Resident Evil Village - now featuring giant vampire MILFs

RE3make was a million times better than this garbage. I'm just walking around with a baby in my arms. This is, as of right now, the worst game ever made.

Pretty much everything that was classic about RE7 and RE2 remake was thrown out of the window. It's a RE4 clone. And despite the game being much more action-focused than RE7, the combat sucks. The AI is pretty bad and the enemies don't have a lot of interesting moves, guns feel weak, hit reactions are inconsistent - just like in RE2-3 remakes, sometimes the enemy flinches, but sometimes just tanks you gunshots (even headshots). Say what you will about RE4, but the combat feel was spectacular - great animations, great enemy variety, visceral melee and gunplay with consistent hit reactions. RE8 has none of that.

The level design took a sharp nosedive. The game no longer features a big interconnected mansion-type location, the closest thing is Dimitrescu castle and it's quite linear. At first glance it may look open, but the illusion shatters just a few minutes into exploration - it's structured like a Skyrim dungeon. Most of the time as soon as you find a key item the level loops back with a convenient shortcut, so there's no need to backtrack. Due to the linear nature of level design, the stalker enemy functions similarly to RE3 remake Nemesis and only "stalks" you in a very limited amount of rooms (in this case just the castle's hall). There are no save rooms too, you just stumble upon typewriters and merchant every now and then.

The inventory space management is gone. There are no item boxes, the story items don't take space and are now divided into "keys" submenu. Never in all of those 9 hours of gameplay I was bothered with the lack of space and was forced to drop something, the inventory may as well be unlimited. It's even worse than it was in RE4, because this time components such as herbs don't take space too, and are shifted into a separate crafting menu.

RE4 was famous for being quite long and having a perfect pace, it regularly introduced the new stuff and was never boring. Unfortunately, RE8 kinda fails here too, mostly because devs added a bunch of optional secrets that aren't really secrets since they are marked on your map. Because of them you constantly deviate from the main story for prolonged detours where you scrounge through the village for treasures and weapon upgrades, which is pretty boring since you don't actually search the environments, you just walk to a map marker and use some recently found key item like a crank handle.

The enemy variety kinda lacks here too. It is a bit better than it was in RE7, but still not great, especially since each of the major locations (village, castle and factory) features only two types of trash enemies - lycans (regular and armored), vampires (regular and flying) and tetsuo the iron men (regular and armored).

The only thing that's 100% win is the art direction and the environmental variety. The titular village, the castle, fromsoftware swamp and other locations all look and feel amazing. Too bad they are kinda squandered on a linear popamole rather than a slow horror with puzzles and backtracking. Just imagine exploring Dimitrescu castle with fixed camera angles! What a waste.

Another thing that i liked was a short, PT-inspired segment in Beneviento's house. Hell, Capcom can into atmosphere when they want to, too bad apparently they weren't interested in making the game scary.

---

tl;dr - not great, not terrible. Better than RE3 Remake, worse than RE2 Remake. I'd rate this game 2.5/5 and probably put it on par with Revelations 1 and The Evil Within 1.

I'm not the one simping for a series I hate, bitch boi

I'm not simping for anything I hate. If I hated RE I wouldn't be here, but Crapcom continue to disregard what the actual RE fans want and instead give us this Annabelle Bloodborne shit that nobody asked for and keep giving fan service to RE4 wimps like you. It's not my fault they completely fumbled the ball with the recent RE2 (but RE3 especially). This VILLAGE garbage is an even bigger fumble. I wanted those games to be good and a return to form but Crapcom just don't have what it takes to do it right. It's sad!

Well 92% positive user ratings says the fanbase has gotten exactly what they wanted. You still can argue its design direction but don't pretend you're a spokesperson for a group of people that obviously disagrees with you.

Avoided reading most of that Wunderbar bcus spoilers. I disagree with your last point. RE3make was a pretty frabjous action game. This one is a cinematic baby holding simulater mostly. I am disgust. Will play more tomorrow when able.

there were no story spoilers there.

I probably meant spoilers that the game sucks. The decline weakens me everytime. I was hoping for something great.

