That only incentives users to come up with passwords they can easily remember, which are often short and noncomplex, so you just make matters worse. It is the same reason why required password lengths stopped increasing in size years ago.

That's not true, *all the authentication apps provide backup auth codes that you can store anywhere and that you can use in case of losing access to your phone for whatever reason. There are also various possible problems with e-mail delivery that don't exist with the app solutions, so I strongly recommend using an app over e-mail. Of course, not being an idiot and not saving your provided backup codes somewhere secure as well.

You must've meant the Xenforo backup codes that are 10 unique strings of numbers you can use only once. The apps have nothing to do with that.

Authy has a reputation of having been hacked at least twice, collects telemetry, your email and phone number, and doesn't support code hive exporting. It's purely cloud-based.

Possible that the backup codes are on XF's end, I wasn't paying that much attention. The admins here can restore access for anyone if needed (with proper proof), so that's not really much of a concern in any event.

And yes, Authy has had issues in the past, but as was pointed out, there are plenty of other auth apps if you don't want to use it for whatever reason.

What if the company that handles that software goes belly-up?

Sometimes 2FA gives you the secret key, sometimes they just give you a QR code. You can use any QR code decoder to get the secret key you need

Do you know of any other way to use a QR code reader than with a smart phone?
