Backer portraits. Hmmm. That elf looks like a male Jaheira. I guess those are for player characters.

Pretty good update. Like all ive read in it.

Spells are good. No BG protection - removal effects, but next best thing at least. Great to hear the wizad spells will be so numerous. Like the druid stuff too.
Seems really well thought out as balance - counters to abilities of other classes so far.

So with will/ref/fort values being mainly based on attributes in PoE, I wonder if it will let us know based on anything other than trial and error. In DnD games, if you see mostly rogues you know not to bother with fireball because high reflex, so you attack a different defence. Try that here and it could be 'surprise, these are might/constitution rogues - your fort attack failed'.

I also enjoyed this update.

The portraits look very good. Interesting how some of the portraits are very BG1 whereas some have a very Justin Sweet IWD2 style texture (lots of loose strokes). The Aumaua one looks great in particular.

That Inn is 100% BG2 and IWD style, the round rooms are very reminiscent of the style.

Both Druids and Wizards sound good, I haven't read the text of the update yet but I watched the video and they both sound fine. It may be Sawyer's version of Wizard and Druid, but they both sound fun to play.

It is a shame to see a lack of the traditional wizard C&C spells like Sleep, Web, Grease etc but those would probably be too OP for the design principles.

No surprise about the partnership with Paradox. InXile did it first and it just makes the most financial sense to pair with a publisher for distribution. I hope that the quality of the delivered goods are not cheap because of this decision though. It's been years since fucking proper cloth maps and game boxes were manufactured.

Post #1000 in this thread. Was going to save it for something useful but I'm finding that hanging back from the game works better for me than detail scavenging. Will probably help me enjoy it more in the long run.

I do think it's kinda silly how the spell names are obviously slightly changed (and worse sounding) than their D&D originals, but I suppose you'd have to do that to avoid a copyright lawsuit from Hasbro.

Moonwells are also from D&D - not World of Warcraft. The very first set of D&D books I think one of the books was called Moonwell or something. Darkwalker on Moonshae, Black Wizards, Moonwell ?

Heh, typical D&D spells. I'm ok with that; most of them are fine and don't need to be reinvented.

don't expect paradox to be pushing out a ton of boxes for physical retail.
they're all about digital.
german publishers are different because they have domestic sales. no-one buys physical PC games in sweden.

Fixed :smug:

Also, kudos for making the portraits based on real-life pictures, BG1-style.

I asked Sawyer about the spell-snatching spell:

it is randomly selected from the enemy's grimoire. all spells of a certain level (3rd iirc) and lower are fair game.

Yeah, those backers really lucked out on those portraits. Must be very happy now. And it brings some nice but realistic diversity to characters too.

Wish they added some of the - push - crushing - interrupt - effects to the Fireball. Im guessing burn damage is a given.

Dimensional Shift - The caster and one ally are able to immediately switch locations, leaving a shockwave between them. Anyone caught in-between may be briefly Stunned. (Fortitude)

Minor Arcane Reflection - The caster erects a field of arcane energy around himself or herself, similar to the Arcane Veil. However, Minor Arcane Reflection has the ability to reflect an incoming hostile targeted (only) spell, sending it back to the original caster. The Reflection can try to reflect spells up to 3rd level -- and up to 10 total levels of spells -- before it expires. A failed attempt at reflection counts toward the limit. When an incoming spell targets the caster, the Reflection attacks the enemy's Will. If it succeeds in the attack, the spell is reflected. If two casters both have Arcane Reflections up, the attack can potentially bounce back and forth repeatedly until one caster fails his or her attack -- or exhausts his or her Reflection.

- these are going to be fun to play with.

I kinda wish they attempted to do something else, a bit different with magic but.. yeah... BG, IWD etc.
At least the spells are numerous and will be fun to play with and against other classes.
Im already imagining what kind of fun problems i will be able to create for enemy rogues and others.

And i like the more offensive take on the Druids too.
Havent seen a mention of some healing spells except the moonwell which is stationary radius spell.

Quick, someone ask Josh if Driud will be able to use spells while in the spiritshift - were form. (update only says no use of equipment while transformed)

Someone refresh my memory, what will be the content from the Codex? An inn, a brothel or what?

Actually, I think typical D&D spells are way more interesting. Here is a list of mostly 1st level spells from AD&D 1st edition (mount is from second edition).

  • Affect Normal Fires - Allows the mage to make any fire that fits in the spell's area to burn either twice as slow or twice as fast.
  • Charm Person - Convinces the target the wizard is a trusted friend of his. May last for several days or months, depending on the target's intelligence.
  • Enlarge - Enlarges the target (which may be inanimate) by a percentage of its size, according to the wizard's level.
  • Ventriloquism - Allows the caster to throw his voice from anywhere within range. Caster is also able to modify his own voice when doing so, within limits.
  • Fool's Gold - Temporally change copper into gold.
  • Change Self - Disguises the illusionist as a creature of similar size.
  • Magic Jar - Allows the wizard to posses the mind of creatures around the magic "jar". The wizard can keep laving and repossessing different bodies as long as the jar is intact. This spell, in the second edition ,further allowed the caster to permanently steal someone's body too.
  • Mount - Summons a mount for the wizard to ride. Higher levels allow the summoning of more exotic mounts, such as an elephant or even a griffon.

Wow, we have an update and only a handful of new posts here. has The Codex finally achieved a healthy attitude towards this game? :incline:

Nice portraits, btw. I wish I pledged more, to have myself drawn like that.

Alex While I can appreciate your sentiment, there's no real application for many of those P&P spells in a video game. I've played D&D in every incarnation since 2.0 and I'm familiar with the spells and their versatility -- and also how the most interesting spells are rarely if ever actually implemented into a game.

Anyway, the list of spells denoted for PoE has things that might as well be called "not flaming hands" or "not agannazar's scorcher".

Yeah, this deal goes much further. The article also mentions Paradox will be doing the QA. Which doesn't surprise me. Obsidian knows the game being polished and free of technical issues (however minor) will probably be the biggest factor in this game's reception due to their Bugsidian reputation. Despite being an established company, they have a lot more to prove in some respects than the other Kickstarters.

Thing is, Paradox has the same reputation.

It seems Unity 5 was released, today. Which doesn't really have anything to do with this mammoth thread, but it seems to have some footage from PoE in one of their release videos.(Around 1.39 mins in)

Ok, I haven't been keeping up to date. Was the first I saw from this game that wasn't screenshots so figured I would drop it off here. :salute:
