Very nice. It was about time someone tried this.

combat system with active pause

Shit, pig fuck...

Oh well, at least it's not an FPS.

I never played this, but I have read the rule book. If I remember correctly, death is actually a functional mechanic for furthering progress. Seems like a very ambitious project. I will watch this with interest.

Oh shit, I didn't know they were doing a Paranoia CRPG, that's pretty cool. I'd think it would be exceedingly hard to pull off in CRPG format since the whole fucking point of Paranoia is the players having fun fucking with one another and the DM purposefully trying to stir up shit between them as the computer, but fingers crossed.

All I wanted to do in Divinity 2 is be able to make party members with opposing goals, but after using that as a selling point Larian told me to go fuck myself. It sounds like in a weird way this game might speak to the promise of the kind of fun D2 could have had if they'd bothered trying.

Funny you should mention that, DoS2 ended up being Paranoia-like for me in co-op. We started out chummy and working together, then getting near the end it turned into a flat out brawl with him teleporting my ass in the middle of nowhere and me dropping a meteor on his head, and then in the final encounter I backstabbed him just as the final boss was about to fall and stole my desired win. Which at the time was a mild pain in the ass since there was a lot of shittalk going on rather than the comfortable evenings playing a CRPG together, but the upside to it was it was certainly memorable. And in my defense he's the traitorous son of a bitch who first kicked off hostilities so he deserves every meteor he got.

I will say I do hate the Pip Boy ripoff art. I wish the posters had been done in the style of Jim Holloway:

Yeah those look absolutely horrendous not only compared to the original paranoia or fallout art, but in general, too.

He was backstabbed, frontstabbed, sidestabbed. Overstabbed and understabbed, propably also stabbed from directions we do not know exist.

Who knows which stab killed him?

Akshually, I think it was established at some point that most of the stabs were relatively minor wounds and Julius might have survived if not for just a single one that got him in some vital organ.

Establishing things after 2000 years without adecquate source material (none of the historians who described the assassination had medical education) is quite prone to errors :)

Akshually2, it was a conclusion made by contemporaries:

Suetonius relates that a physician who performed an autopsy on Caesar established that only one wound (the second one to his chest that pierced his aorta) had been fatal. This autopsy report (the earliest known post-mortem report in history) describes that Caesar's death was mostly attributable to blood loss from his stab wounds.

Ok, I give you that. Even with ancient limited medical knowledge they could establish that. And Suetonius, while being a filthy liar most of the time, had no reason to lie here.

Anyway, even if Ceasar would not receive this one, decisive blow, he could have died from the attack anyway. Either from bleeding or from festering wounds (there were like 20+ of them, if one of the senators did not regularly clean his knife...).

Suetonius said that all the emperors were child molesters though. He was the Pizzagater of the 1st century.

As for the game, that trailer really is rubbing me the wrong way. It seems they're going for Fallout, but taking itself even more seriously. One thing I love about Paranoia is that it's not just a dystopia where the evil computer/Big Brother/whatever controls everything. The Computer is incompetent but the humans are too busy back-stabbing each other to overthrow it. Please do not let this turn into a goddamn YA novel about noble young people fighting the system.

My team has the sexiest and deadliest waifus you can recruit.

Those are TERRORIST mutant traitors now. Get on with the times, gramps.

As much as I am leery of the new edition of tabletop Paranoia, I will remain cautiously optimistic regarding the vidya. Hopefully they'll add some randomised, hidden allegiances to characters you create, so that you'll never know when your Joe-R-eliable will suddenly decide to start mowing down your own team.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
If the game is not made in a way where your PCs constantly die in ridiculous ways while often trying to secretly murder each other, it's not really Paranoia :P

PARANOIA: HAPPINESS IS MANDATORY was announced today. It's a CRPG based on Paranoia, commissioned by Cyanide Studios, being developed by Black Shamrock in Dublin, and to be published by Big Ben Interactive.

"Commissioned," heh.

Congratulations! Any chance you might make a voice cameo?

Greg Costikyan Well, at least so far, only The Computer will be voiced. And of course there are localization reasons to minimize voice acting. But if plans change, I'd not be averse. I sat with the team for a week last year, and review builds, but I'm not actively involved with the development.

The posters stink. Cut-rate Vault Boy knock-offs. The PnP art was endearing amateurish, they should've gone for that if they don't have the talent to give it its own look and feel.
