ANYWAY....

After this less then inspiring visual representation - Lets refresh our knowledge about the MECHANICS OF STRONGHLOD

Bonuses
There are five bonuses you will receive for getting and upgrading your stronghold.

  1. Resting bonuses. Some of the upgrades to your stronghold will grant temporary bonuses to your attributes or non-combat skills when you rest there. As examples, you can build Training Grounds to improve your Strength or a Library to improve your Lore skill. Some of these upgrades are expensive, but you’re worth it.
  2. Adventures for idle companions. You will eventually have more companions than will fit in your party, so you will have leave some of them behind. While they are idling away at the stronghold, they can take part in their own adventures, earning additional experience for themselves and extra money, items and reputation bonuses for you!
  3. Ingredients. Many of the stronghold upgrades will generate ingredients used by non-combat skills. For example, Botanical Gardens create Survival ingredients over time, and a Curio Shop produces ingredients for use by both Lore and Mechanics.
  4. Special offers. Sometimes visitors to your stronghold will have rare items for sale, or perhaps they will offer you items in return for something else. Pay attention to these visitors. Some of these items may be nearly impossible to find any other way!
  5. Wealth. Don’t forget that by owning a stronghold, you also own all of the surrounding lands and impose a tax on all of the inhabitants. It will feel nice for a change to have someone recognize your high standing and give you the money that you so richly deserve.

These bonuses all sound great, right? Well, they are great, but they are just the passive benefits from owning and upgrading a stronghold. There are a lot of activities you can do too, once you take possession of your stronghold.

Activities
First and foremost, when you get your stronghold, you are going to want to upgrade it. Upgrades are improvements to various parts of the castle, usually to add to the security or prestige of the place. Security affects how much taxes you collect as well as helps reduce the number of “bad” random events, while prestige increases the number of “good” random events as well as increasing tax collections, too. Upgrades can also serve as prerequisites for other upgrades. For example, you cannot build your Training Grounds (and get your Strength bonus after resting at the stronghold) until you have repaired the inner bailey of the stronghold.

Every upgrade costs money and takes time to build, but as long as you have the prerequisites completed, you can have as many upgrades building simultaneously as you can afford. And you don’t have to wait at the stronghold while they are built, either. You can continue adventuring, and you will be notified when they are built.

You can begin collecting taxes from your populace as soon as you gain the stronghold. The amount of taxes you collect increases with your prestige (because people know of you and like you), but the amount also increases with higher security, since some taxes are lost to banditry. You will want to keep both of those values high.

You can also employ hirelings to stay at your stronghold. These people will provide bonuses to your prestige and security, but they cost money to employ. Some will leave your castle if you stop paying them, but others will wait around to get paid again (but not provide any bonuses until they are).

If you have cleared the dungeon and built a prison under your stronghold, then when you are fighting some of the named NPC’s in the game, you will be given an option to take them prisoner instead of killing them. Prisoners are kept in a cell in your prison, where you can visit them and talk to them, and occasionally use them as leverage later in the game. But you will need to keep your security level high, or you might suffer from a prison break!
Finally, several upgrades will produce ingredients used by non-combat skills. This feature, along with upgrades that can improve your skills, makes your stronghold a great place to craft and store items. You can stop by your castle occasionally and make food, potions, scrolls, armors and weapons, and any that you don’t need immediately can be stored in chests and other containers in a variety of places around the stronghold. You know, in case of an emergency.

Which brings us to random stronghold events.

Random Events
As you play the game after getting the stronghold, whether or not you are physically there, you will be told if a random event happens at the stronghold. Sometimes, you will need to deal with the event immediately, but usually you are given some time to decide what to do.

The most common event at your stronghold is having a visitor arrive. There are all kinds of visitors, but they all share one thing. They can adjust your prestige and/or security just by being at your stronghold. Some visitors are wonderful and give good bonuses, and you will want them to stay as long as possible. Some of these visitors can even be employed as hirelings and will stay on as long as you pay them. Others are not so great, and you will want to offer them one of your companions to act as an escort to their next location, or perhaps simply pay them to leave. Some visitors will offer rare items for sale, and some might even offer a very rare item in exchange for one of the prisoners in your dungeon. As you can see, visitors require some decision making on your part.

