I bought a Switch last week - here's my short and preliminary review.
To clarify; I have a PS4 Pro and a good gaming laptop. Got interested in the switch because i) some games looked cool (Zelda, Mario Odyssey, Octopath) and ii) I travel around a lot and want something I can play while on the train/plane.
My first impression was that this is a pretty amazing concept that works great in practice. It's so nice to be able to play Zelda on my big tv with a good controller. Then leave the house and play a game of Mario Kart against a friend while sitting in the train. I just love the design of this thing. Some games work great in portable mode (Mario kart, Mario odyssey, hollow knight, Octopath demo), Zelda works but I vastly prefer to play that on a big screen tv.
On the technical specifications, the screen and the battery; it all works fine but it would have been great to see some more higher end performance/components. The screen is ok but I would prefer to pay a bit extra to have a screen with no or thin bezels (more screen real estate) with a more high end image quality. The battery lasts around 3 hours when playing a demanding game, I use a small power bank which adds another 5 hours to that playtime. For me this is more than enough but you can simply add a bigger power bank if you really need to play more than 8 hours. The graphical/processing power is pretty basic compared to even the normal PS 4. I have mixed feelings about this. The Switch provides more evidence that good games are 99% about creativity, gameplay and artstyle -pure graphic porn just adds so little to actual enjoyment of a game. However, playing Zelda I did feel that it could be even more impressive if there was some more power in the Switch - just adding more wildlife, vegetation, NPCs etc.
On the games; I was a bit surprised to notice that Nintendo games are much less declined than Playstation/Xbox games. Sure, Zelda is not a hardcore RPG but at least it's all about the gameplay without too many obvious concessions. I have gotten so sick of watching endless cutscenes/diologues which in the end are mostly poorly written and take you out of the actual game. In contrast, Zelda (but also the Mario games, super smash etc) just throws you in the game with not too much explanation and lets you figure it out along the way. Plus, it is a proper open world, sandbox game which feels much less like a theme park than say Skyrim.
Will not talk about Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart. For me these are just good fun to do on the side, when sitting in the train etc. Also Super Smash I'm really looking forward to to play on the side.
As for other RPGs; Octopath Travellers seems promising from what I played but will reserve judgement on that until its out. Xenoblade Chronicles apparently is good but doesn't appeal to me at all. Dragonquest XI no clue, looks too colorful for me so far.
Right now that's about it - not much else I'm stoked about. Perhaps this MTS 5 game but havent seen anything yet. So yes, the number of actually good games is pretty limited.
To sum up; great concept, great design, some amazing exclusives (but not too many good games overall). Technical specifications and quality of the screen are a bit underwhelming. Going forward I hope Nintendo reiterates on this concept and introduces a Switch ''Pro'' down the road with substantially better specs/hardware.
