Alright, here's my mini review for what it's worth.
Disclaimer: I haven't played the original, so I don't know how this remake stacks up. I do know of the original through general osmosis, seeing clips and parts of Let's Plays and so on, and my first impression is that the characters are way stronger this time around. The biggest improvement is probably Ashley, who is no longer "HALP LEON", but actually kind of cool and likeable. I enjoyed her back and forth with Leon and how their relationship grew throughout the game. Leon is also cool but significantly toned down compared to his RE4OG iteration. Fewer one liners (though they're still there), more stoicism, which is probably in line with how these remakes tend to be in general. One aspect I really enjoyed about him is how little of a shit he gives. On more than one occasion, he'd shoot the villains right as they began to monologue while telling them to shut the fuck up, which was always hilarious.
My favorite character is definitely Luis. I understand he has been given a larger role in the game this time around, and I think he is utilised really well and works nicely as a side kick and foil to Leon. He's played as the 'rogue with a heart of gold' archetype - the Han Solo to Leon's Luke, if you will - and it works surprisingly well. Considering he seems kind of unlikable and shallow at first, he ends up having a surprising amount of depth.
The villains are memorable enough, especially Ramon, but as someone else pointed out, some of their characterization may be missing because the Codec calls are mostly gone (unfortunately resulting in Leon's best one liner - "you right hand comes off?" - being left out). This also affects Hannigan, who is barely a character. I forgot she even existed several times, although I don't know how much of a presence she had in the OG.
The gameplay is, in my opinion, excellent. By gameplay I mostly mean the gunplay and combat. Kicking, shooting, stabbing and parrying ganados is fucking satisfying and has crunchiness and weight to it. I never get tired of seeing their heads explode, their arms flying off, the way a well placed shotgun blast or grenade will reduce them to a red mist. The enemy variety is also great and keeps you on your toes (though I suspect this is nothing new compared to the original) and each weapon (except maybe the Bolt Thrower) is useful in one way or another and has its own distinct feel to it. All in all, I'd say this is one of the best horror games ever purely from a gameplay perspective. They could have easily made a really solid third person action game based on these gameplay mechanics alone, which I remember thinking about Resident Evil 2 remake as well.
The resource management, exploration and everything perifiral to the meat and potatoes gameplay works as a nice way to contextualise things and break the combat sections up, but there is obviously nothing too challenging to any of it (except maybe the resource management, which I will get to). The puzzles are piss easy, and I don't recall a single one taking more than two minutes to solve. Im not necessarily against this, just mentioning it if someone thought they'd be playing a 200 IQ game for some reason.
I played on hardcore, which I felt struck the perfect balance. There were certainly times where enemy numbers got overwhelming and where I was very low on ammo and healing items, but never to a point where I was downright softlocked or wanted to tear my hair out. I've heard people (mostly on Reddit) complain that hardcore is too hard, which I find utterly ridiculous when it's called fucking hardcore. Capcom could've probably even upped it a few notches for maximum survival horror edginess. Professional (the additional difficulty that you unlock after completing the game) is pretty brutal to the point I actually had to quit it, unless you play it in New Game +, where it's a total cakewalk because you get to keep your fully upgraded weapons without the enemies actually becoming significantly harder.
The presentation is excellent as well. I thought the same about REmake 2 and 3 (and to a lesser degree 7 and 8), so take it for what you will. The village looks creepy and dilapidated, the monsters are wonderfully twisted and disgusting, the music is mostly ambient but suitable and the voice acting - especially Ashley's and Ramon's - is really great.
The game takes about 20-25 hours to complete if you're taking your sweet time, so it's also one of the longest games in the remake era (especially compared to that hackjob 3). The game doesn't dip in quality towards the end either, which one might have feared.
All in all, I'd say this is a solid 8/10 and I'd definitely play bingo again.
