I'm not really liking the way this is developing. I was hoping "firearms" was an indication that it would be Victorian era or Steampunk with some medieval primitive cultures as the first concept art showed. And this whole "Souls" thing is a hair shy of being "Complete nonsense".

Seriously considering removing my pledge. :/

And "mana" makes sense? WTF? It's magic, by definition it doesn't make sense. IMO using souls as a source of power is a rather interesting and rarely used idea (I don't know any RPG that used it actually and the one game I know - Sacrifice - is one of the greatest games ever created). It will be nice to see something like this for a change assuming the change won't be in name only (mana -> souls).

As for the firearms being there only as a decoration, well, that does make sense. I would think that people would either be using melee weapons OR firearms, depending on what would be more effective. In Arcanum it was a wonder that anyone would be training to become a firearms master if he wasn't a dwarf or a technology oriented person because standard guns sucked and swords or even daggers were much more useful. It was there for people who liked a bit of challenge and who explored areas thoroughly (without certain schematics some battles could become really difficult although even with elephant gun you could defeat most of the opponents, including the final one).

Besides, this time frame might have been chosen so that we could see interesting changes in the sequels and the ratio between swordsmen and gunslingers.

Yes, well, I fear that I stray a little too far from abstract thinking and am more embracing to the understanding of reality conceptual theoretics. :/

Tsk, tsk, tsk. You forget your place, subhumans. It shouldn't even be about what retarded Codex team you try to put in the game, it should be what retarded teams you try to stop from appearing in the game. Do you want some shits from reddit making an appearance? Or something awful?
It's what life teaches you: it's not about how good you have it, it's about how bad others have it.

Our very own party of thugs? We should start that fundraiser already.

A delusional group of aggressive travelers, lead by an insane ginger... Edit. And old geezer who speaks like a twelve year girl should also be present. It would be the mighty dwarf from the Pedobeard clan.
A craze scout that exaggerates all new information should also not be forgotten.

But the idea is awesome. The fighting within the group would break out, before you would even have a chance to fight them.

How about 'Prosperos Travelling Carnivale', imagine the possibilities, it can even be done tastefully :obviously:

But would it represent codex then?

How about designing an encounter which simply does not suck and is cool and creative and fun, without any dumb codex memes, considering how often encounter design in rpgs is criticized here, you know, just to show the world how such things should be done properly?..

Someone (HHR?) said the developers are only accepting forum references, etc, if they were subtle.

With a travelling carnival, you could throw in a bearded lady (possibly dwarven), a tranny, an angry midget, a moronic strongman, a bizarre ocultist (Prosper reference) or things along those lines with possibility of getting away with it.

It may be more subtle than what people are expecting, but Codexian references could definitely be made using the general idea (e.g, Bizarre Prosper style paintings in the circus wagon, but I'm sure people more clever than myself could do better with the premise).

I won't be donating if we decide for some retarded circle jerk featuring retards like Skyway. Make any references to the Codex or (if you must) codexers very subtle. I'm not very creative but some of you are and it shouldn't be to hard to come up with a theme for the party that incorporates some general Codex viewpoints, as opposed to duurrrr skyway and prosper so funneh.
Making the references very subtle would, kinda, defeat the purpose of this, wouldn't it? Given that it would be, most likely, an encounter, or, at best, a series of encounters, being subtle and relatively understated, like in the case of the W2 location, wouldn't be the best option. We need something outrageous, to make that encounter memorable.

No. No. Memorable shouldn't be equalled with "retarded". Outrageous often is retarded. You can make something memorable in:
1. The group do something different.
2. They are written well (must say I like the suggestion to be able to talk them into fighting each other.)
3. they make for a tough fight.

Stop trying so hard to be prestigious and have fun with this shit. No matter to what, supposedly prestigious, design by committee we decide on, nobody outside the Codex will get it and even most of the Codex newfags will miss it. On the other hand, if you do something outrageous, even if the outsiders will still not get it, the Codexers will still recognize some epic retard like Andhaira or Prosper and have a chuckle, even in a few years' time. This is not the time and place to go all prestigious.

1. Prosper should lead! Period. He could also be a gypsy man. The team should also have a scout that exaggerates and twists everything that he has seen. Other than that I approve your ideas for the team.

Relax, this happened with Wasteland 2 also.

Hopefully we'll hit the next stretch goal today.

The soul shit sounds retarded. Once more Obsidian trying to uber mature and grimdark.

OTOH, the flintlock guns are pure :incline: Hope we get to play as a gunslinger.

Wheellock guns. Flintlocks are too advanced for the era.

Age of Exploration is less used than Steampunk, and has the potential to be more interesting.

As for the souls thing, I'm all for it (well, at least what we know about it so far). None of this stupid dichotomy between magic and science. If something like magic existed, people would be trying to understand it and it would change their understanding of science and themselves.

Update #8 - New Digital Tier, Novella by Chris Avellone, and Translations at $2.2M

Update #8 · Sep. 24, 2012 · 64 comments

We are still going strong over here on Kickstarter and we wanted to thank everyone that has been here since the beginning as well as those of you who have come on recently to back us with your pledge. With such great support, we want to thank everyone with a new addition to the $50 and later tiers, a new $110 digital only tier, and a big change to our $2.2M stretch goal.
Oh, and what are we doing this week as to updates you might ask? Josh Sawyer, Tim Cain and Chris Avellone will be posting updates and videos all this week starting on Sep 26 with Josh, Sep 27 with Mr. Avellone and a great one from Tim over the weekend.
French, German, and Spanish Translations added at $2.2M
We are glad to announce that we will add text translations for French, German, and Spanish when we reach this goal. As we hit more of our stretch goals, we hope to be able to add even more languages as well!

Novella by Chris Avellone added for $50 and Up!
Chris Avellone has been so thankful for everyone's support that he himself has pledged to write a novella in the world of Project Eternity. We are adding that to everyone who pledges $50 and up.
New $110 Digital Only Tier
Thanks to popular demand, we are adding a new digital tier at $110 that has early beta access to the game, thanks in the credits, a postcard thanking you for your pledge (sent physically) along with all the other digital benefits of the $140 Tier. Since we added the new novella written by Chris Avellone at the $50 reward tier - that is in there as well!
Oh and we have a little piece of artwork to share as well. The following is one of our traditional race and class combinations - the Human Fighter - but he's not just any Human Fighter. He has an integral role in the story that we will be hinting at soon. Don't worry, we will also be sharing more and more of the non-traditional options in the days and weeks to come.
