Also felipepepe considering that you researched many non English cRPG's for your book, have you ever heard about one made in Greece? Greece is quite an attractive setting for games but ironically i never heard about RPG made by the Greeks themselves.

Honestly, what I found is that very few countries ever developed commercial RPGs... everyone made local RPG Maker titles and Flash stuff, but getting a commercial engine or creating one from zero was really out of reach for most countries until very recently. The few countries that had game dev scenes would often focus on other genres, especially FPS, RTS and Adventure games. Once game engines became more accessible and digital distribution became a thing, they shifted to mobile.

Looking at Brazil, we had text-adventures in the 80s, then platformers & adventure games in the 90s. The 2000s brought in all kinds of games, including several MMOs, but no single-player PC RPG. I think our first one was Dungeonland, in 2013! We had Knights of Pen & Paper in 2012, but it was a mobile game later ported to PCs. CRPGs are simply not part of the local culture. We have a strong tabletop scene, but when they adapted Tormenta (a popular local setting) to video games they made it a beat'em up lol

That Iran and the Philippines each made 001 PC RPG(s) in the 2000s is kind of a miracle.

I just did it, there's ~500 mentioned by name (with many more from random sites of devs) The vast majority are just random trashed thrown in for any reason, let's see how many survive when I go through and curate for actual rpgs. I'm adding them to the RPG list (I've done at least 20 of them already months ago), and will probably add the curated list here.

How did you even come across this game? I'm fascinated when I come across a game developed in a country with virtually no relavence to game development. Hell, I get excited when I find an RPG developed somewhere like Slovenia. I feel like the only way to find them is to have some very obscure knowledge because you're from the country, luckily stumble upon it or speak the language and be able to search for it better (if a game even exists).

Yeah, I feel the same. Some you can find on websites like old-games.ru if you scratch the bottom of the barrel, but this one I only found because a dude from Iran emailed me to suggest I add it to the book. Sadly, I had already sent it to the printer, but I want to at least mention it on the next PDF update.

BTW, Iran made actually a lot of games! There's this YouTube channel where the guy plays mostly Iranian stuff, there's Action games, Adventures, RTS, etc: https://www.youtube.com/@TheGamian/videos

Apparently, there's a second Iranian RPG called تراتئون / Thrateon, from around 2013, but I'm not really sure if it's an actual RPG or just an Action game with dialogues:

It seems Greek industry is still struggling.

There have been a lot of games made in Greece but they are pretty much all made by tiny teams and solo developers. Back in early/mid-2000s or so we made an attempt in a forum i was on to catalogue all of them and we found more than 150 games, several being in platforms like Amiga, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, etc. Sadly the forum is long gone and wasn't captured by archive.org. There is a new attempt by a recently formed gamedev association, but it still hasn't provided any results (publicly at least) and i have a feeling that they'll focus on more recent times as that is easier to find nowadays.

As for RPGs, sadly i can't think of anything. As Lord_Potato mentioned, adventures were incredibly popular here - not just among developers, but among gamers too (and developers really made adventure games because they liked them), but even the closest to an RPG, the Darkfall MMORPG, was originally started in Norway :-P.

I think finally solved this mystery!

Ok, so Age of Paladins came out in 2007, called عصر پهلوانان. In 2009 it got a stand-alone expansion called عصر پهلوانان: رویین تنی , aka Age of Pahlevans 1.5.

I thought 1.5 was just a sort of Enhanced Edition / Director's Cut since it looks exactly the same, with the same character in the same city, but watching Let's play videos I noticed that the 2007 version begins with a fire attack in the city, while the 2009 one has you going to fight scorpions outside. So it's not that they changed the order of the quests, they have entirely different quests. I believe this is the "Undying" sequel that Wikipedia mentions because I can't find anything else.

Mensk (Менск)
White Legion rises. Probably the only game in the Belarusian language, named after the old name of Minsk. It's basically a comedic pseudo-RPG roguelike with ASCII graphics. Your character is part of the rocker subculture and gets fed up with Gopniks & Skinheads, so he becomes a superhero and goes on with the goal of destroying the local club that houses most of these guys. Instead of health potions, you drink beer to replenish. If you don't drink any beer you die of alcohol deprivation. That gameplay element is actually more in depth than it initially appears, with different types of beer giving different effects, which you can then use as a weapon after drinking it. It's set in one city that has a few buildings, a government office, a subway and the club you need to destroy. Combat is real-time where the enemies move with you, without a pattern when you're out of sight, and will chase you if you come close/enter hostile areas.

Cleansing Hjovard (Зачистка Хьёрварда)
Another roguelike, this time Russian. The plot is based on some novel, typical going to another land and cleansing evil. Yet another featuring ASCII graphics, however this one has it's RPG mechanics much more fleshed out than Mensk and has permadeath. The game will describe the terrain and area you're in while you're there, with a pretty big map composed of 5x5 areas.

Remembered a bizarre one, The Desolate Hope (2012):

It's a very weird mix of adventure game segments with a little robot inside a dying space station. He then explores multiple worlds in a platformer kind of way, finally battling enemies in a JRPG-like turn-based combat. It's the sequel to a similar, smaller-scale project called The Desolate Room, from 2007.

Oh, and they were all made by the guy who later did Five Nights at Freddy's lol

Has anyone played this? I'm just trying to figure out how combat is and how strong the RPG elements are but god damn all I can find is the same copy-pasted generic blurb about the setting.

I started playing through Elysian Fields and...well let's just say there's a reason it's obscure. In just 3 screens I stumbled upon 5 random encounters, combat is turn based but has no depth at all, just healing and striking before you yourself get killed, and I was only fighting slimes. For a game that supposedly took months to make, the writing feels like something I would've done when I was 7 years old and that's not an exaggeration. Maybe it gets better, will see, but the intro does not give a good impression. I think I will be able to put together a party eventually. For some reason I have the urge to defeat this game so I will keep going lol

Well I did complete it a while ago so you don't have to . And yes there's nothing else, it's a long corridor and I think you eventually control 3? characters, don't take too much time and you'll get to have to use your consumables and barely win at least (I'm not sure you can win if you never ever get back to the last town though'). There are several repositories with these QBasic games (but many are only demos) which don't completely overlap like http://www.petesqbsite.com/downloads/rpg.shtml (the average rating here is hilarious) and https://games.phatcode.net/dumpbyinput.php?input=RPG&mode=2. I don't remember why I stopped playing Dark Ages 1, I think it's a Dragon Quest 1 clone but I completed the sequel (http://www.dk-software.com/da2.html) which is almost OK but combat lacks variety. Dark Phear was reuploaded here by the creator : https://cmcgames.itch.io/darkphear. In The Nocturne seemed to be made with RPG Maker, maybe it should not even be there, the two problems are that you control only one character so combat is not as good as it might be (it's vaguely OK) and exploration is not good, presentation is decent in this one though'. Quest (the second game in the list named this way) could have been a decent Dragon Quest 1 (you control only one character) clone with basic combat but decent exploration but for me interactions with environement stopped working as I entered the first cave I think so I can't play it further and it's likely nobody can. Finally you probably should not try Tower of Fortune because it'll make you sad, what you can play of this one is by far the best I got from these but I'm almost sure you can't get past the first dungeon.

Sadly i get black screen on startup, which hangs up my pc so i have to unlog with alt+ctrl+del. Tried fixes from pcgamingwiki and it does not work.

Did you got it to work later? On version that i found, i had to use Gorasul_noov.exe instead of Gorasul.exe and then it started. Sadly menu was a bugged mess but you could progress further to character creation, then it crashed on the second page.