As mentioned above, your idle companions can take part in adventures as those events arise. You will be informed of what adventures are available, how long they will last, and what the rewards will be (in general terms). If you send a companion on an adventure, he or she is unavailable until they complete it and return with the rewards. You can recall any companions early, but then they earn nothing. Why would you ever want to recall them then? Because your stronghold can get attacked!

Attacks are the most potentially dangerous of all stronghold events. Occasionally troublemakers (of various sorts) will decide to attack your castle. You will be warned ahead of time of any such attack, so you can return to the stronghold and take part in it directly, if you want. Otherwise, the attack is simulated and you are told the results. A well-defended stronghold can repel any but the most concerted attacks, but there is always a chance of damage which can destroy upgrades, kill hirelings, and cost money. The threat of attacks is the most important reason to keep your security level as high as you can afford.

Now thats much better.
Only the castle seems to have been lost somewhere.

A posh English manor is not "a stronghold".

Dont like it at all.

Do you even know what a "posh English manor" looks like.

Pillars of Eternity reminds me of the name of the 6th Sword of Truth book. Make of that what you will.

I'm sort of curious about this game now. I don't have high expectations, but I'll check it out. Best case scenario: the generic setting is coupled with a less generic experience.

I'm a little surprised that so many are praising the graphics in that screenshot. I mean ... I guess they're high resolution. That's nice. But wow, talk about bland. Is it just me?

Not just you.

I have been butthurt a long time that PE's graphics came so close to my ideal of fixed camera, crystal clear 2d, only to blunder by not using a higher resolution.

Monitor resolutions are increasing, just like they increased from the 640x480 of Baldur's Gate. BG Enhanced Edition had upscaling to compensate. How did it look?

When you try to display PE's 1000 px wide screen on your new 2000 px wide monitor, it will be upscaled. Other games have 3d engines that can be set to higher resolutions, but PE has pre-rendered 2d backgrounds at a fixed resolution.

As far as that screenshot... I am sure that once the scene is animated (and lit with that fancy 2d lighting trickery they showed off earlier) and popluated with NPCs, it should look much better. It already looks pretty good but it should look great once its all set up.

For our higher resolution, we are likely going to render out to a ~2560x1440 screen size, as we did with our environment during the Kickstarter campaign.

I just love idiotic questions like this. Really.
It seems as if they imply something. Something like a scum retard that thinks i dont. And that presumptions stupid shithead certainty is oh so fucking inspiring.

Do you know what a question mark is newfag? how about a brain? IQ? Ring any bells?

Didnt think so.

Using a full stop instead of a question mark is a stylistic affectation that changes the tone of the sentence, from inquisitive question to sarcastic implication. You've sussed it out: I'm implying you have no idea what an English manor looks like, because the image doesn't look anything like an English manor. Nobody intelligent takes IQ seriously anymore.

Your comebacks need a lot of work. Didn't sting a bit. Wasn't even funny.

To quote a Roguey phrase, Project Dullsville appears to at least maintain consistency so far with its dull updates, dull art direction and dull ideas. Really getting the feeling that nobody will be saying the word "Kickstarter" in 2014.

What self respecting steward would let that many trees grow that close to the stronghold wall?

You just can't get good henchmen help these days.

Any good commander know enough to cut down EVERY TREES next to your walls. For one thing, they make a dandy places for the rogues to climb onto the wall in peace time. For another, in a siege, attackers can use them as ladder or platform for ladder to scale the wall. FAILURE No1.

Second: Maze, really? Amphitheatre is okay, since it can serve other purpose, such as rallying the populace. But fucking maze? This is a newly restored stronghold, not a fooking english manor for the last seventy years of peace. FAILURE No2.

Oh the prisoner in stronghold sounds interesting. Will there be an unlockable tourture interrogation skill? So that instead of just feeding them for free, could get some intel/quests.

Also hope there is an option to kill prisoners any time after thier incarceration. Imagine the butthurt of the visitor trying to bargain a prisoner's freedom...and you kill them while they propose it. Should have potential for interesting CnC.

Atleast one of them should be present...or I will probably not bother taking prisoners.

