All the games in the list are either utter dogshit or just relatively obscure indies that aren't just up to a GOTY standard.

Would've voted for tekken. :smug:

If anything like Skald wins the GOTY it’s just a statement of how RPG horrible this year was.
SKALD is one of the few games that actually achieved what it intended. It wasn't bloated, it wasn't trying to make a point, it just wanted to be a classic RPG. That's more than you can say for Avowed, Veilguard and the other Infinitron Goyslop.

Drova: 5 (would give this a 4 in a better year)
SKALD: 4
Elden Ring DLC: 4
Dread Delusion: 2 (very cool graphic style, very shit everything else)

SKALD is okay
I rated it three, because of its over-reliance on the lovecraftian themes and boring builds that lack any variety at all.
It could have been much better with true free exploration, less linear plot, more vanilla fantasy setting and more nuanced builds (and less gimmicky aesthetics).

And then it wouldn't have achieved the same quality. Less is more.

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
What a depressing year. The best RPG I've played was DD2 and that's a p. damning statement.

Haven't played Skald or Drova yet tho, seems one of those is gonna win. From everything I've read I think I won't be able to get through the first two hours of Skald and I'm gonna love Drova to bits.

Drova & Shiren the Wanderer got my only 5* votes.

Drova I played right through to completion, 30hrs quick, easy, and super enjoyable. Shiren is an awesome mystery dungeon series and Serpent Coil is the best of them.

Wayfinder isn't in. It won't be a GOTY contender but it's more serviceable than half of the list.

You can play it in English with the XUnity.AutoTranslator , it works well enough. But yeah, the game is mid.

Yep. Gave that one a five, too.

ASTLIBRA's and Elden Ring's DLCs probably deserve full marks, too, but I chose to give just one game a perfect score, so those two get a 4.

Other games I played all scored 3 or below. Geneforge 2 looks like it could deserve a 4, but I haven't played it yet.

the problem is with rewarding exploration, because loot is mostly random you barely can find anything that wasn't already present in shops
That aspect is same in the original game
Overworld loot in both DD1 and 2, only serves two purposes: shit to sell to make money ; acquiring materials for equipment upgrades and alchemy
Very occasionally you might find a chest with some new equipment, but that's quickly upstaged by the better gear shops will get in the next act of the campaign (plus all chests respawn their loot after some days, which further reinforces that overworld loot is just meant to be sold if it isn't some material the player is in need of)

Basically, the rewards for exploration are money, exp and the fights themselves
As far as i remember there was only this wizard Mason with his magical book quest
There's also the shopkeeper of the Black Cat, the travelling merchant, the owner of the barber shop, the jail keeper, various guards in general and some civillians
Also lol if you think that just because i hate furries i dont want fantasy races in fantasy rpgs.
Beast Man races have been an enduring staple in role-playing videogames since at least the early 90s and the trope itself is much older than that in fantasy fiction (both instances literally predate the modern furry phenomenon)
So it is somewhat unlikely someone likes the idea of fantasy races if they seemingly "hate" something as classic as beastfolk
