Uf, RPG Watch does not approve.
That place sure has changed, that thread manages to be more edgy & spiteful than the Codex... I liked them more when they were a bunch of chill dads playing Spiderweb games.
By edgy & spiteful you mean they made an accurate assessment of the list.

I'd like to see the correlation between users' ratings for Elden Ring and whether they played KOTC2.

Is the kind of person who plays KOTC2 more stingy with his ratings (for Elden Ring and also in general)?
Don't let anyone say I never did anything for you. :P

Let me know if you need any help interpreting it or if you want me to send you the Excel file. Don't open this spoiler unless you want to see, it's long af.

Edited to add a few explanations of the columns up top since I just realized it's not necessarily intuitive.

Dadd you might be interested in this too with the questions you were asking in the other thread.

The numbers are the ranks people gave the game.
Played is the sum of the 1-5 ratings.
Played ER is the number of people who played Elden Ring who also played the game in this row.
Played KC2 is the number of people who played Knights of the Chalice 2 who also played the game in this row.
Average is the average of all ratings from 1-5 for that game.
Average ER is the average of all ratings from 1-5 given for that game from people who played Elden Ring.
Average KC2 is the average of all ratings from 1-5 given for that game from people who played Knights of the Chalice 2.

I basically just did this to satisfy Infinitron's curiosity since it was an interesting question and he does a lot for the site.

Uf, RPG Watch does not approve.
That place sure has changed, that thread manages to be more edgy & spiteful than the Codex... I liked them more when they were a bunch of chill dads playing Spiderweb games.
By edgy & spiteful you mean they made an accurate assessment of the list.

Sounds like they mostly were making fun of the Elf Impregnation game, which to be fair, is funny.

But polls are serious business okay?

Also got nothing against the 'watch but wtf?

FF7 Intergrade isn't a remake, it's a sequel. Saying it "changed" any aspect of ff7 is mind-bogglingly retarded.

They wanted a straight-forward remake and not what it is (a retelling that wildly diverges).

If only kotc 2 had pixel art graphics like the first one, it would be an easy win.

Nah, the design's all wrong. Knights of the Chalice was good because Pierre copied Against the Giants and Scourge of the Slave Lords, classic D&D modules. A campaign created whole cloth from his own mind turned out to be a powerbuild-oriented mess.

Big titty elves and the impregnation thereof is far more compelling than muh souls #9619 "find and replace 'chosen undead' with 'brave tarnished'".

Thats exactly what it is, he probably put in disorder various ideas he had and played in his pen and paper sessions, its completely incoherent without any real plot at all not unlike that art direction. Its strictly combat encounters, more like a combat gauntlet, which is also fine and a way to do rpgs . But we could have both the plot and story and tactical encounters. It's an hobbyist work experimenting things and still doing it, not a commercial product.

I do not believe anybody on the codex wanted a straight-forward remake of a classic RPG that was already nigh-perfect. And calling it a retelling when the plot is about Sephiroth time traveling from the end of FF7 (1997) and deciding to change the past is reductive, the two games are meant to be played one after another. For it to be a remake/re-telling/anything of the sort I argue it would have to stand on its own independent of the original, which it absolutely doesn't do - everything about its plot hinges on the player having an intimate recollection of the prior game, ghosts literally spring from the ground and try to censor you when you perform actions that run contrary to the previous game's story!

And yet there they are in the Remake thread. Squeenix marketing is to blame regarding expectations:

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE is a reimagining of the iconic original with unforgettable characters, a mind-blowing story, and epic battles.
The story of this first, standalone game in the FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE project covers up to the party’s escape from Midgar, and goes deeper into the events occurring in Midgar than the original FINAL FANTASY VII.

This doesn't say "this is a follow-up to the original game."

Sekiro has a thousand times better combat system than ER
Elden Ring ... combat is utter shit, the proper way to play it (via timed parries or rolls or whatever) is broken because bosses have tracking, infinite stamine, jump around like fleas, and have unpredictable attack patterns with feints and delays mixed in with ultra-fast 3 frame animation attacks.

People's expectations are their own business. Thus always to people who pay attention to marketing.

I can see how someone from the outside might think that Sekiro and ER combats are similar, because yes, the bosses in Sekiro also have some of those negative things. But there are a few key differences that make all the difference.

The main thing is, in Sekiro, deflecting (parrying) does not have some tiny iframe window. It's fairly generous, so basically if you see the enemy about to hit you and deflect, most times it will work. In ER, like in Dark Souls games, the parrying window is tiny, only a few frames long, so the parry has to be super precise.

Sekiro also doesn't have the silly shit introduced in DaS 2-3 and continued in ER, which is known as the parry delay.

Finally, the bosses in Sekiro, even the ones with many different kinds of attacks, do not switch particular attacks up. So if an attack works like this, it will always work like this. So it's a matter of memorization, but once you get their pattern down, you got it. In ER, bosses would routinely alternate a similar type of attack between feints, attacks, delays, etc.

These differences add up to the fact that in Sekiro, although it is more demanding on reflexes than say DaS1, it's possible with enough experience and memorization to react to every enemy appropriately even if your reflexes aren't elite. In ER, it's just not.

In 2022, we only got 1 RPG in the top 5.
The genre is dead, it's over.
Although the 5th game has a good title for a solid RPG.
Now showing HP in the character screen is enough to qualify a game as RPG.

Eh, I'd see what happens after the aftereffects of the coof are done with. 2022 was a shit year for RPGs though. I loved Elden Ring, but in any reasonably good year for RPGs, I probably wouldn't have even ranked it as an RPG. I tend not to rank other Souls likes as RPGs.

That being said, ER feels way more like an actual RPG than the other Souls games, and I'd say that if action RPG crapola like Gothic, Risen, and Twitcher are RPGs, so is Elden Ring. Conversely if they're not, then it probably isn't either.

And what role do you play in Elden Ring?
Psychopath? Schizophrenic? a tortured Murderer who decided to kill everyone on sight and listen to selected individuals?

The only meaningful ways to interact with NPCs are to beat them up or give them shit. It's not an RPG.

And what role do you play in Elden Ring?
Psychopath? Schizophrenic? a tortured Murderer who decided to kill everyone on sight and listen to selected individuals?
You play the role of a maidenless person. You should feel right at home.

In Doom, you play the role of Doomguy McShotgun, in Halo, you play the role of Master Chief, in Choplifter, you play the role of search and rescue attack helicopter. This was a dumb argument 20 years ago, it hasn't aged well either.

In 2022, we only got 1 RPG in the top 5.
The genre is dead, it's over.
Although the 5th game has a good title for a solid RPG.

Typical newbie mistake, you are talking about TTRPGs, which are about role-playing, cRPGs are about killing monsters. No need to thank me for educating you

Posting here just to say that you have more ways to influence the story through your actions and choices in Elden Ring than in Planescape: Torment.
