Now that the dust has settled, how do we make RPGs fun again?

There are plenty of toolsets (usually older) to fiddle with and there are a few modern ones being worked on today. One could also revisit toolsets and maybe fix them.

You have to actually have people who want to build a game or adventure within those toolsets though. People are lazy and only a few are inspired enough to actually make something. And then, how good/bad is that creation?

And since we are here... why 90% of medieval fantasy rips off the ENGLISH or French medieval ages? Because of Tolkien?
For the same reason you're typing this in English.
You're typing this in english because english is the only language you know.

We are not the same.

It won't matter; AI will translate everything soon perfectly.
Godless, Soulless Machines can translate words, but they cannot truly understand meaning, as they cannot truly understand anything.

It's a bit like asking how do we restore the Roman empire.
You don't. We had our golden age, and it ain't ever coming back. To a large part the advancement of tech contributed to the "industry standards" problem, which completely and utterly stifled creativity.
When niggas were working back in the 90s, not only were they a higher caliber of niggas, in terms of quality and creativity, but the fairly primitive tech forced them to dial their shit up to 11. Today? You get dumb fucks like Jason Thor Hall. The industry is filled with 'em. They don't wanna make games, they want to be game devs. Same thing right? No, you dumb-dumb, there's a world of difference between the two.

We will, on occasion, get ludokino like Underrail, AoD or Battle Brothers, but as great as they are they too are merely pale imitations of the golden age.
Purging all psheks from here would be a good start.
Don't forget the pepiks.
This is rose-tinted nonsense. There is not one single game from your imagined "golden age" that can even touch the hem of Underrail's or BB's robe. Early-edition D&D-derived "miss 99 times and then properly hit for damage once, reload when the enemy does the same to you" was not some laudable ideal of combat to which new devs can never hope to aspire, and that's the best anybody at the time was offering us.

I studied the Hebrew Bible in grade school (against my will). We definitely aren't the same.

I'll agree that mechanically both Underrail and Battle Brothers are superior to anything that came out during the golden age, unfortunately I've abandoned my combatfag ways. Now I look at video games as an experience of which combatfaggotry is only a part of the whole. Aesthetically Underrail isn't great, it isn't bad either, but go look at the sprites for Fallout, or Heroes 3, literally timeless. Then there's the storyfaggotry, it doesn't get good until Expedition.
Underrail is still my favorite RPG, but objectively, as an experience, it's simply not as good as the vidya from 3 decades ago. You had teams of quality people working at their creative peak, Underrail was made by like 4 dudes in a garage.

But, AI is being filled with the essence of demons. Why do you think Musk wants to get to Mars; to start the transportal project between moons & Mars surface. Sure, the idea of teleporting raw elements to earth is a monetary bonus but the opening up demonic gates is the real
Goal. Right now they can only whisper through the cracks of reality. These sigils are but a few of the many demon circuits to implant into technology.

Copy the excellent Skald's philosophies and design, but balance the resources and classes better, add some deeper C&C for replays, and add a wider variety of enemies.
