.
Preview, and for those who say there is no 'gameplay', it already features more gameplay elements than minecraft for example.
. Both space and planet gameplay will pit you against hostile lifeforms and unforgiving environmental obstacles, including black holes, pirates, sentinels, and other forms of aggressive aliens
How you decide to handle these situations is up to you, and depending on your actions, there will be consequences to deal with. For instance, if you see pirates attacking a trade convoy, you can decide to help the convoy or join the pirates in the attack. Naturally, you’re going to anger whichever faction you go up against, and, chances are, that group will remember your actions and repay you accordingly.
Using the resources you’ve gathered will allow you to upgrade numerous components of your ship, including: Cargo Space, Cloaking Devices, Weapons Systems, Engines, Hull, Hyperdrive, Shielding, and Wings. Similarly, fuel will be a resource needed to travel to other systems and will share space in your cargo hold.
To defend yourself (or go on the offensive), you’ll be able to craft upgrades for your ship and pilot. Lasers and grenades are two of the known weapon systems that will be offered to players. Grenades, it seems, will also allow players to blow out chunks of earth which could give access to subterranean areas on planets.
At some point during your experience, chances are you’ll want to get a completely new ship. While all varieties are on the smaller, single pilot side, there are four known varieties to choose from: Traders, Explorers, Science, and Fighter craft. Obviously, depending on your goals and playstyle you’ll want to pick a ship that fits your mindset.
If you find yourself outgunned in a space battle, you’ll “eject” and respawn in your ships life pod. You will retain your units (currency), as well as any upgrades you’ve amassed, however, say farewell to your ship. When you die in space, you’ll have to navigate to a new planet or, if you’re lucky, a nearby space station, and then you’ll need to begin the path to acquiring a new ship.
So, other than the obvious aggressive pirate or alien shooting you in the face, how else can you die? Well, in space I would imagine flying too close to a black hole would probably be a bad idea. Likewise, reckless flying will probably cost you dearly. Planet side, there will be hostile environments to deal with such as extreme heat, subzero temperatures, and toxic atmospheres. If you don’t upgrade or manage your suit properly, you could quickly find yourself freezing to death on Hoth-knock-off-2.0.
while planets will vary in size and biome, it would probably take a single player months (if not years) to fully explore a single planet on foot.
The closer you get to the center of the universe, the more difficult the game becomes. Aliens become more hostile, lush worlds fewer and further in between, and other obstacles will start to show themselves as you near your journey’s completion.
However, even with the new information available, Hello Games continues to be fairly tight-lipped about the game’s features. It’s quite possible some major aspect of the game is still under wraps, just waiting to be unleashed.

Getting better and better

David Braben must be really pissed off. He made the mistake of trying to explain his game instead of spouting buzzwords and marketing bullshit. I guess that's what a science degree buys you.
Maybe if he made a game and not a truck sim in space it would be worth it.
Game you can play forever
That doesn't mean shit. Is there a game you can't play forever?

Okay, so what's they game in No Man's Sky? After reading the previews I still don't get it.
I get the feeling Makabb is completely ignorant
100% of the mmos. a whole lot of modern games with mandatory servers.Game you can play forever

As someone with the "Bethesdard" tag, I assume you know games like Skyrim. Which will deliver radiant quests for you, you will never run out and can play it forever. "Technically".This game is autism materialised, by saying that you can play it forever they mean that you can play it forever and still not finish it. Technicaly there is no other game that you can play forever.

my favourite being the Championship/Football Manager series,
but the game mechanics (i.e. the thing that gives actual longevity to games,
so expect people to be bored out of their minds a day or two after purchase

so "forever" is quite a promise nowadays.

‘No Man’s Sky’ is the ultimate role-playing game
No Man’s Sky is an RPG in the most basic sense of the term — you get to decide what role you want to play in this vast universe.

Hello Games has invented an algorithm that scans the bone structure of an animal and combines them with different heads, feet and necks from other species. After that, the system alters the bone structure so that every animal we've seen so far looks like it was designed by hand. Even the sound of their voice matches the volume of their body. And they are not just there for show: they genuinely appear to live their own lives.
There are thousands variations of ships – all procedurally generated.
We don't just shoot other ships: we have to balance energy power for shields and lasers. Lasers are great tools to melt down enemy shields, proton torpedoes are slow, but make one hell of an impact. They are great against freighters, in case you choose a career as space pirate.
There's an intergalactic force called Sentinels who will sometimes hunt down players who cause too much mayhem, such as breaking into alien factories to steal blueprints or killing too many dinosaur-like creatures.
"They're these self-replicating drones that were put there by this ancient forerunner race that did it with good intentions to protect planets," said Murray. "They're gotten a little bit out of control. It's questionable in the game whether they're good guys or bad guys."
The way in which time passes in the "No Man's Sky" is also determined by developers' algorithms because planets uniquely rotate, resulting in different day and night cycles.
"We display a 24-hour clock right now, which shouldn't be there," said a visibly conflicted Murray. "Every time I've tried to change that, it just breaks people's brains."
"It will probably take hundreds and hundreds of hours to reach the center of the universe
