video games. Today we talk with Ugurcan Orcun, our Audio Director, who will offer some insights on how Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord approaches this area and what he is doing for the game.

WHAT DO YOU NORMALLY DO DURING YOUR DAY?
As the only person handling all the audio tasks in the company, my daily duties vary a lot. I do sound design, game implementation, foley/field recording, voiceover recording, direction of music efforts, composing some extra music and most importantly, making sure every audible thing in the game world works as intended. So my ordinary day usually starts with playing the game itself and taking notes, then shuffling through my previous notes and feedback from the other teams to lay down a plan first. Sometimes I join other teams' daily meetings to get feedback from them directly.

To be honest, it feels like I'm working on three individual games. One is a strategy game, played on campaign map and settlements, where the player needs headroom to focus on ongoing events and decisions. One is a medieval combat game packed with action, where the player's emotions supported with solid music, good soundscape and satisfying fighting sounds. And the other one is Multiplayer, where we have slightly different definitions for fighting sounds, aimed for high-level play. Working on all of these is an ever-going, evolving process shaped by feedback, and there's always some other detail needs to be polished. As a veteran M&B player and modder myself, I really want to make Calradia more lively, realistic and enjoyable to listen to in Bannerlord.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST ABOUT BANNERLORD?
Since the day I first played Mount & Blade (who remembers Zendar?), I always fantasized about how living in Calradia would feel like. At one point, I found myself responsible for how it *sounds* like, and since that day, I'm working on fulfilling my childhood dream.

WHAT'S THE MOST DIFFICULT THING THAT YOU SOLVED SO FAR, DURING THE PRODUCTION OF BANNERLORD?
Playing literally THOUSANDS of sounds. In other games, it’s common practice to give a single "crowd" sound to groups of people or army formations. But in Bannerlord, where big battles are at the core of the game, we treat hundreds of NPCs as individuals. Handling these without burning up CPUs and while building up a satisfying ambience out of individual sounds was one of the hardest, but the most enjoyable work I've done.

WHAT DO YOU CURRENTLY WORK ON?
A few of the things I'm currently working on are: renewing UI sounds according to our new style, making our ambient sound systems practical to use for modders and recording some voiceovers.

WHAT FACTION DO YOU LIKE THE MOST IN BANNERLORD?
I think it's Battania. Since my childhood, I have had a great admiration for lush and rich environments. Battanian territory feels like home to me! Working on Battanian soundscapes are always enjoyable and fighting for the Battanian cause just feels right.

CAN THE PLAYER CHARACTER VOICE BE CHANGED? IF SO, FROM HOW MANY OPTIONS COULD THE PLAYER PICK? CAN IT BE DISABLED?
There will be plenty of voice types to choose from for both females and males when you’re creating your character. And there are even some variations for horses too! Currently, they can't be disabled (by design).

IS THE ENGINE ABLE TO DETECT WHICH SOUND TO BE PLAYED WHEN ONE IS WALKING ON DIFFERENT TEXTURES ON THE GROUND OR HITTING DIFFERENT TEXTURES WITH A SWORD?
Yes. This was partly possible in Warband too, like with footsteps on wooden surfaces. Now we have a Physics Materials system built into the engine with many different surface types which affects weapon impacts, physics sounds and projectile hits, as well as, footsteps. Modders could provide their own definitions of Physics Materials, of course.

IN WARBAND, I CAN HEAR PEOPLE FIGHTING WHILE I AM MORE THAN 200M FROM THEM. IS BANNERLORD DOING SOMETHING TO ENHANCE THIS EXPERIENCE?
Totally! It just got better. We built up a custom system of distancing where sounds are not only attenuated but also filtered and echoed, just like you would hear in real life. Achieving this even on low-end machines was tricky, but a distant battle sounds like it’s really distant!

Every time they show part of their game, it looks finished. These jackasses are just messing with us at this point.

My personal opinion is that they take a kebab break every hour and a half.

Then at 1:30pm, they have eaten so much kebab that they go to sleep.
This way they have only worked around 5 hours per day at max.

