Sure, but first "someone" must decide which games are these quality building blocks. I've noticed people have different opinions about that too.The classics (or canon) of a given discipline isn't about "stuff I deeply enjoy" nor "stuff I consider to be great from a rather objective viewpoint."How will I know if a game is a classic if I haven't played it?
Classics exist in a vacuum, regardless of the individual player's preferences or the item's current popularity. Classics are the quality building blocks upon which the medium has been built throughout the years, though some time perspective is needed even in a relatively young domain such as CRPGs.
RPG classics ought to transcend their time and sub-genre. 'Rogue' is a classic even if I could totally see why even the biggest roguelike fans wouldn't bother playing it beyond 3-4 hours nowadays. Similarly, 'Morrowind' is another RPG classic despite being a game that may not appeal at all to RPG purists who aren't too fond of action-RPGs.
Wizardry IV, Dungeon Master, Ultima VII, The Stygian Abyss, the Gold Box games, and Nethack: Too Simplistic to Be GoodI ain't playing nothing before '97 (except Dark Sun and Darklands).
Yeah I'm sure your ancient piece of shit is amazing, but it's all way, way too simplistic to be good.
I just played AND beat this one not too long ago. It's actually very short and fairly easy. At least the re-released version is easy, or I am just that good!I can't ask anyone to go back and play The Bard's Tale: Tales of the Unknown these days
Very short, and fairly easy. Are you talking about the current version, or the legacy hand drawn map/don't stay out at night at 1st level/no saves everywhere version?I just played AND beat this one not too long ago. I guess you're not a big fan of The Black Gate. The combat is worse, the game world by virtue of being continuous feels smaller, and the inventory is a nightmare to navigate.
Note that the game contains somewhat important interaction through keystrokes the manual didn't explain - namelyUltima V: Warriors of Destiny
I got stuck/lost partway through a couple of years back, and just haven't been in the mood to travel around looking for clues I might have missed.
Probably not c64 version on authentic hardware. Ah! Those were the days. Just like my might & magic 1-2 days on the c64. I posted mm1 maps. Not sure where my mm2 maps were.Very short, and fairly easy. -Dragon Age 2: Too complicated gameplay, also romances are so well done that I always quit the game crying because of feelings.
No and that is despite the game being my first Ultima. The only thing I like about Black Gate is the leveling up mechanic which ironically is the best in the series, accruing skill points and finding a relevant trader.I guess you're not a big fan of The Black Gate. The combat is worse, the game world by virtue of being continuous feels smaller, and the inventory is a nightmare to navigate.
Your kid should be taken away for letting him play that piece of shit.-Dragon Age 2: Too complicated gameplay, also romances are so well done that I always quit the game crying because of feelings.
It always amuses me that my son, who was around 6 or 7 at the time and had never touched an RPG, was able to complete Dragon Age 2 with little difficulty or effort.
Pretty simple explanation for me as to why. In 2001 I was overseas getting ready to shoot Iraqis for a few years on and off, came back, started life etc. Didn't actually build or own my first gaming pc until 2014 or so. Console fag with an appreciation for whatever high spots they offered.- Gothic and I never will beat it since, unfortunately, i can't really play games requiring two hands anymore. Fortunately I never liked action rpgs much
You always masturbating while playing or what?
Icewind Dale 2 - I didn't know there was a second one, I beat the first game, had fun
I would argue that the sequel isn't really that good and is no real classic. After playing the first IW, you can just move on.
Any of the Gothics- Never played them. Enjoyed Risen 1 and 2 and Elex, will eventually get around to em
Wait, you played both Risen AND Elex, but never the Gothics!? That's really fucking strange.
Ultima 7, any version. Hated the perspective
Oh God, thank you! I thought I was the only peep on the Codex who kept quitting the game because of the damn perspective. I just....I can't stand looking at it.
1. Deus Ex - I liked the beginning and it was atmospheric, but I dropped it at some point because it felt too actiony and I'm not into that much into the Matrix.
This is a post that belongs in the "trigger the Codex with a statement" thread, 'cause I sure am triggered right now.
agreed. I think it is a very essential part of those gamesHand mapping and notes is an epic way of playing.
thats too bad, this game rules. Although if I played it today, id totally agree the combat is a real slog.Magic Candle - After finishing the second dungeon i got out of steam for this.