Edit

I read your whole post. Based off your description, this sounds like exactly the same game that Evil Within 2 was. Some lazy "open world" segments hamfisted into a mediocre scripted action/horror game. That's disappointing if true.

By the way, the "adaptive difficulty" is very evident here. I played on Hardcore, and was constantly struggling with resources, except my struggles weren't a fun type of struggle, I just felt cheated. "Oh, that's a nice hundred of pistol rounds you have here, it would be a shame if the next couple of lycans will suddenly become much tankier than usual and soak all of your ammo". And the opposite is true too - if you're scarping the bottom of a barrel, the bosses can still be killed easily because there are additional supplies lying around the arena. Because of that, i stopped worrying about being resourceful, stopped trying to aim for the head, stopped walking around with orange healthbar - just blasted enemies in the torso and healed as much as i wanted - once i was low on ammo, enemies started dropping gunpowder and scrap, once i was low on health the enemies started dropping herbs and bottles of chem fluid.

Shit way to balance the difficulty, at least RE4 was better at hiding it.

Just me drunkenly talking about the potential of a true open world survival horror game. I would give anything for such a thing if done correctly. It wont be. A man can dream of possibleness

Most of the overworld areas in TEW2 were indeed "open-world" by any stretch of the definition though. Not sure how that matches Wonderbra's description of the mansion in 8.

TEW2's open locations are way more open than Dimitrescu's castle.

I started this on hardcore and the village attack with the huge monster is kicking my ass. Is it just this part that's hard? Should I try and overcome it? I read that normal is too easy so that's why I want to play on hardcore.

Raskens it's just a poorly designed encounter. I played on Hardcore and this was the only really hard moment in the entire game. I died there like 20 times there.

The trick is to:
- get a shotgun, knife all loot boxes and collect scrap/gunpowder/chems;
- run down the river to trigger the big hairy guy, then run back into the house with a radio;
- use all collected scrap to craft ammo, wait there and defend yourself;
- after a certain amount of time the fight will end with a scripted event where Ethan gets captured.

The problem is that on Hardcore there might be a bug or some additional condition, because i was running around for minutes and it never ended.

Out of curiosity, I started watching this. Impressions of the first half-hour:
- The baby & family shit is a cringefest like nothing I've seen, it's David Cage-level
- The comments made while walking around the village "Step-village, what are you doing...?" cracked me up with their absurdity.

Don't be degenerates, stop watching streams. The game isn't all that great, but that doesn't mean you can just watch some twitch parasite and claim that you know how the game plays.

"Oh, i watched some stream and you know what? the gaem is boring, player just walks around aimlessly!"

Get out of here.

Can't stand streamers, I'm watching MkIceAndFire because it's silent. I don't know why, it's a mixture of curiosity and disgust. The way the zombie is waiting for him to reload, the way it bites half his hand off and a moment later he reloads the gun with it... what sort of retard finds fun in this?

The key to survive the lycan assault at the beginning of the game is using the two red barrels to kill a bunch of lycans (One barrel is inside the stable with the ladder, the other is in the opening near the red gate). Getting some enemies killed will trigger the moment where some lycans start shooting with crossbows and firing up everything. Once this happens you have to survive 30 to 60 secs until a cinematic triggers stopping the fight. It's pretty bad balanced on hardcore and beyond, but once you know the trick is bearable.

I'm liking the game a lot, but it has nothing to with VII and REmake 2. It's not a survival horror. It leans more to the RE4 formula, though its still has decent level desing and exploration. The bad thing is that the campaign takes you from one place to another in a linear fashion, streamlining the riddles and not encouraging enough backtracking

I keep thinking how the game could've been much better if devs just took one setting and made a game around it. Currently RE Village is a kitchen sink of Universal horror / Hammer films (Village - Wolfman, Dimitrescu Castle - Dracula, Beneviento Manor - Woman in Black, Moreau Swamp - Creature from the Black Lagoon, Heisenberg Factory - Frankenstein) where each of those settings is half-assed.

From what I've seen, the action looks thoughtless compared to RE4. Just walk forward and pop moles in the most basic way possible. Believe it, or not?