They have important things to do, so work starts at 10:00 and they also need to make the kebab themselves. I reckon TaleWorlds is a kebab grill AND a game studio. They have diversified their assets in a way that Blizzard could only dream of. Bannerlord will have it's own hot coffee mini-game/the most realistic economy, it will implement an old turkish trick passed down from father to son since the ottoman empire in - funding war by running a kebab grill chain. The only way to fund your whole nations armies to wage a war against the infidels is by running a perfected medieval kebab chain in Calradia.

Not sure about it. In the gamescom demo they had most of skills as placeholders. Some troops as placeholders. Also they don't know how to fix some issues like joining a minor faction.

On the plus side, Bannerlord's been worked on for so long that 6 core 7nm Ryzen CPU's from AMD are rumored to be the new budget option.

I expect even the cheapest chip will be as fast as the top end Intel i7's from a few years ago.

So you won't have to break the bank to enjoy Bannerlord in it's full glory or waste money on overpriced stuff on the used market.

I'll be swapping out my old 45nm Phenom II x4 955 for this, Phoenix Point and some emulation, eventually...

Greetings warriors of Calradia!

In Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord’s sandbox campaign, players are free to play the game however they like. And for some people, this might mean turning to a life of crime to facilitate their rise to power. But, just like in real life, there are consequences to your actions and crimes do not go unpunished... unless you position yourself to be above the law, of course.

The Crime Rating system keeps track of players’ misdeeds and determines how the game-world will respond to them. The aim of the system is to keep players in check, (especially for those of you who won’t suffer from the same mental anguish as Raskolnikov!), while offering a deeper experience that allows players to take a different path through the game.

Players are able to perform a variety of different actions that are considered to be illegal in Calradia. These range from petty crimes, such as smuggling in goods, to things that could be considered to be a little more serious, such as raiding a caravan and butchering its escort. Each kingdom keeps track of your crimes individually, so performing hostile actions in one territory won’t necessarily impact your gameplay in another.

The system assigns a numerical value to committed crimes based on the severity of the action that took place. There are three distinct brackets which criminals can fall into in the eyes of the law: mild, moderate, and severe.

Petty criminals can expect to see a minor level of disruption to their operations, but maybe not enough to dissuade them from committing further crimes. Criminals that fall into the moderate bracket will certainly start to feel the pinch, as they are barred from entering settlements in the territories where they are considered to be an outlaw. And, finally, individuals that are considered to be a great threat to the peace and stability of a realm will be in for a nasty shock if they are ever captured.

Criminals are expected to pay, quite literally, for their crimes. Fines are determined by the current Crime Rating of the character. However, although money can get you out of a lot of difficult situations, sometimes this won’t be enough and corporal punishment will be carried out. As for severe criminals that can’t afford to pay for their crimes, they are introduced to the judicial executioner, who helps them to shuffle off this mortal coil.

If you are a vassal of the kingdom where you have committed crimes, you may be able to exert some influence to have the charges dropped, however, your fellow lords might see this as a dishonourable action which can adversely affect your relations with them. If you are the ruler of the faction, then congratulations, you just played yourself! You can ignore the charges for as long as you like. After all, who will enforce them? However, the happiness and prosperity of your kingdom will take a hit. Oh, and your honourable lords will hate you!

For those of you who are still determined to explore the dark side of human nature, then we have some good news! Players will have a number of tricks up their sleeve which will help them negate some of the negative aspects of being an outlaw. They are able to employ bribes to have guards turn a blind eye when they visit a settlement or keep (think of it as putting them on the payroll). They can also adopt a disguise to attempt to sneak into a settlement, however, they shouldn’t expect to be allowed to visit the lord’s hall or enter into any tournaments taking place in the settlement.

It's cool, but how do people even know you committed a crime if you never get caught? Okay, I butchered a entire caravan in a secluded area, who knows I did it? If none of them escape, when I am gone they will only find the corpses and if I sell the loot multiple towns over no one could suspect me of doing it.

I don't like how that artwork looks like; hopefully they'll replace it with a more obscure one, cause I think the current one makes a character look gay.

All I want is the ability to arrange my troops on the battlefield from overheard before the battle starts. Having all of my troops in one giant group and trying to set up formations and such in 30 seconds is a pain.
Archers go here, swordsmen go here, one cavalry here and another there. Done.

All I want is to be able to kill villagers with my weapons whenever I am roaming the town/village.

I don't want to angrily swing my sword against a superhuman populace that don't feel anything.
