The sunset sarsaparilla fetch quest was balls though.

But it's more of a 'once you spend at least 30 hours in Fallout: New Vegas this quest will autocomplete'-type quest

It was mentioned somewhere a few pages back that Obsidian found a distributor to do the translation at a very low cost.

Yeah but Ausir is trying to fight the good fight, as in he is afraid some shitty company might be handling it. If you are Russian or Polish, do voice your concerns here.

Just a FYI to our POTATO friends.

Sure, I know expecting all this stuff from this game is unrealistic. But I think expecting they to do some of these things isn't that much. Trying to introduce a bit of this is why Fallout is one of my favorite RPGs. When I got to play it, I more or less hoped this would be the path RPGs would try to pursue. So, I am always hoping new games will try to pick it up. For example, I don't expect Project Eternity will make each dungeon have interesting crap happen if you leave them and come back in a few days.

But I would hope one or two would! I don't expect each quest to have strict and well thought out timed consequences, but a couple in the main quest line and a handful side-quests? I don't think this is too much to ask. Heck, even if most long time consequences fall back into the combat system, rather than the story and the situation, I would still be somewhat happy. I think there is much to be gained by trying to bring the separate parts of the RPG game together into a big, complex challenge, rather than making each thing be its little own game, like some modern games try to do.

Ugh that post you linked too makes me feel bad for POTATO-codexians. I hope they strike a deal with CD-Projekt/GOG on the translation stuff.

Like Ausir said, it may not be in the hands of GOG to say so (which company to pick). So... I just hope for the best.

CD-Projekt has a long history of doing Polish translations for the IE games. They probably have a deal in place for this as well.

It is generally concidered prestigious to play western RPGs on english when it comes to my potatoes, but I'm still happy they'll translate game to russian, because even with all the piracy going, every RPG fan probably will buy game just out of respect to Obsidian and love of old-school games. We are still one-leg in Incline, feeling strongly about old titles. And, if I need to repeat myself - publishers understand well that no matter the piracy and low cost of RUB compared to $$$, it's better to sell something, than to sell nothing. That's a talk going back into the old days (publishers fear of russian piracy), with whole lot of articles in old magazines and forums, but after few publishers dipped into russian market and understood that potatogold is actually as good as any other gold, they are now have to be stupid to not make russian localisation of a PC game on a, maybe pirate-heavy, but almost PC-exclusive market.

tl;dr Russian and Polish localisation is good, cause more :takemymoney: for Obsidian, and I want them have more.

As for quality of translation, it varies from studio to studio. Last time I played 1C localisations I remember them being atrocious. But there are good examples, like Warcraft III by Softclub. Usually, DRM is the biggest concern. Let's just say it comes to hilarious things like me owning official games and still using pirated versions, like F:NV, which installs about hour from DVD and forces steam shit on me  Or the infamous Starforce, my god, do I need a gun specifically for people who designed it.

Insert Title Here RPG Wokedex Codex Year of the Donut I'm very into cock and ball torture
The way I see it the potato people would steal the game even if it was in English. This at least gives the few honest potatoes that exist (are there any?) a chance to get the game and support the genre they love.

Yes, except Feargus has actually specifically stated that he doesn't mind Fedex quests in moderation. He thinks they add variety.

Then again...Feargus. So I dunno.

Ugh. I remember reading that. That didn't exactly fill me with confidence. Very disappointing actually. I would have actually thought that anyone who actually refers to them as FedEx quests wouldn't think too highly of them, but I guess that's not the case

I thought that might have been one possible logical path to rest cooldowns though. Even if you only want small amounts of FedEx delivery you are thinking in terms of keeping that sort of thing to a minimum and then you naturally start wondering why. Analyzing it. The first answer is that delivering packages is a real life mechanic that most people find pretty boring. Getting people to pay for the privilege of doing it seems rather optimistic. Since it's an unfun activity it seems like you would want to, if not outright eliminate it, at least keep it to a minimum. So let your mind just think about the implications for a second and...you get The Question. Why make a round trip journey to a campsite if it's inherently boring hiking simulator activity? And that's the trap because the answer is subtle and complex and maybe even counter-intuitive. At first glance it does seem to resemble a short FedEx quest. The product you are retrieving is (indistinguishable from) a sleep widget which resets your health and gives you back all of your spells. So it seems pretty sensible to ask, "Why bother retrieving the sleep widget at all?". Just keep it in your pocket and hit the Reset button on its face instead. It really is a very easy trap to fall into and you have to be at least slightly clever to find your way out again. What's strange is I do think Sawyer does have that kind of cleverness which makes me think there is more to it.

It's possible that he was hoping that the forum combatants could help him resolve it. Could give him a reason why his logic was not sound. Why it makes sense to intentionally punish the player by making them play a hiking simulator for x amount of time. It doesn't sound like he received any answers that resolved his logic puzzle. Really it's a sort of logic bomb. If you keep looking at it from a short term perspective it seems like punishment no matter how you spin it. It's only looking at things with a longer/broader view that you see just how much the combat mechanics are changed by that simple difference of not having to retrieve the Reset Widget because it's already in your pocket. And yet he seems like a highly intelligent person to me. He really does. So I don't know. It's also possible that he just doesn't see a problem with resets between encounters in any case, which is a whole 'nother can of worms. After you've convinced yourself that insta-reset would be disastrous you can always go back again to the original logic of what is good or worthwhile about the hiking itself? At which point you are trapped again. Sorry if I'm rambling. I'm getting tired.

