Zoomers in this thread don't understand how spectacular Origin and Sierra were in the 80's and 90's.

Also where is Infocom?

OP is a fag.

edit: Er just saw that it was about RPG developers. OP might not be a fag.

Many of my favourite crpgs have been developed by companies with dubious-very limited production besides their 1-2 masterpieces or in a couple of cases by new developers wich are just starting so in both cases they are not "best studios ever"*.

On the other hand among those companies with more consistent catalog, Sir-Tech, Origin, New World Computing, etc, the difference between SSI and the rest is extreme: In 12 years (1984-1995) they developed or published close to 50 crpgs or hybrids, with dozens of decent, good or masterpieces among them. I count at least 13 good-very good titles + other 10 "decent" and about 24 others I didn't even try yet. Even if only a couple of games out of that 47-48 total are among my total favourites, still I enjoyed greatly with over 10 of its games and that's something I can't say of any other studios (and probably won't happen anymore).

Edit. Indeed, a lot of games I though were developed by SSI were only published by them.

You know, many of these games weren't made by SSI alone, but also by other studios in the pool (SSI were only publisher/contractors)

NWC, LGS, Origin Systems, Iron Tower, From Software, and even Bethesda have all more votes than Obsidian right now. :incline: of the codex, and I hope this goes beyond just anti-SJW backlash.

I'm pretty sure if we had more votes even CD Projekt would be higher than Obsidian.

Demon's Winter was pretty good.
Is it better than Wizard's Crown? I only played WC, it had a marvelous combat, but exploration part was pretty meh overall.

I liked it better than Wizard's Crown. A more balanced game where in the end I felt I hadn't seen all items or faced all foes yet (like MM2).
I thought Nahlakh was Wizard's Crown "done right", with better control when you could see which way enemies were facing, for example.

Yep, it had better exploration, interesting magic system and was overall great game. I especially liked finding magic books and feeling of urgency, because you've found more and more demonic foes between common monsters. They were real pain in the ass, with their immunities and fighting until the last HP.

wat how did cleve get more votes than vd

Maybe because Colony Ship isn't released yet?

Just make another one : Greatest Game developer of the 21st century and i'd give you :
  1. Sirtech (Wizardry 8 )
  2. Iron Tower Studios (AoD, Dungeon Rats, Colony Ship )
  3. Heroic Fantasy Games (KotC, KotC 2 )
  4. Troïka (Arcanum, ToEE)
  5. Golden Era Games (Grimoire )

What a weird story Sir-Tech is. Imagine having a series as popular in Japan as Wizardry, while Final Fantasy 7 is the biggest game on the planet, in a time you need money...and you still don't make one Wizardry game one the PSX where you might make some money. I mean, you could say the same thing about all these other CRPG developers too that'll go down in the early 2000s, but it's most peculiar with Sir-Tech given they had a hit in Japan and on consoles; it's just they didn't put them out themselves, and they never even seemed to think of that as a market to target.

It's a little weird with SSI too, especially given how Panzer General came from them playing Daisenryaku on the Sega Genesis.

Am I the only guy to vote for Jeff?

COme on. I know his releases are utterly shitty now, but have none of you played Geneforge 2? or Exile3? come on.

You know 3 votes are not enough to vote for him. I like Geneforge series and I enjoyed (mildly in most cases) almost everything he did before late 2000s, but I could cite 10 or more studios before Spiderweb. He is probably the most prolific 1/2-developers micro-studio but even in that category he has compentition with new microstudios with a single but brilliant game as Stygian or Lo-Fi.

Also the blame of decline in middle studios is more distributed while the absurdly low level of innovation and the loop of copy-paste titles (and the shitty last ones) in Spiderweb is almost all Jeff fault.

Golden Era Games is only one vote shy of tying Looking Glass Studios for seventh-best CRPG developer of all time.

SSI did quite a lot in house development, but about half of these games are done by different studios.