Also the tree maze is :retarded:

Generic fantasy? People are going to lap this stuff up. It's perfect for the mainstream.

Hiver, would you consider going on a trial of say 4mg of pimozide a day? I'll write you a perscription, no worries. In going over your posts, I can comfortably say that you've got some form of Tourette syndrome. Are you swearing out loud as you type, or just in your head? I'd wager a bit of both. The pimozide will help. You'll notice a difference in 3-4 weeks. You'll be a new person.

In going over that one post i can say youre just another imbecile that got butthurt because you got emotionally engaged with some stupid feature or visual representation i criticized or you thought something one of the other such imbeciles vomited was right, which made you butthurt again so the only way your pathetic brain can deal with it is to come in and make a stupid statement, in which you are of course convinced - because you are stupid, - in attempt to "hurt my feelings" which makes you a blatant, cheap, laughable stupid shit who is just repeating that specific imbecilic thought process.

And there we go... yet another stupid retard spinning in a loop.

some clonidine would be useful too, i think, from all the frothing at the mouth and all
lobotomy is the only answer. preferably executed by butthurt morons.

The stronghold mechanics sound quite nice, though they could benefit greatly from some additional moral diversity. In the interest of promoting alternate alignment justice, it ought to be possible for the player to bleed the peasants dry by imposing excessive taxes, torture and execute prisoners for good measure and dispatch companions on tasteful enrichment expeditions to pillage surrounding lands, bringing in wealth, supplies, slaves and other such phat lewt in the process.

I wonder if using the word pillars was an attempt to call back to Baldur's Gate with an architecture theme.

Instead of pushing enormous amounts of detail for ultra-high resolutions that few players use (or will be using in the immediate future), I'd rather target the most common resolutions at the low and high ends, which Steam overwhelmingly shows are 1366x768 and 1920x1080 -- and get as many high quality areas done as we can.

That KS post does imply a high-res mode, you're right. But, according to the soothsayers in the thread above, in the future 2560x1440 is upscaled blur city. I just think Obsidian missed an opportunity to show off some really crisp 2d backgrounds. It killed the buzz I got from the initial decision to use pre-rendered 2d.

I have been butthurt a long time that PE's graphics came so close to my ideal of fixed camera, crystal clear 2d, only to blunder by not using a higher resolution.

When you try to display PE's 1000 px wide screen on your new 2000 px wide monitor, it will be upscaled. Other games have 3d engines that can be set to higher resolutions, but PE has pre-rendered 2d backgrounds at a fixed resolution.

I guess it will be slightly less of a problem with PE than "real", "pixel-for-pixel" 2D games as the finished backgrounds are actually rendered on a flat plane in 3D with orthographic projection so technically, it should be possible to zoom in and out the devs willing and the scene quality permitting. Likewise, swapping certain textures in and out for higher-res replacements should be far easier.

The real ideal, and rather utopic, thing would be to provide the source 3D scenes at some point, the multi-pass finishing touches for 2D backgrounds to be made with vector graphics during development and a tool to compile and rebuild game scenes for future proofing so players could recompile the game in higher resolutions in the future. They have all the resources to do it that way.

Since they are in full control this time around and digital downloads will likely be the major source to get the game, I'm very much hoping that they will at the very least provide higher resolution files post-release.

One sad thing is that 3D can be made to look just as good and lyrical as 2D (though obviously at a higher cost of hardware requirements, compatibility and QA) but developers always use retarded shit to make their 3D isometric games look worse as if they have to, particularly with the perspective depth and fancy shaders.

Even PE could be made in 3D entirely and still incite that nostalgic feel from IE games. We already know that they are building 3D tile blocks for the environment (though some of those seem to come with more polies than practicle in real-time for an isometric game) and then render them in 2D with multiple passes for lights and finishing touches. They could, instead, stick to 3D and stick with orthographic projection ie. what they should have done in the first place with NWN2+Expansions.

Thinking again, is there anything at all that sets PE apart from NWN2 other than that it is 2D?

Hmmm, rather than continue to search for information about this I'll just page Roguey to settle the matter +M

I don't think they're going to scale anything. If you use a different resolution than the target resolution it will just be like picking a higher resolution in BG2, everything will be smaller.