You know there are people who actually buy games in our shithole? RPGs are among the best selling since like, forever. Remember BG? Or you are too young? Polish translation will be probably done by CD-Projekt cause of deal with GOG. Stop whining.

1. It's not 1999.
2. the game isn't going to be an 'xtra retro classic edition' RPG for few bucks and for outdated hardware, as it is now with Infinity games or Gothics.
3. Potatization of those 1000 KB of text in Planescape, made by CDP, definitely wasn't cheap.

Consider the all nuances of those facts.

Stop whining.
Sorry, it's my entitlement.

http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/59977-inventory-system/

I propose an entirely new way of looking at inventory and one I have considered building myself.

Why have tiny little squares that represent "slots" for inventory? I don't see real people carrying around alchemist drawers to keep their stuff in?
People have pockets and backpacks and belts.
Why not do something original that truly makes the game stand out. I liked Skyrim approach to inventory but the out of the box UI was terrible.

Why not have inventory searchable?

Press "I" it brings up your backpack that really is just an empty search box, you type a letter and all the items starting with that letter show up
D - brings up Dagger and Diamond
I've never liked the grid style inventory management with small icons. To me the icons are not needed. I don't need to see a mini picture of my short sword, since 90% of them look the same.

Inventory should be limited by weight not by "slots" I hated that in BG1, your fighter can't pickup a scroll because he has extra arrows along. Seriously? That is just so 1990

Just my .2 cents

The thing to remember about fedex quests in PE is that this is fucking Obsidian, so like New Vegas at least they will be well-written and likely matter to faction play. Bring 'em the fuck on, I say.

I don't know. To me if a FedEx quest is really that well written it isn't a FedEx Quest anymore. In fact it isn't really even a Quest anymore. It becomes a Story and then all can be forgiven, at least if the story is decent. Most of the quests in FONV weren't too bad. Some genuine FedEx Questing, but a forgivable amount. And of course the main story itself was just brilliant. That's not what I am referring to when I talk about FedEx Quests. I'm talking about a Bethtard go-fetch quest with no other redeeming features. There's no story or interesting writing. It's just, "Go fetch!" for a reward upon your return. I couldn't play Morrowind very long because of them. Well and the RT combat was awful twitchy popamole. BG2 was an example of another game with very few FedEx quests. That game had so many damn interesting quests that had absolutely nothing to do with the main plot. The little mini-stories were just fun. It didn't hurt that you could look forward to combat that just worked and was great fun.

I guess I would agree with that. Though I would say if the world is cool enough I can deal with true fetching (as in Morrowind).

Yeah, I think a good example of this is the Planescape quest to get a grimoire was basically, just setting exposition, but it was loads of fun exposition. Still, I think that, if that quest had, in some way, different outcomes based on how you approached it, it could have been even better. Like, a very chaotic Nameless One could have been unable to form a square book. Instead, maybe it would have taken a portentous different shape and start with a different spell, allowing for more interactivity.

My point is that well done "fetch quests" like this are nice, but if you have enough resources, you can always make them more interactive, and thus, more interesting.

Just got a massive butthurt on polish translation. Because, as maybe you know, those idiots obsidians put potato among stretch goals.

I mean, what the fuck? Nobody will fucking buy it in this shithole, all those 'hardkore gamers' (śmierdzące kuce) in the best case will buy it at a torrent site. RPGs have the lowest sales possible, and I mean also those AAAAA 'RPGs'. Fucking gry-online.pl called for spamming the Obsidian translation poll, like a pope pedophile for crusade. An army of dumbfucks voted for this bullshit, propably not even knowing what's an RPG is, screaming 'porand stronk' while jerking to Pilsudski/Korwin slashporn.

:x : x

TLDR: Wasted money.

Potatoes may buy it since it's an IE inspired game and pollacks have such awful taste they think bgs are good. And good here is an understatement.

I've already stated a creative way to include the Vancian system or a version of it and remove rest spamming from the game. I think the post over on the boards there has about 30 like or something. Hopefully they consider it.

The classes and adventurers hall was a good update that I only just saw, quite happy with it.

The art style so far is just adequate. I'm not a huge fan but depending on how it looks in the actual game, it could be fine or shit. I am already seeing a bit of a Unity clay model look when I see those pictures and imagine them as 3D models. Then again if the backdrops are prerendered, it could work out fine.

I'm not happy with some things but I'm teetering on the edge now, will most likely back for the lowest tier.

By what definition of "priest" is an advocate of socialism a priest?
Think of them as a priest/preacher multiclass. Priest because they were members of an organized structure (commie party in this case) and preachers because they would go around and, well... preach (just imagine that scene from Life of Brian and you'll understand what I'm talking about).

That's not a priest, just a political activist or propagandist.
The only difference there is the creed.
This is a dumb discussion. A priest is an adherent of a religion. A political ideology is only a religion in hyperbolic figurative language. It also turns out that atheist priests are extremely common in the real world, so I don't find any of this especially interesting.

Yeah, and their Torment translation is a real delight, the translators did an amazing job. So there is a chance the localization will be good, and if P:E's story is on the same level, it's going to be really nice.I quite enjoy languages and appreciate not everything being in English all the time, so I'm happy about this...
