The worst example of that I've seen recently is when people say, "Can you borrow me a pencil?"

Also, "I could care less".

Time for me to indulge myself with the only poemI know by heart:

a sensible fellow

when I fart
my cat could care
less.

Jaime's thread is better anyway.
You're such a killjoy.
I do my best.

On topic, the most annoying grammar mistakes are:
could've
would've
should've

I had a high school English teacher once who pretty much pounded the hatred for those three into my mind.

To try to get this thread back on topic again, what exactly is technically wrong with those three?

Also, is anyone anal enough to get annoyed by people not putting the apostrophe in 'plane?

How people have the nerve to call Volourn and myself morons, when you make a list of 'RPGs' like this, I simply cannot understand.

Be more specific with your complaint.

According to the common usage of the term "RPG" those games are all classified as "RPGs". I thought about excluding tactical rpgs from my list, but then I realized I'd be leaving out all the best games. And besides, redefining words that are currently in common usage leads to confusion, rather than facilitating communication.

And those games are pretty much all regarded as having great gameplay by most people who like that sort of gameplay. And I'm the kind of person who prefers gameplay where you get to think a little over dialog where you just read some (usually bad) fiction and then guess which answer will provide the most goodies.

They're not real words. They're incorrect. Correct use would be should have, could have, would have.

The language is evolving, whether you like it or not. Saying the same thing with less letters could be seen as a development for the better as long as it does not ruin the semantics of the already established word. After all, it would save ink, paper and time.

Strange, last time I heard those words was when computers started taking office space, and the outcome was a thousand times the opposite. Damn I hate remembering things.

Usually within 100 yards of a computer
2008: None, although I will likely get around to purchasing Fallout 3 when they release a GOTY edition in 2009 or 2010. Can I vote for it then?

Best RPG of all time: Two Worlds (so sue me)
2nd: Morrowind
3rd: Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines (If the last quarter of the game wasn’t a first person shooter, it would have made 2nd place.)
Honorable mention: The usual suspects (Arcanum, etc.), plus Jade Empire.

Just because someone invented an accessible way to write things down doesn't mean that simplifying the language will have the same result.

So they're not so much incorrect, as simply not accepted. I thought there might be some technicality in the use of the apostrophe that made them unacceptable contractions. I was never really taught grammar at school (thanks British comprehensive education. Comprehensive it most certainly was not).

Torment: Tides of Numenera
RPGs released in 2008:
I'll reserve my judgement until I finish Storm of Zehir and play some other games I intend to play.

Best RPGs of all time:

1. Planescape: Torment
Superb story, NPCs, character interaction, dialogues and atmosphere. The game itself is a huge character generator, building (or rather, discovering) your character both literally and figuratively. It is great example of integrating the story and the game mechanics (gaining experience = remembering). Planescape: Torment was a game that made me care about the characters. In one moment you are laughing at Morte's jokes and in another moment you're contemplating the meaning of life and the planes. Game world and characters really became alive in PS:T.

2. Fallout
If I wanted to define a computer role-playing game in one word, I would say Fallout. All essential RPG elements are implemented in this game, and they are implemented very well. For me, Fallout is a standard according to which I measure other computer RPGs. Unfortunately, almost no game has reached that standard. A game with Fallout's design elements with additional depth in story, dialogues and character interaction (e.g. like in MOTB) is something that game developers should strive to achieve. I think that I'm going to replay it as soon as I finish SoZ.

3. Fallout 2
Fallout 2 expands on Fallout's design, with the same strong points like the character / skill system implementation, combat, quest design and character interaction, adds a small but significant interface improvement (pushing the characters out of the way), there is significant additional content - there are more areas to explore and problems to solve than in Fallout. However, Fallout 2 has deviated from the setting more than a bit (e.g. New reno, which is incidentally the best part of the game), making the game rather inconsistent compared to Fallout. Also, the Enclave / the President / Frank Horrigan can't compare to the Master. With all its shortcomings, only two games better than Fallout 2 have been made so far.

Nearly made the cut (in no particular order):

Arcanum - it has almost all strong points of Fallout, except for combat, which was horrible enough to keep it out of top 3.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer - Story, dialogues, characters and their interaction are not quite as good as in PS:T, but are the next best thing. I loved the Spirit Eater feature and how that essential story element was implemented in game mechanics. Choices and consequences are there as well and the Influence system is a great feature, which needs further improvement (it has been improved with respect to KOTOR 2). However, NWN 2 combat leaves a lot to be desired and thanks to it MOTB stays out of top 3.

Honorable mention: KOTOR 2 (with TSLRP), Vampire: Bloodlines, Baldur's Gate 2, Ultima 7

Wow, Fallout 3, huh? What do you think about the writing and general characters overall? Considering the fantastic work Obsidian does with Characterizations and plot lines, how do you think it fares? :)
