Both Buck Rogers games (I'll count that as 1)

Daggerfall

Wizardry 4

Honestly, there are many more but some I would just play again and again and again. How many times can you play Ultima 0-5? The gold box series? Questron series & Legacy of Ancients/Legend of Blacksilver? Wizardry 1-3?

Not enough.... addiction and alts. And don't get me started about HOMM 1-4, DOOM+mods, and Diablo 1-2. Good friggin lord. Oh, maybe toss in some Duke 3D or Blood? Hmmm.... just to get out of RPG mode... but look an RPG to shoot shit. It don't stop.

1. Deus Ex - I liked the beginning and it was atmospheric, but I dropped it at some point because it felt too actiony and I'm not into that much into the Matrix. Will give it another run later since plenty of time has passed since the last try.

2. Temple of Elemental Evil - great combat and lovely graphics. However, the turns started getting prohibitively long at some point towards the late midgame, and I got fed up.

3. Mask of the Betrayer - dropped early on despite the good story because I had a buggy pirated version. Excellent atmosphere, kind of reminded me of GURPS Russia book.

I haven't tried quite a lot of older classics like Wizardry 7 or Realms of Arkania, but I probably will not do it. I like Wizardry 8 but generally I am not into blobbers or puzzle-solving, although it is enjoyable to have parties. Likewise for Ultima Underworld which sounds wonderful but has the early 90s 3D which I found almost impossible to play even back then at a physical level (e.g. Wolfenstein and Doom are headache-inducing).

How will I know if a game is a classic if I haven't played it?
The classics (or canon) of a given discipline isn't about "stuff I deeply enjoy" nor "stuff I consider to be great from a rather objective viewpoint."

Classics exist in a vacuum, regardless of the individual player's preferences or the item's current popularity. Classics are the quality building blocks upon which the medium has been built throughout the years, though some time perspective is needed even in a relatively young domain such as CRPGs.

RPG classics ought to transcend their time and sub-genre. 'Rogue' is a classic even if I could totally see why even the biggest roguelike fans wouldn't bother playing it beyond 3-4 hours nowadays. Similarly, 'Morrowind' is another RPG classic despite being a game that may not appeal at all to RPG purists who aren't too fond of action-RPGs.

Diablo 2 - felt too exploitative of player compulsions, even on release.

Ultima Underworld 2 - never played 1, never got past CRT filters for 2. Brings shame to the agris clan.

Might & Magic: World of Xeen. My
body wasn’t ready.

System Shock 1 - this game is really hard for me to get through, also doesn't help that it didn't age all that well (unlike the second game which aged gracefully over the years)
If you are playing the original enhanced edition, the game can be pretty labyrinthine and confusing at times.
Regularly consult your map and also listen to the numerous voice mails and datapads you find in order to get clues to progress further.
If you are confident you can do it, then play on Hard, where there is a time limit on beating the game.

As for "classics" I have not beaten - Gothic 1 and 2.

-Fallout 3: I got too immersed in the open world and started rping as a regular joe citizen of the wastes doing mundane stuff, never got to move the plot, got a save going on since release.
-Dragon Age 2: Too complicated gameplay, also romances are so well done that I always quit the game crying because of feelings.
-Planescape Torment: I finished the long ass tutorial where you get to Fortress of Regrets and meet Transcendent One, but a bug prevented me to get to the actual gameplay and popped the credits instead.

- Gothic and I never will beat it since, unfortunately, i can't really play games requiring two hands anymore. Fortunately I never liked action rpgs much

You always masturbating while playing or what?

Icewind Dale 2 - I didn't know there was a second one, I beat the first game, had fun

I would argue that the sequel isn't really that good and is no real classic. After playing the first IW, you can just move on.

Any of the Gothics- Never played them. Enjoyed Risen 1 and 2 and Elex, will eventually get around to em

Wait, you played both Risen AND Elex, but never the Gothics!? That's really fucking strange.

Ultima 7, any version. Hated the perspective

Oh God, thank you! I thought I was the only peep on the Codex who kept quitting the game because of the damn perspective. I just....I can't stand looking at it.

This is a post that belongs in the "trigger the Codex with a statement" thread, 'cause I sure am triggered right now.

