What does the term procedurally generated even mean anymore? If I did a thing that selects from a table of three options is that procedural generation?

That's what it technically means but we all know in practice it is just going to be randomness.

LS you should be able to understand that procedural is not random.

random = dice roll

procedural = made out of a ruleset

Minecraft in space without crafting but with gameplay and better survival.

I'm not saying that procedural means random. I'm saying that for all intended purposes that's what it amounts to in those games. No Man's Sky is basically Elite with cutesy planets and creatures a la Spore. You are not going to see any "possibilities" flowing out of any "ruleset", certainly none pertaining to gameplay. Daggerfall too is basically just lol random, but that game at least had some interesting gameplay features. The character development system, while ludicrously exploitable, was still interesting and fun to play around with, and the random generated dungeons, while often crude, were at least complex and difficult to get around in, sometimes requiring you to use many of the tools at your disposal to the fullest, which made the game Looking Glass like, sort of like Ultima Underworld with randomly generated shit.

By comparison, what do you do in No Man's Sky, exactly?

If you got 33 mins watch this, and you will know that you do

It is a survival game in space where the goal is to get to the center of the universe.

Means you make a solo game like freelancer with lets say 20 hours of content ,nothing extraordinary and shallow combat . Cut it in pieces, you now have several POI(points of interests), an algorithm will generate an universe copy pasting planets changing the colors, and spreading/cloning those POI all over the place. So now you explore a vast universe spending dozen of hours seeing the same shit until you find all the content . Reach the center and realize theres nothing more and the journey was boring.

It means something complex that's developed out of simple rules.

e.g.

486px-Serpinski_Lsystem.svg.png

I think I'm getting it now.

Because seeing a triangle is by itself to remarkable and exciting - we need of course to see all 10^686 permutations of possible triangles within triangles as well

I absolutely get what they are doing. But a planet is not just a mathematical function and it can never be generated just like that. Because it is the result of billions of years and events only a Monte Carlo simulation results in a believable world and this is not possible without a lot computation.

and this is what they are doing, that's why the graphics are basic, because the computation goes into simulation.

This is why the minimal requirements are 8gb of ram.

Over there.
Just wanted to get a line in on what'll probably end up being 2 more pages of sperging over what is and isn't procedural.

Fortunately it's almost out, so we will never again listen news about this shit and it will be forgotten by everybody.
