I ain't playing nothing before '97 (except Dark Sun and Darklands).
Yeah I'm sure your ancient piece of shit is amazing, but it's all way, way too simplistic to be good.

How will I know if a game is a classic if I haven't played it?
The classics (or canon) of a given discipline isn't about "stuff I deeply enjoy" nor "stuff I consider to be great from a rather objective viewpoint."

Classics exist in a vacuum, regardless of the individual player's preferences or the item's current popularity. Classics are the quality building blocks upon which the medium has been built throughout the years, though some time perspective is needed even in a relatively young domain such as CRPGs.

RPG classics ought to transcend their time and sub-genre. 'Rogue' is a classic even if I could totally see why even the biggest roguelike fans wouldn't bother playing it beyond 3-4 hours nowadays. Similarly, 'Morrowind' is another RPG classic despite being a game that may not appeal at all to RPG purists who aren't too fond of action-RPGs.
Sure, but first "someone" must decide which games are these quality building blocks. I've noticed people have different opinions about that too.

Uurtuk : The Desolation - scheduled as 4th game of 2025

Underrail - maybe in 2026

Age of Decadence - never - got bundled with Dungeon Rats , played shorter game first , any attempt to engage with it makes me rather want to replay Dungeon Rats

0. Mass Effect trilogy (getting close to finishing ME2).
1. Fallout: New Vegas (someone release a remastered version so my eyes don't bleed for the whole game plz).
2. Age of Decadence (is it shit?)
3. Kingdom Come: Deliverance (I don't know why I haven't played it yet. Should I?)

I don't like real-time blobbers, but I really need to sit down and play through this one.
Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny
I got stuck/lost partway through a couple of years back, and just haven't been in the mood to travel around looking for clues I might have missed. I hope to finish this one in 2025.
Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant
I need to finish Bane of the Cosmic Forge first.

I have never touched any of the Ultimas, nor have I ever been the slightest bit interested. I don't know the first thing about them.

I have yet to beat Arcanum but i'm actually much further along right now than I have ever been, and I will surely complete this run. It's great, give it a chance. It's a world that deserves to live again.

Underrail, Solasta, Pathfinder, never been interested. I tried Pathfinder a few times and never got far.

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
This may as well be the "trigger the codex" thread, as it's hard to read. But, I'll admit, I can't ask anyone to go back and play The Bard's Tale: Tales of the Unknown these days, the world has moved on from games of that ilk. It would be too brutal. HOWEVER folks bitching about Dark Sun, Ultima VII, and Dungeon Master? Come on - the graphics are still good enough!

For my 3, I'll say the following:
Ultima V: the only Ultima I've never beat including Underworlds. I'll admit I'm saving this game for a dark spot in my life - so it takes on a weird significance
Wizardry VI: The only Wizardry I am interested in that I haven't even started. No, I didn't finish them all, I just hold Wiz 6-8 in high regard.
Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager - I need to finish this game, but have a LOT of stability problems with almost all versions.

There are also other things I need to do - play evil playthroughs of Arcanum, Mask of the Betrayer, and all kinds of games. But that's not relative.

I just played AND beat this one not too long ago. It's actually very short and fairly easy. At least the re-released version is easy, or I am just that good!

Very short, and fairly easy. Are you talking about the current version, or the legacy hand drawn map/don't stay out at night at 1st level/no saves everywhere version?

The combat is worse, the game world by virtue of being continuous feels smaller, and the inventory is a nightmare to navigate.
I guess you're not a big fan of The Black Gate.

Note that the game contains somewhat important interaction through keystrokes the manual didn't explain - namely
pressing numeric keys when adjacent to some instrument plays music - it's hard to notice, especially when playing the version without a soundtrack

Planescape: Torment - Tried and dropped, twice. I don't know if it gets better at some point, but the first 2-3 hours are a fucking boring slog, which left me with no desire to return to it. I liked all other infinity engine games more, especially with mods.
Arx Fatalis - Almost finished it, but got distracted at some point. I think I switched to Gothic 2 and forgot about it, but my memory is a bit murky. I am considering to return to it one day.
Morrowind - Large lifeless open world, filled with generic npcs. The only saving grace are the environments and art design, but that is not enough to overcome my general aversion to this kind of open world garbage.

Probably not c64 version on authentic hardware. Ah! Those were the days. Just like my might & magic 1-2 days on the c64. I posted mm1 maps. Not sure where my mm2 maps were.

Hand mapping and notes is an epic way of playing.

