no one really knows what the term "roguelike" acyually means....it's just something people on gaming sites started saying and everyone just went with it, cuz, you know, no one wants to seem like an out of the loop idiot.

I'm not asking about the term Roguelike, I'm well aware of it. I am asking about the Fog of War in those games. I have some theories about what they mean but I have not actually played any of these 'roguelike' games before so..

The only differences I can think of between roguelike fog of war and IE games are: facing matters, and differing levels of darkness.

A comment Josh Sawyer made hmmm somewhere's ago about the state of the 'feel' of playing the game, ie. responsiveness of actions suggested that until that is tweaked a bit better we won't be seeing anything just yet.

I think it's a good idea for them to wait until a decent level of polish until showing something and I think they've learned that in the past with concept art and the UI screenshot I guess.

I played a fuckload of 'em and I can't think of any difference between the modal Roguelike FoW and IE/RTS/TBS FoW.

These first bits may or may not have been mentioned before:

Defiance Bay does not match the linguistic approach of P.E's other naming schemes because ...

rope kid said:
Because that's where the revolution happened. It was originally named New Dunryd.

The symbol on the Orlan Cipher's doublet is Defiance Bay logo.

rope kid said:
In this picture, the symbol on the orlan's chest is for Defiance Bay, a hand grasping the Ine Gyrd, the sceptre that symbolizes the power of the Aedyran emperor, over the waters of the bay.

Some fluff info on wichts and soulless beings.

Something Awful said:
So, people can be born without souls and no-one really notices, eh. What is the difference between a person with a soul and a person without a soul?

rope kid said:
It's immediately noticeable. A person without a soul (born that way or made that way) is in a persistent vegetative state. They have no awareness or volition. It is ultrabad and most people in this condition die unless they are cared for constantly.

rope kid said:
Most children who reach adolescence without souls do so because they are cared for by extremely patient parents who a) hope that someday it can be fixed or b) just can't bear to let one of their children die. Not all parents choose to do so.

An SA user just commented saying that in Roguelikes FoW is cleared by the casting of light rather than radius around party members.

Yeah, that makes sense. Facing also matters as someone already mentioned.

Light casting in roguelikes is not generally materially different than sight radius. It's just fictional shit like "Oh Billy the Barbarian has X sight radius" vs. "Billy the Barbarian has a torch/flashlight/the ark of the covenant." I guess some have it so you can see like the lantern e.g. held by an enemy from far off, but it's not particularly a roguelike thing

One thing I can think of that some roguelikes do is to make it so all the FoW in a room disappears as soon as you enter the room, i.e. you can always see the far wall of a room. Sight radius only functions in corridors. That would certainly help with the OCD "gotta wipe that pixel of FoW out of the corner" syndrome.

edit - arc of the covenant omg

Look at me, I am autistic excited about PE & passionate about the creative process and looking forward to the "First Look" a lot!! And because I know there are many others who are excited too, I share a simple analysis of some speculation on "Why" the "First Look" is probably coming very soon :D

'k.

Corrected. But I'll give you points because "Analytic" also starts with an "A" and ends with a "tic". Heck, the "u" upside down is an "n" so you almost got it mate.

Some other tidbits

Wicht inspired by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myling (Some guy complaining about the plausibility of the situation in order for a wicht to be created, Sawyer replied with this link).

Animancers and ciphers don't know a ton about souls in plants, but at least some large, old trees in Eir Glanfath have them. Dyrwoodans found this out the hard way during the War of Black Trees.

I'm taking this to PM. It's not relevant to PE. Please send me a PM if you want to reply to this^ allegation.

I don't really see the connection. Abandoning an unwanted child in the woods is an entirely different thing, and I'm guessing it happened much more commonly than circumstances for creating a wicht would (they indeed sound as a rare occurence).

I don't really see the connection.

I'll post the context

Well, not to be a smug ass, but applying my real-world historical knowledge to this, my immediate thought is that such a thing would pretty much lead to societies in which infant exposure is a commonly accepted practice, maybe even formalized to the extent that the village priest/local wise woman/clan patriarch gets to make a judgement on whether or not a new-born child will be left to die or not.
