Sony and Microsoft seem to have no idea what they’re doing. They should have had answers to the Switch back when they were announcing the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Anyone with a brain could’ve seen the 2017 Switch would dominate them since it was already dominating the more powerful PS4. But Sony and Microsoft just kept on truckin’ like it was the Wii/Wii U days where they’d say Nintendo wasn’t actually competition because they’re doing their own little weird thing over there. I still can’t believe Sony didn’t parlay their dominance of the market with the PS4 into a handheld PS4 and just hold off on the PS5 until like 2024/2025; there should have been a big gear shift on their part when the Switch started beating them.
What's funny to me is that it didn't cause any ripples in the console market, but it created waves in the PC hardware space. And
then M$ and Sony were like: Oh... maybe we should do that thing.
It is funny that fucking Valve of all companies was the first to even try and have an answer to the Switch. After the failure of their Steam Box a few years before, I’d imagine Valve saw the Switch pulling their Steam indie business away and figured that was the way to go if they want to get into the console business...which Valve very much seems to want to do.
Although I doubt Microsoft and Sony seemingly changing their tune had much to do with the waves it made it the PC space. It’s just this far out now you can’t look at the numbers and pretend Nintendo isn’t competition anymore, they’re selling more systems, and they’re selling way more games. They’re own internal numbers, like three quarters of PS5 owners play on Performance mode instead of Fidelity mode probably also tell them they fucked up and backed the wrong horse.
You also got to imagine that Microsoft and Sony are looking at the Switch like: Nintendo is making lower budget games than us, and still outselling use...what the fuck? The best selling Sony PS4 game is Spider-Man, seems to be the best selling PS4 game there’s specific numbers on... got out sold by Super Mario Party. And Super Mario Party is the 9th best selling game on the Switch. And you damn well fucking know Nintendo didn’t spend anywhere close to what Sony did on their Spider-Man game making Super Mario Party for the fuckin’ Switch. That Spider-Man game cost like $90 million to make according to that leak. Spider-Man more than made its money, it those returns weren’t what Nintendo go making a Switch Mario Party game.
