Maybe I can convince professional writer Jaz to review
Witchhaven
Battlespire

if she gets her all time favorite
Cybermage: Darklight Awakening
too.
Why I feel like I'm being blackmailed here?

Honest question, what of RPG Cybermage has? I thought it was just a DOOM clone...

It's DOOM meets Ultima Underworld. Has cool stuff like many spells, potions of resistance, unlocking spells, armors, shields, diverse weapons, secrets, etc... it's a good game, but for some reason that I can't describe, it's never feels great.

Witchhaven? FFS. If you're going to feature non-RPGs, they should at least be good ones (like Star Control 2 :smug:)

Also, the face of the character on the left in that image looks weird.

Crooked Bee That was me, and it was "Grinding for XP".

But it IS a good game, and a nice historical piece from when everything was Doom 2, Hexen and Duke Nuken 3D, so they went for a "Doom RPG"...

Hey, I actually played and finished Witchhaven (I was serving in the military at the time and was very bored)

It's theoretically "interesting" but it's really just shovelware.

felipepepe you ruined my childhood memories! Silver is horrible! (Well, technically, I wasn't a child anymore, when I played this game for the 1st time, but it was a long time ago).

In all honesty, though, Silver is not an RPG, by any stretch of imagination. There is no character development (there is some progression, but it all happens automatically), combat is completely action oriented and its controlls and mechanics rather bad; the dialogues just play out: you have no infuence on what the characters say whatsoever, there is absolutely no minignfull C&C (at least so far and I'm half way through the game), the story is as bland as it gets... I... really...:negative:

Silver is an action adventure, and not a very good one, if you ask me. I really have a lot of love for this game, out of nostalgia, but I honestly don't think it's a good candidate for your book.
Why did you decide it's worth including on the list? Maybe I'm missing something. Was it because you believed it kind of bridges the gap between console and PC RPGs?

Silver was a nice little game. Not great or anything, but fun. I don't remember who much character progression it had, but it had loot IIRC and you could use differenct equipment. So it has some RPG elements.

Yes, it does have some RPG elements, but they are too few and far between to make Silver a game worthy of this compendium. At least in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a crap game (the part about it being horrible was just a joke). There are several things I like about it, e.g. the backgrounds are beautiful, the music is very good, the world is rather open and there is no hand holding. Combat is also rather challanging, though not for the right reasons, unfortunately.

I currently have a similar (though to a lesser extent) experience with Soulbringer - I mean I still like it, but it clearly has some glaring flaws I failed to notice when I played it first all those years ago. That pathfinding... ugh!

I think that's inevitable. The Codex's classics are classics because they still play well today and feel great, but not every game aged well (or was that great to begin with).

I added Silver because of the many fansites and reviews I found for it. Seems like it was big at the time. norolim , I think Silver is interestng as a very console-like RPG, a mix of Diablo and Final Fantasy, but I'll leave the choice to you. If you think that you can write one page about it, telling why you like it even thought it's not a great game, I'll keep it. ;)

OK. In that case, let me finish it first.

However, since Kights of Legend, the other game I signed up for, is also very much a flawed gem and will be dificult to review, I'd like to swap that with something easier, for now. I checked the list, I posted before and I can see IWD II is still up for grabs. So waht do you say if I finish playing Silver now, decide if I can present it in good enough light and, depending on the decision write a piece on it or not, then do a review for IWD 2 and after that go back to Knights of Legend, if it's still available?
