Lol companions. Just hire adventurers.

That is what you are doing in BG1, and arguably BG2, with just a little sprinkling of personality to make them unique. I like written companions as well, but I'm currently playing with 4 puppets and Durance and I'm honestly not that bothered by the lack of reactions from them. Well, that may be just because I find most of the companions very boring and uninteresting people and not that different from adventurers. Currently at Raedric's. My recent BG1 playthrough enlightened me to the positive sides of companions shutting their mouths most of the time and just enjoying the combat. I would've preferred Obsidian making a lot of "sidekicks", or whatever the name was which are basically BG1-style companions, and not only 4, but alas. I'm really curious as to how Bioware managed to create such a huge game with so many companions like BG1, let alone the enormous BG2 with even more companions, but Obsidian struggle with making 2 playthroughs feel different enough and having to share companions. These overwritten nu-Bioware style companions go very much against the spirit of the IE games imo.

Does the creepy animancer chick in Raedric's basement provide any alternative solutions or is she just kill fodder?

Well, actually she is the only person who is right and in fact making some progress to solve the legacy problem. I kept her and Raedic alive.

Speaking of tasteful rape...

Rance - Fighter - will do more than Watch!
Shizuka - Wizard
Uruza - Paladin
Sill - Priest

Then?

Maria - Rogue
Kanami - Monk? Rogue?
Yuzumi - Ranger
Patton - Monk? Fighter?
Rick - Barbarian?
Lia - Cipher?
Kenshin - Paladin
Senhime - Barbarian? Monk?
Omachi - Druid
Athena 2.0 - Chanter
Rizna - Wizard

Kind of hard without multiclassing like ToEE ... at least the system will support buff wizards like Gandhi and Rizna.

Yeah, I took the cat as well. When I talked to her I could only wiggle myself out of the situation, then went back to the priest on the last floor. Didn't want to talk to her again because I thought she might attack anyway, so, yeah, I guess I'm gonna see what she wants me to do (probably kill the priest).

She doesn't attack you but won't ask you to do anything else.

I believe the dispositions are usually the deciding factor in what dialog options are present.

I'm cruel 1 and deceptive 1, so she might offer something interesting, will definitely talk to her again.

Monk for 5th, Druid for 6th will make a strong, balanced group imo. If you're on PotD Chanter will make a decent sub for Monk if you wanna try something different.

Much like ToEE, Fighters are best with a two hand imo. Unlike ToEE, Reach weapons don't make everything else look like absolute hogshit, there are good options for all weapon styles.

One-shot the Raedric fight on PotD. The bear companion really stood its ground, I'm surprised, it managed to tank 1 guard, 1 Chosen (Paladin? The tough melee guy) of Berath and being shot at by the archer and it didn't die.

Also, is the fight balanced for a 4-man party? It seemed too easy and the mobs didn't do as much damage as you'd think they'd do. The AI was atrocious, though, the "archmages" rushed into melee, positioning themselves with their back towards my priest who promptly turned them into minced meat with her sneak attacks. I don't think they tried to cast even one spell. What gives?

What level were you? It shouldn't be an easy fight by any means; if you aced it on the first try you're doing something right, or else the AI glitched or something. Yes those casters certainly should be casting.
