Yeah, this deal goes much further. The article also mentions Paradox will be doing the QA. Which doesn't surprise me. Obsidian knows the game being polished and free of technical issues (however minor) will probably be the biggest factor in this game's reception due to their Bugsidian reputation. Despite being an established company, they have a lot more to prove in some respects than the other Kickstarters.

Thing is, Paradox has the same reputation.
Good, there'll still be a publisher to blame. :smug:

And RPS pounds on the South Park bugs thing, even outright lying

RPS: And yet, that was a consistent complaint in reviews from both critics and fans.

RPS: So in addition to marketing and distribution stuff, Paradox will be helping you with QA as well?

Urquhart: And that’s it. It’s a different relationship, in a lot of ways. We both want this to succeed. It’s not like me and Fred aren’t going to call each other up on Mondays and go, okay, well, we’re one penny over on the budget now, we have to drop QA testing today. That’s not a conversation that Fred and I will have. It is a conversation I’ve had with publishers in the past.

RPS: [To Fred] Are you interested in pursuing any other projects along these lines, that were born of Kickstarters? Would you go after Torment if that were an option?

Wester: Yeah! It depends on the project and the team, obviously. We want to work with developers who share our vision, to develop great games and deliver more of a full experience to the gamer. We’re talking a lot about fulfilling a gamer lifestyle. Which sounds like a cliché, but a lot of the people who play our games identify with those games. They’re not into baseball or soccer or mountain climbing or something else that takes a lot of time. They’re into these games and they take them seriously. That’s very important for us. We need to work with people who are not developing games just to make money, but to make a game that actually matters to people. I think that is something Obsidian has done really well.

RPS: Have you talked to inXile?

Wester: We haven’t yet. But I’d love to talk to those guys. Do you have an email address?

Urquhart: Brian Fargo might have been my boss at one point. And the producer on Torment might have worked for me in the past. And one of my partners might be writing for the game.
This will probably happen, then. InXile will want a publisher sooner or later, and I think even they see Paradox as being a better fit than Deep Silver.
Short stick for Deep Silver though, if they were hoping for a 'full partnership' with inXile and only get stuck with WL2 which will probably be the lesser of all these games.

Heh, not that it would be a bad thing but I think you're jumping to conclusions there.

of course I'm jumping to conclusions, but it doesn't feel like a stretch. they'll either go for deep silver because of the WL2 partnership or they'll go for paradox because they want in on the ménage à trois.

Giltspur from PS:T was selling "rooms" for you to rest from the side of the street in the Lower Wards. I'm sure most players can "imagine" the beds without having to see them.

In regular games yes, but here Sawyer already invented magical building stuff that holds stone archs together, just to justify background art...

I noticed but didn't say anything because I didn't want to look like a 'sperg...

But seriously I don't think it was much better in the Infinity Engine games (usually inns had what, 4-5 rooms, with a single bed each?).

I think you have the adra the wrong way round: the art is portraying a lore bit, being that adra is a real thing and this is how it was used.

yes. i know.

this is where we add another 30 pages to the discussion.

Uhm. Exactly what "missteps" are RPS talking about? What do they need to apologize for? I don't even understand this question. Nothing in the interview even prompts it. It's like it was just there from the start, like the guy writing the interview already had it in mind and wanted some kind of admission or apology... for... uhm... something? For some reason? What?

EDIT: I guess the interviewer is talking about bugs and glitches in past Obsidian games, but Obsidian haven't made any excessively buggy games in quite some time (New Vegas was rough at launch but got patched pretty quick), and the fact that there are a few bugs and glitches in their games doesn't set them apart at all from anyone else's these days, especially considering the relative complexity of RPGs compared to most other games on the market. The question still comes up as super awkward and unwarranted.

Save the "don't we deserve an apology?!" stuff for certain other publishers that have major, critical, blocker bugs and missing features in their products even 8 months after release, while still releasing paid and in some cases sponsored DLC the whole time... cough.

Jalf from the comments said:
This just seems like a weak attempt at manufacturing controversy. I like to think that RPS is better than that.
Uh-huh.

Nathan Greyson is a just a retard that hates Obsidian. Half that article makes no sense whatsover... I mean, why it opens with a Skyrim image, ffs? And questions like "are you gonna lie to everyone and abandon the pledges?" "why are your games so buggy?" "don't you think you owe a apology to the world?"... even the Codex interviewing Todd Howard would be less edgy.

Maybe the Skyrim image is hinting at the GDC announcement being the episodic Skyrim thing. :M

This is why Urquhart should come on the Codex instead of a shithouse like RPS. At least, we like GOOD games. it's not like journalists don't steal anyway. anything posted here would be on RPS/Kotaku/whatever else other people read.

Maybe they wanted to use a good looking screen shot and only had footage of PoE and Skyrim available.

That's the idea of what fair and no-shit-taking journalism is over at RPS. Fucking hell...

It's like RPS is determined to keep the "Obsidian games are buggy" reputation alive through sheer force of will.

I'd stop giving this asshole interviews if I were Feargus. And I'd call all my industry friends and tell them to stop giving this asshole interviews too.
