I enjoyed the bit at the end of the livejournal post

"* Miss B_____ did actually play exactly one game session of 4th edition D&D, and she described it as one of her worst experiences in gaming, ever."

Damn straight.

Clearly she's never played Rifts with a DM that has a scat fetish.

Fighting Vampires in sewers, never again.

I already mentioned in this thread that I have played before. With 2nd-edition-loving, 3e-hating grognards no less.

Well okay they weren't that groggy considering we barely killed or fought anything at all.

It's pretty apparent to me that any given P&P session is only as good as its GM and players. For example, 4e having combat that takes too long wouldn't be a problem in a campaign where you're not killing a bunch of things all the time. That fault lies with the GM.

Wrong. Fault lies in the rules. A Good GM changes those rules (IE reduces Monster HP to 75%).

If they do not do that it doesn't mean they are a bad GM though, might be good in other ways but be one of those people that blindly follows the canon rules.

When 3rd edition came out, I was used to 2nd edition and wasn't particularly a fan of Challenge Ratings and EL crap, too constricting. So I just used the Fighter's 2E XP table for every campaign and made up my own XP and item rewards. I found that way more fun than following the derp rules.

This bit is true though, definitely.

When 75% of the book is devoted to combat, I don't think it's entirely the GM's fault that there is a lot of combat in a DnD compaign.

That said, all RPGs are as good as their content, poor mechanics can easily be worked around: see Fallout.

Meh, Combat chapter in D&D 3 is just 27 pages long, of the +300 in the Player's Handbook, GM's book have even less... you'll only get that ratio if you consider every spell/item/monster/NPC a COMBAT THING, instead of a regular part of the game...

In fact, that's the issue with bad GMs and players that brainwashed by banal shit boring games. If you say "You see a goblin", they'll all "ATTACK!!111", because shitty GMs never, EVER do monster NPCs.

^ 1 time with some retards, you see, so the Roguey knows all

Wow, you just exploded my irony meter, given your responses to my attitudes towards P&P.

Well, it's sort of half-true. Combat's not the end-all-be-all or anything, but the odds of getting through a long campaign without at least a few combat-heavy sessions are pretty low. A good group that's fun to play with is definitely important though.

My reply to Roguey had nothing to do with her playgroup's preferences for AD&D. The 'retards' comment was based on previous stuff Roguey'd said about the games.

I play OD&D myself time and again, and you're right; I would never call someone a retard because of their P&P style preference.

...though people who play OD&D can probably find a better system for their style of play in 99.9% of the cases :troll:

A system partly made for tactical combat fails if its boring when you use it for multiple scenarios of tactical combat.

If you run a tactical dungeon crawl game 4E blows... well, OK, it pretty much blows anyway, but for the sake of this discussion.

I played a video game once, so you see, I know all about video games
Was it CoD? If yes, indeed you know all about at least 90% of new video games. :balance:

I wonder how it is you can speak so broadly about P&P when you know this is the case and you've only played it with one group then.