  • Baldur's Gate 1 - I like part 2 a lot and beat almost all other Infinity Engine games but BG1 always feels like I am lost in the woods without any clue what to do next. And the game bombards me with possible group members which gets overwhelming very quickly
  • Arcanum - I like the atmosphere but the combat is very clunky. I have to give this another try some time
  • Deus Ex - I played all other Deus Ex games but part one always manages to lose me since every level takes forever to finish. It might be a classic but the pacing of this game is atrocious. Thief II feels like Unreal Tournament in comparison

Some games that I have played but had to quit for some reason:

Dragon Age: Origins - It started well, but somewhere i got bored of cuddling with the companions. I really didn't care about their personal issues and dramas.

Planescape: Torment - I played it when I didn't know English too well. And it was difficult because of this. By the time i got to it I had finished rest of Black Isle bangers.

Diablo 2 (&LOD) - despite being a huge Diablo fan at the time, i don't believe I have ever finished the base game. Always have restarted my chars for one reason or another.

  • I never finished Witcher 1. Great atmosphere. I didn't care for much else. I fizzled out in Chapter 3 at the Trade Quarter.
  • System Shock 1 or 2
  • Theif 1 & 2
Systems Shocks and Thief series, no idea why I never finished. It was ages ago. I'm guessing something technical. I really should.

No you... you... you... insensitive member of society! I had a serious stroke a few years back, right half of my body almost completely paralyzed at first. I'm much better now but playing action games requiring two hands is out of the question. I could play Diablo 2 clones if i wanted. They can be played with a mouse only (one with a couple of additional buttons) - but that's about it. Fortunately for me I never liked action-rpgs much in the first place. There is one big exception (sort off, not really a crpg but close), Mount and Blade. I'll never play that again or check the sequel, which is sad but what you can do.

Yeah, I figured it was something serious like that, but I couldn't help myself in making the joke. How do you handle typing? Do you use both hands for that?

Planescape Torment - Way too much combat for a story-focused game. It's also weirdly broken for me - when I didn't mod it, it was unstable because way too many unpatched bugs, when I modded it, used the unofficial patch then the bloat made it unstable. I just don't have the patience to try for a third time, I just watch playthroughs.

Daggerfall - Played a lot, one of my favorite RPGs of all time, just can't beat the main questline. The dungeons are way too fucking annoying.

Wizardry 8 - Played a lot, tried a bunch of parties, couldn't get to the end of it. Slow combat really kills the game for me, and then the amount of trash mobs...

1) Fallout - Yes, Fallout. I played a bunch of it and hit a point where I kept getting my ass handed to me in combat because I built my character wrong. My plan's to go back and start over with a new char, but just ain't got around to it yet.

2) Arx Fatalis - Was going great, love the game, but I found myself running around looking for stakes to prep for this undead dungeon and eventually got distracted with other stuff (that tends to happen). Now it's been so long I gotta work up the patience to learn everything I forgot all over again when I eventually return to it.

3) System Shock 2 - I'm chicken.

I will limit my list to games I abandoned.
Baldur's Gate 2 Throne of Bhaal: What sets Baldur's Gate 2 above so many other RTWP RPGs is having a large nonlinear world not gatekept by quest progression. Once you leave Chateau Irenicus you are free to explore the world at your pace completing tons of quest with some being unique to your part composition including the player class. Despite these openness Baldur's Gate 2 is not merciless. Coming to a situation prepared or knowing the intricacies of the underlying system is a must to conquering content early on. Throne of Bhaal throws all of out for a linear boss rush mode. After killing the third Bhaalspawn I was just tired of the nonstop combat and dropped the game.

Morrowind: I first played the game years ago via OpenMW as a sword sorcerer. This game displays Bethesda's inability to design a lively game world. Sure the world building is great and the variety of locales is neat but everything feels abandoned. Gothic 2 came out around the same time and shows how you can do so much with so little, comparatively speaking that is.

Ultima 6: Ultima 5 is one of my favorite RPGs so seeing how Origin decided to massively depart from that game in well just about every aspect was not a good first impression. The combat is worse, the game world by virtue of being continuous feels smaller, and the inventory is a nightmare to navigate.