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy Bubbles In Memoria
Here's 3 that I'm always guild tripping myself about:
Dark Sun: Wage of the Ravager Shattered Lands
Return to Krondor
Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny (+ rest of that series)

-Dragon Age 2: Too complicated gameplay, also romances are so well done that I always quit the game crying because of feelings.

It always amuses me that my son, who was around 6 or 7 at the time and had never touched an RPG, was able to complete Dragon Age 2 with little difficulty or effort.

No and that is despite the game being my first Ultima. The only thing I like about Black Gate is the leveling up mechanic which ironically is the best in the series, accruing skill points and finding a relevant trader.

Your kid should be taken away for letting him play that piece of shit.

Ultima Underworld
I kept running into game breaking glitches, and the last one was nearly at the end of the game.
Might and Magic I
I really wasn't prepared for the Wizardry style of gameplay it had at the time, since I was firmly in the 6/7/8 camp, even if I liked 3/4/5.
Darklands
I like the idea of the game, but the combat in this is awful, even for RTwP. (IIRC)

- Gothic and I never will beat it since, unfortunately, i can't really play games requiring two hands anymore. Fortunately I never liked action rpgs much

You always masturbating while playing or what?

Icewind Dale 2 - I didn't know there was a second one, I beat the first game, had fun

I would argue that the sequel isn't really that good and is no real classic. After playing the first IW, you can just move on.

Any of the Gothics- Never played them. Enjoyed Risen 1 and 2 and Elex, will eventually get around to em

Wait, you played both Risen AND Elex, but never the Gothics!? That's really fucking strange.

Ultima 7, any version. Hated the perspective

Oh God, thank you! I thought I was the only peep on the Codex who kept quitting the game because of the damn perspective. I just....I can't stand looking at it.

1. Deus Ex - I liked the beginning and it was atmospheric, but I dropped it at some point because it felt too actiony and I'm not into that much into the Matrix.

This is a post that belongs in the "trigger the Codex with a statement" thread, 'cause I sure am triggered right now.
Pretty simple explanation for me as to why. In 2001 I was overseas getting ready to shoot Iraqis for a few years on and off, came back, started life etc. Didn't actually build or own my first gaming pc until 2014 or so. Console fag with an appreciation for whatever high spots they offered.

Still got to experience some decent stuff growing up, things like Ultima 4-6, Buck Rogers, Rings of Power, Shadowrun (genesis) and a few others back in the day. Just never had a pc as a kid because we never needed one.

Missed a fair amount of the pc games when they dropped but circled back over the years and have enjoyed quite a few, Gothic is on the list but gaming time is limited with wife, kids, job stuff.

Deus Ex - A lot has been written about this supposedly great game, well so far i couldn't bring myself to advance further in the game due to it being a 3d game, too reminiscent of an ego shooter i guess. I think i only completed the first two scenarios (?) or so, though i do like the rpg elements.

Dark Heart of Uukrul - Party is probably halfway through the game? But again i somehow lost interest while venturing those mazes. At least my current party is doing pretty good compared to my previous one where there would be a constant loop of losing all members except one and then replacing the fallen ones with newer ones at the guild, but who weren't as high level as the fallen ones....

Magic Candle - After finishing the second dungeon i got out of steam for this. The fights began to feel repetitive, and it also felt that my characters already reached a prime in regards to their stats and items. Apparently a lot of other people also quit midway which is kind of sad because the way adventuring and rpg gaming get fused together makes for an interesting game. Also the way your chars advance in levels/stats should be incorporated in more games.

Quite a few in my backlog, but if I were to choose 3 that I regret not finishing yet, these would be Ultima V, Darklands and Pool of Radiance. (will probably get around playing them during the summer)

Eye of the Beholder.

Dungeon Master.

Dark Heart of Uukrul.

I've played these and found them very good, I just didn't have the energy to push through to the end. Come to think of it, I have a hard time finishing ANY game regardless of how good it is, especially this year.

Skyrim - RPG so dilluted it's boring. Diffculty setting are bad - you either steamroll with 2h axe (but combat is terrible) or deal with damage sponges. No good rewards in the beginning due to level scalling.

Ravenloft - Stone Prophet - hoarded items from the dungeons and stashed them on the surface. Worked in Strahd's Possession, but in Stone Prophet some items started disappearing. Imagine my surprise, after luring one ancient mummy boss to another after many attempts, to find that there's no Scroll of Return behind (former) Wall of Ra...

Ultima 7 - too much freedom overwhelmed me, constant hunger (already have/had that issue in real life, no need videogames for reminder) and lack of progress. Tried few times and same results. Refuse to use guides because what's the point.
